No sound with VDI but tuner works on pod hd500

Recommended Posts

I had just used my rig on Wednesday and everything was fine. last night I set up and no sound with VDI cable hooked up but, the tuner on the pod hd500 still worked. Guitar/pod works with 1/4" jack.

Can the VDI cable be bad, but still work with the tuner on the pod? I didn't change anything on the pod as far as input/output.

I just don't want to spend the money on a new VDI if my cable is ok. Thanks for any help you can give.

BTW: I use a JTV-59 and a JTV 69s and tried both guitars. Same result. I know the variax sounds a little better with 1/4" vs VDI, but I like powering the Variax with my pod hd500 live.

Silverhead, Thanks for the reply. I'm fairly sure the settings are right on the hd500. I didn't change them from when they worked two days earlier. I did just check them and they are the same as before. The tuner works with the VDI and the 1/4" jack in guitar in and aux. I get sound with the 1/4" cable in aux and guitar in but not with the VDI in the pod hd500,plugged into an amp.

My question is wether or not the VDI cable is good or bad. Does the fact that the tuner works with the VDI mean the VDI is good?

OK, Solved at least part of the problem. My VDI is good. Tuner works. Model light comes on, so I figured finally that the cable is good. Checked and double checked the inputs and outputs and changed them(even though I strongly felt the were right) Nothing. WTF! Accidently hit one of the pods foot switches and suddenly had sound. What? I play with the pod in pedal board mode, and use an external effects pedal( a Fultone GT-500) so I have the effects loop as a foot switch.

Discovered that if no cables are connected to the send and return if that switch is on everything cuts off. Seems wierd to me.

Anyway, solved my problem from yesterday of no sound. Still don't know why I had a loud, very loud buzz on Friday night at set up for the gig. I can only guess it was the outlet I was plugged into at the club. But the bass player was plugged into the same one and had no buzz. I have no buzz here at home. Will play at gig level later to see if it returns. I might have to experiment with different grounding options.

Anyway, a lot of you probably already knew about the effects loop thing and it would have helped if I would have thought to mention it was in the effects chain, but didn't know it made a difference. So, I get an ah ha moment.

Glad to hear you found the reason for your VDI-Problem.

In case of the buzz there are me and others who have had some kind of very loud horn-tone which only could be stopped by changing the preset or switching the POD off. That did happen only once to me but was very frightening. Buzz sounds a bit deviating to me as a description.
