Comp Help

I 'm a  Noob with a Pod HD desktop.

Does anyone have a go to setting for a comp to flatten out the sound a bit.

I'm playing clean with a Blackface Norm pre amp and would like to iron out the peaks

I'm playing as dainty as possible but one or two of the notes are a bit heavy handed..

I find this to be somewhat of a problem with clean tones and the selection of compressors, especially if you're not used to playing clean tones.

You could try and isolate the offending, spiking, frequency (assuming there's a consistent frequency that's spiking) by trying a parametric EQ after the amp. Set a low gain, high Q, and mess with frequency knob until the spikes aren't as bad or maybe even go away. This might result in too much of a tone change though, I don't know.

Try the tube compressor after the amp.

Try the single input approach, by setting input 1 to your guitar, and input 2 to something you're not using, like variax, aux, or mic. This will lower the input signal the pod has to work with by about 6dB.

Mess with the resonance, thump, and decay cab DEP controls. If you set resonance to zero, thump and decay are effectively neutered. I've noticed thump can sometimes cause spikey signals on clean tones if too high.

Lower the guitar's pickups, or try the pad switch on the pod? Not sure the HD desktop has one of these.

Maybe one or a combination of these ideas will help.

Some great points duncann....

Number 1 in my book is getting pickups adjusted and balanced on the guitar...That's a setup thing for the guitar and benefits on any amp/modeler you would use....However, I find this to be as subjective as setting intonation on a guitar...Everyone touches different...yet people still pay for a setup that is nothing more than an educated guess in regards to the players technique...I will stop my rant there...

In terms of compressing, I would suggest putting a comp first in your chain....tame the transients before they hit the amp...I like the Vintage Pre for this as I prefer subtle and that one has a nice color....
