Helix FW 1.04.1 (and Helix App 1.02) Now Available
efunkelist replied to Digital_Igloo's topic in Helix
This helped me: - quitting logic from the background - instead of rebooting helix - as instructed - I kept pushing the update in updater software without any reboot. -
Helix FW 1.04.1 (and Helix App 1.02) Now Available
efunkelist replied to Digital_Igloo's topic in Helix
Updateing Helix software to 1.02 --- CHECK! Exporting my presets to hardware --- CHECK! Updateing Helix firmware ....... not so much. It crashes and crashes and asks to reboot and go again. Once it even got a tiny-winy bit further in the process but still, crash and please try again. Using OSX 10.9.4 and yes the effin USB cable is directly between the helix and mac, not using a hub or anything... Doing everything just like I'm asked to do but not working at all. It was exactly the same when I was updateing the helix from stock to 1.03 - it took me like 15 times to plug in and out and reboot and retry and... really, this shouldn't take all day!!! Once I get this working I might just wait for version 2.xx before doing BETA WORK LIKE THIS :C -
Thank you very much for good replies! This community rocks! I've got several splitters/transformers/isolators and I've tried them through, no help there either. I thought I was aware about the ground loops and I try to keep this jungle as simple as possible to avoid loops and hassle. I think I'll have to try the gadget that Punkyboy linked if I can't find a way around with existing gear and cables :L Atleast it would seem like a fix because the only connection making actual noise here is the usb-connection...

I love using the helix with my real tube amp. I can use the real amp-sounds and just effects and/or the preamp modulation from helix and a real power amp kicking a real cab. Now, I would reaaaally love to have the helix connected to my DAW at the same time so I could also record and reamp the signals but plugging the USB between my helix and my mac causes all the speakers go justinbieberbangingcyborgbritneyspearsbrmmmmmmmm : C I haven't had this kind of problem with any other gear in my home studio. Any ideas? I could just use the analogue connections back and forth between my mixer but would love to skip all the A/D/A-conversions...

I'd be happy if the editor didn't crash and freeze helix. I'd be just happy if the new FW only brings more reliability and fine-tunes the existing features in helix. There's still too many bugs making the use of helix unconvenient AND THE LACK OF AN EDITOR SOFTWARE HURTS MY BACK now that the unit is on the floor where it belongs. Wouldn't bother if I got a separate controller and a rack-helix... It's just like bodybuilding - first build the constitution before tweaking extras. I think the helix has already PLENTY of amps and effects. Atleast I can wait for more sounds, I still haven't got through the ones I already have! :D

Yup, thanks, that gain block between the dly and rev fixed the spill. I've tried to vary the delay-time but it makes the same pop (or 'bump', rather a 'cut') in the sound no matter what's the length of the delay. It only seems to affect the "tempo" of that crack :L We could also request for line6 to mimic the ehx freeze via ideascale (going to do that later today!) I believe they could re-create by a unique code the same sound rather than strictly imitating the EHX pedal. Right now this effect is consuming quite a bit of DSP and blocks on the path from other sounds :c

Doesn't it feel like forever to roll the potentiometer sometimes? When you edit a parameter you can always push the potentiometer to shortcut to the default value. I suggest the push-pot could rotate for three shortcuts: minimum - default - maximum Idea No. 2942 : http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Helix-parameter-knob-button-for-more-than-default-value/793624-23508?submitted=1

Now that we have the "output gate" (block C) there's no need to command the delay's trails on/off However, if you have a reverb after the delay you might want to command that on/off if you step on the "freeze" quickly back and forth. There will be the previously caused reverb still reverberating otherwise. Still experimenting. I'm just too excited not to tell you about the progress on the way :D I used to have the EHX freeze once but now I wonder why the hell did I sell it away, this is too much fun to play around with. Fortunately helix brought that back too :3 p.s. the particle verb is quite a beauty to use after block B even though it doesn't sound like the original freeze. This is something else, but quite nice!

I now have a parallel path which is the "ehx freeze": Block A (bypassed) gain at -120dB Block B (active) simple delay at 100ms, 0% feedback, 50% mix, trails off --- (this needs more experiment, could be a combination of del+rev) Block C (active) gain at -120dB I have a merged momentary footswitch which commands the delay to go 100% feedback, trails on and to activate block A and deactivate block C ******************************** I hope this is makes sense and I didn't forget any details. Once I have this patch the way I'm really satisfied I will ofcourse share the whole patch with you (need to learn how to do that too ;) ) Now, the effect itself is the block B and blocks A/C are the gates opening/closing for the signal to flow the way we want. I think the part B needs more experiment for the delay time. At 100ms it still creates an annoying rhytmic loop. Next I will try to smooth it away with a reverb or another delay. Or bunch of both :D in different orders... Also, having a delay/&reverb in this parallel patch AFTER block C could help.

Thank you! Wonderful! I certainly voted for it and look forward for it to catch up. Kind of funny though, why didn't they make it work like this all the way from the beginning since it was added to the older modellers... :S

I'm not that sure and looking for a way to remind about it. Was it possible with pod HD?
-
I tried the smallest (shortest) delays possible. Gotta try a short reverb too if it helps to smooth the signal - without making the sound very "reverby" though. Gain block could work, gotta try that too. Too bad in attempt to get the effect it is getting very complicated, eating lots of DSP and blocks and all. But I guess this is a more constructive way of spending time than gettin' wasted via substances... :)

I think it is AMAZING to connect my variax to the helix via the designated input. I wish I could use the workbench hd to tweak the guitar while variax is plugged into helix. I have no idea how the ideascale works. I tried to register to it but didn't work out. I believe this is something all the variax+helix-users would like to have.

I tried that. The simple delay didn't sound smooth like EHX Freeze, it caused merely more like a BRRRRRMMMM or TTRRRRR -kind of sound :( Today I have time to play with helix. I'll see if I find any other ways to do this. About the bypass, I guess one could use external loop (a patch cable) for the bypassing via the second effect-lane in helix. The parallel path is not enough because you can't control the in/out Too bad, because atleast I've got other use for the external loops (my amp and analog pedals)

I'm preeetty sure one could create a "freeze" effect in Helix, but how? Atleast I hope so. I had that pedal once but sold it away and now I kinda miss it. Here's some reference: https://m.youtube.com/results?q=electro%20harmonix%20freeze&sm=3 Perhaps utilising a parallel path with a latch-delay? Any ideas? I can't get my hands on my helix for a couple of days and my mind is filling up with all kind of ideas of how to use that new beast ;)

^yes! Deffinately the app should have these kind of operations to make the tweaking easy. I belive Line6 should have other manufacturer's gear and software at hand - take example of the good stuff and drop the unuseful stuff. A wheel does not need to be reinvented, just make it better, eh?

Moving the joystick without rotating (split from "on the fly saving")
efunkelist replied to mdmayfield's topic in Helix
This is one more reason to must have a computer-based editing application. I've lost too many perfectly set amps while navigating through the signal-paths and accidentally rotating the knob :( -
Oh please! I had a PC/mac-editor on my Jonhson J-station BACK IN THE LAST MILLENIUM OVER 15 YEARS AGO!!!!!! I just got my helix yesterday and I can't describe my feelings on NOT having an application for editing the presets. Yes, the interface on Helix is better than any but still you should really be able to edit the presets, IF NOT ON YOUR IPAD OR MOBILE PHONE then atleast via the usb-connection to you DAW. We're living in 2015 not 1980 I really hope Line6 staff is working hard to publish the editing software soon. I guess it shouldn't be a big issue. What I really am afraid of - if they're working on something else now that the product is already published, WHAT IS IT D: Fortunately I do have a 30-day money-back-guarantee on this purchase. I look forward to not using it... sigh
