POD HD500X into the front of a Combo

Hi guys,

Sorry to bother you with this topic. I've got fairly modest equipment ( Yamaha Pacifica and Peavey Studio Pro 112) which I would like to use with my POD HD500X. I would like to avoid using the cab/head sim thing seeing that I'm going to be using my Peavey combo but I don't really know anything about how to chain pedals in order to get the most out of my gear. Apart from the pedals, the only thing left is the mixer so I would like to know whether I should place the pedals before or after the mixer. Help please !! I've struggling for months to get a decent sound out of POD HD500X and I'm on the verge of selling it :(

I have a trusty ole Studio Pro 40 and I have always used the ''FX in'' to bypass the amp's preamp as its not really needed (located in the back) so I hope you have one there as well. It sounds good with the HD Studio Direct w/ the cab sims.

Just because you are using a combo does not mean you have to turn the amp sims off. IMO most combos sound better with them.

I always put the mixer at the end of chain BTW.

Ah thank you so much BillBee. That's exactly what I wanted to hear :) (put the mixer at the end of chain) :) I really want to use the combo's pre-amp so do you recommend using the 4 Cable method in this case?

I wouldn't bother with the amp's pre (4cm). I love peavey amps but their pre's are not good enough (IMO) to replace what you gain from using the HD's models.

I would set up your main setlist  the HD (Studio Direct) into the FX in and dial in some goodness. Then if only for S&Gs go to a different setlist and screw around building patches for the 4cm.

Its all good in the end as the HD is flexible and you need to get some tones built and start jamming. :)

I think the Peavey combo has an FX loop so you should be able to try using that. You should be able to just go into the front of the amp too. The 4CM can be messy and tweaky. You can always try it to see if you like it.

You said you don't want to use the amp/cabs sims so sure you can turn them off and just use FX.
