HX Effects in Front of Yamaha THR10

Here's an update for anyone interested...I have had mixed results using the HX Effects into the THR10...

1) Into the THR's instrument in, the only really usable option is the clean amp. Using any of the other THR amps with effects in front leads to less-than-satisfying tones.

2) The fact that there's no effects loop also limits the usefulness of a looper (not just the HX Effects looper, but any looper). However, the advantage of the looper in the HX Effects over using a stand-alone looper in front of the THR and then using the THR built-in effects is that you can have the looper after all of the HX Effect options, thus keeping your looper as recorded.

3) When using the THR instrument in you loose the stereo capabilities of the HX Effects. This is a real bummer because those stereo effects are huge fun to experiment with.

4) All of the above leads to using the Aux input instead. You then get stereo output, and essentially are using the THR as nothing more than monitor speakers (or via the THR headphone output). It sounds really good.

5) But, and this is a big but, you are then not using any amps so have to resort to using IRs (which I am just beginning to learn to use). For acoustic this is fine, but for electric it is a limitation (I think, I don't know what I don't know).

As a result, I am wondering if the HX Effects is the right piece of equipment for me. I love the form factor, and it is easy to use. It is built incredibly well, really top notch. But I may return it for the Helix LT to give more flexibility in using amps and cabs as opposed to just IRs.

My reply posts to the parallel topic TGP thread:

(Note: my TGP display is set to the Dark Theme)

This is why I love using my Helix Floor with the THR10C's AuxIn in Stereo!

Some food for thought....

Take a look at Signal Path Block Diagram on Page 8 of the THR10 User Guide PDF. Notice that Guitar DI signal 1/2 and Guitar Signal Stereo (Post Amp FX) are available via the USB output.

I do not know what the HX FX's USB supports.

You could explore routing the THR10's Guitar USB Out to your computer. Then feed those to the HX FX's USB. This may provide the Yamaha's Selected Amp and Tone Stack to the HX FX.

Yup...just saw that over in that other discussion forum.  The HX, to my knowledge, does not act as an interface so I highly doubt that would work.  It is actually another reason I am considering just upping the spend and going with the LT.
