utubebenscott
So the other day i asked the question how would i go about using the effects of the HD, but my own pre amp/head and cab (four cable method), Now the question... What if i decide i want to create some tones/patches, where i'm still using the effects of the HD, but this time i want a pre amp from the HD but still my own cab? Thanks! silverhead
You would select the PRE (rather than the FULL) model of the amp. The PRE model does not include cab/mic simulations.
radatats
Simple. Same 4 cable setup but your patch will have no FX Loop Block. Now the signal will go: Guitar >--< POD Guitar In --- POD 1/4 Out (L mono) >--< Amp FX Return This patch will bypass the preamp in your amp and go straight to the power amp section and the cab. No cable changes. Change back to a different preset with the FX loop inserted and you will be using the preamp in your amp. ;)
utubebenscott
Thanks, what mode should this be in the settings on the new preset (with the pre amp and without the fx loop) studio/direct, stack power amp etc? Will I have to adjust anything else like the levels on the pod etc ? (Not the volume of the pre amp)
utubebenscott
Surely someone on here uses this method? I'm just looking to know whether you keep it in the same mode as when you use the pod just for effects (stack pwr amp) or do i have to change to studio/direct? Cheers
silverhead
Usually the only time you use Studio/Direct is when you are going direct to a PA/mixer. If your output goes to a guitar amp you want to use the Live mode that is closest to your amp (stack pwr, combo front, ...)

MartinDorr
Also, while you stated that you do not want it, you can turn cab (ER and mic) sim on for preamps. I know it's a little counter intuitive, but it might be worth trying as a replacement for a dedicated EQ or a little delay source if you run out effects. radatats
Agree with silverhead. Try them and see what sounds best to you. However, once you set it I believe it is global and can't be changed with each patch. So if you are running the 4 cable set up and in the same set want to switch between patches that use the amp's preamp and ones that use the POD's preamp it stays the same. Find the one that works best with your amp and EQ your POD preamps accordingly. As far as other adjustments, you will have to take some time to volume match your patches so the POD pre's are close to the amp pre's. Set your amp volume where you want it and set the POD Master. Now adjust the POD channel volumes for each preset to match the amp volume and save them. Next time you set up you can set your amp volume where you want it and use the POD Master to match and all the pre's should be good to go. Have fun... (Sorry, noob when it comes to head/cab setups) Do you mean i can EQ my own cab and make it sound like i have a mic on it? Agree with silverhead. Try them and see what sounds best to you. Ie. Either my own pre amp or a HD preamp?
radatats
I am saying the output setting (studio direct, combo, stack etc...) is not patch specific. Once you set it, it stays the same for all patches. ie. You can't have studio direct for your amp patches and combo for your HD patches in the same set list. MartinDorr
In regard to Cab sims, you can view them as a combo of multi-band, hardwired parametric EQs and compressors. The same applies to mic sims. ER is a simple form of delay emulating the first reflection of sound in a room. My point was that you may want to try them and see what you like and possibly create room for other effects in your chain if they can replace them. It does not really matter what those sims where designed to do as long as you like what they do to your sound. Don't get limited by the fact that you have a real amp and a cab and that their presence excludes HD500 features that seem to do the same or something similar.
