  1. Is this pedal you're referencing a DIY type of deal? If so, do you have a schematic? I know it's just a pot wired to a jack, but specs would be very helpful. I'd like to build one.
  2. I would absolutely treat it differently from an analog board into a traditional setup. Depending on the room you're in, the signal chain will appear to vary. When you are 100% in the digital realm things become more consistent. The same principle applies to a keyboard and varying patches within. In regards to deciding whether or not to bring loud patches down to balance or bring quiet patches up, my reasoning for asking this is a matter of signal to noise ratio... will the unit sound better with the patches generally lower or higher in respect to the overall master volume?
  3. Thank you for validating my logic on this. I am definitely not the guy who just sits at home and obsesses needlessly over meaningless details (which is the vibe I got from a previous response). I gig 3-4 nights a week and have done so for the better part of the last 15 years. My reason for posting this was to see the best way to get in the ballpark with this new piece of gear. I agree that having proper gain staging going into the gig is what separates the pros from the novice. I absolutely hate showing up to a gig and have to endlessly tweak settings last minute or watching a band mate do the same. I appreciate your response.
  4. In my specific instance, I'm swapping between a Shiva and orange amp. Big change in the presets for some unknown reason. This will ultimately be used live, so these types of changes make a big difference. Another thing I'm thinking about is whether I should drop the higher volume or raise the quieter one... I have room to move in either direction
  5. Thanks for all of your replies. I should have clarified a bit more... I certainly do not have any desire to have ALL of my patches be the same volume. What I am looking to avoid is having two different amp models, both gritty or distorted, have drastically different volumes for the purpose of rhythm playing. I think you guys would all agree if 2 different rhythm patches had a 12 db difference, it would not be a perceived volume thing. You definitely need to have similar tones that serve similar purposes be similar volumes. Just looking for the best way to get close before tweaking by ear. Not sure if USB has different output than xlr or 1/4" outs...
  6. For the first time, I connected my Helix to my DAW via USB. I noticed a big difference between a patch that was set up from scratch compared to a tweaked stock preset. I went ahead and boosted my personal patch after hearing this. My question is whether or not monitoring levels like this (with assistance of a meter in Logic) is a good approach to take or if I should base my judgement off of listening. I do understand that other factors come into play here when dealing with different amp models and EQ curves. I will also add that I looked into the levels on the various blocks and they seem comparable...
  7. I haven't jumped on it yet. Will probably get this weekend. I am unfortunately still carefully hand carrying the Helix.
  8. Gotcha. Makes good sense. Thanks for clarifying
  9. Peter, Little confused by the last statement. If you can't hear a difference between the 1/4">DI and XLR outs, why wouldn't you just use the XLRs all the time? Maybe I'm just misreading this... in a live setting, running the XLRs are definitely easier... at least if you're running to FOH...
  10. One thing to consider in this regard... when you are mixing an audio project in a DAW, it will sound different in headphones than it does they stereo monitors, as well as car speakers. Now, if the project is mixed properly, the sound will translate fairly well across all platforms. I have found it useful to tweak my presets on multiple sources and then double back to verify to sound. I found that once I got my sound worked out, I had to mess with the high and low cut a few times to attain that nice balance. Ultimately, each method of delivery will be different in some way or another, but the key is to find that happy medium between all of them and then your sound will be more consistent. Just my 2 cents anyways. What works for me may not work for you...
  11. This was not me, but it most definitely is someone trying to do the same thing. I upvoted it.
  12. I will check those out. I have heard that these are really good
  13. I'm pretty excited to try some of these out with my acoustic. Any in particular that you would personally recommend? I do the typical singer songwriter type of solo gig with a low-end Martin w/a soundhole pickup
  14. I am wondering if I were to plug an external pedal into the expression port an assigned it to a gain block, would it work in looper mode? Gonna have to try this weekend at some point.
  15. I am blown away that this hasn't been addressed. This platform is all about simplicity and functionality. Let's hope this gets more attention.
  16. I would love to see the unused switches in looper mode be assignable to a FX block. This would allow me to stay on the looper mode and have access to a lead boost without having to tap dance. An alternative that would also be useful would be to be able to assign necessary looper controls to stomp switches. In my solo gigs, I never have had need for the 1/2 speed or reverse controls. Would be nice to free up that space for other things like a boost or whatever...
  17. Alright. Thanks for confirming. I'll put this up on ideascale
  18. Is it possible to insert an FX control to one of the empty switches in looper mode? I know you can jump between modes while a loop is playing, but it would be handy to have access to a boost for solo work available on the same page as the looper controls... I haven't tried this yet, but is is possible to create a preset that has the looper controls mapped to a stomp switch without having to physically switch into the looper mode?
  19. I know the setting you're referring to, and yes, my issue is totally a first world problem.
  20. So this post ties in with my other regarding 2 guitarists running into 1 Helix... http://line6.com/support/topic/25444-1-helix-2-guitarists/ As of right now, I am using the Helix in stomp mode to make changes within my FX chain to get the sounds I need for one of my bands. I would ideally like to start using the snapshot feature, but am hesitant how it will work in this particular instance. Let me explain... The other guitar player in one of my bands is controlling the FX blocks in her chain with an external MIDI controller. With me only using stomp mode, this works out great as I only control my chain and she, hers. If i were to use snapshots, it would inevitably alter whatever settings she currently has toggled without her MIDI controller updating on her end (e.g. distortion block would be toggled off, but still be lit up on her board). So let me cut to the chase... Is there any way possible to tell the Helix to ignore certain blocks and not others when changing between snapshots? I hope this concept makes sense in the way i am describing it. I would guess that the Helix can't do this at the moment, but then again, I have only 2 days experience with this unit and have discovered a ton of cool stuff (with everyone's generous help, of course!) that makes workflow so much faster. Loving the tones I'm getting so far. The big test comes tomorrow with the band. I am totally jumping in with both feet. Wish me luck!
  21. I will most likely pick one up based solely on price. I will update when that happens.

    Rotary FX?

What do you recommend that the rotary cabinet gets placed after the amplifier? Sounds like a dumb question as I ask…

    Rotary FX?

Thank you for the clarification. This probably would've been a better thing to put in the cabinet section as opposed to the modulation group. It definitely would have made it more obvious. My mentality was to put it in line somewhere in the chain as I do with the Strymon.
