Ziyan
This may be a dumb question... Would I be able to use the Helix as a Midi to USB interface in order to edit presets on an external pedal (in this case a Strymon Big Sky using their Librarian or Nixie software) without having to buy a separate MIDI-USB interface like Roland, Yamaha or ART? Ziyan
External pedal via a computer obviously!
phil_m
I think this came up before here, and I'm pretty sure the answer is no... This isn't really the purpose of the MIDI over USB functionality. I don't think the Helix has the capability of sending the MIDI sysex messages the Strymon products are looking for.
Ziyan
Ah cool, thanks lots for the response!

Yes you can - The HELIX is a full featured MIDI/Audio interface. When you set up your Audio/MIDI drivers note that the HELIX has 8 input and output ports. I use input 1 and 2 for the HELIX MIDI/Audio info and inputs 3 and 4 for the "BIG SKY" MIDI interface. Best to keep the CC# commands separated! I like the Big Sky for the reverb and the Librarian and Editor make the interface a breeze. Good luck, Bo Re: Phil-M You are correct that there is not much that the HELIX can do as an "off-board" Controller other than sending MIDI Play, Stop, Pause, Rewind and Record to a sequencer/DAW and a few CC# numbers. BUT . . . .The OP has the software to do all the Editing (Nixie) and Big Sky patch Save/Recall (Librarion). He just wanted to know if the HELIX will act/replace the required MIDI hardware interface - which it will. Bo
PeterHamm
Yes, I have been using Helix as my only Audio AND MIDI interface for a while now. It works GREAT as a MIDI interface, although early firmware builds were touchy (at least on the Rack... and before it was available to the public). But the MIDI interface functionality seems to work perfectly on every build I've used for about the past 6 months to a year. There is no reason that Sysex data required for stuff like the Big Sky wouldn't work great.

PeterHamm
Cool... Glad I was wrong about that. i was pleasantly surprised when it worked so well, since previous units like HD 500 and XT/X3 left this off. So there was another extra piece of gear I didn't need anymore that I just... sold...

datacommando
I have been using Helix as my only Audio AND MIDI interface for a while now. It works GREAT as a MIDI interface... Ditto - although I did have some really weird issues early on with constant active sensing messages between Helix and my ancient Roland controller keyboard. Bought an Arturia Keylab 61 as a controller and Helix performed faultlessly between keyboard and Logic ever since!
