HD500X Edit Freezing Since Over A Month Ago

Hi,

I've had this problem for quite a while now - not sure if it's an issue with the latest Windows update somehow messing it up, but the HD500X program will load, and receive patches from my unit, but then soon after if I try to change anything with the patches, it becomes unusable and eventually just freezes. At most I can edit a couple pedals and then it's just unresponsive. I used to have an HD500 and got an HD500X about a year ago and honestly it's been such a headache, and after literally losing all of my patches just a few months back because of a freeze, now I'm just at a loss for this product, even if it's just the editing software.

Anyway, has anyone else had this issue? Possible solutions? I've updated firmware, updated all Line 6 applications, re-installed all Line 6 applications, updated Windows, changed USB ports...I'm not sure what to do next.

I think you need to figure out if it is a computer issue, an HD500x issue, or a USB (communication) issue.

  • Take the time to program the unit directly. Do not connect USB, just play and program the unit itself. Don't do this for 5 minutes.... do it for a few days.
    • If the unit is freezing... you have found your problem. Time for service
    • If the unit works as it should, move on.
  • Open HD Edit in OFFLINE mode and make some patches.
    • If Edit is freezing, you have a computer issue. Not necessarily HD Edit, it could be your computer or a computer component on it's way out.
    • If Edit works as it should, move on
  • If you go this far, I'm thinking it's a communication error. It could be the computer, it could be the USB Cable, it could be the HD500x.
    • Try a different cable
    • Try different ports... not just one, but many different ports
    • If you have a lot of USB devices connected... remove the unnecessary ones to make sure they are not interfering
    • Do you have a 2nd computer you can try? Desktop, laptop, doesn't matter.
    • Do you know anyone with an HD500 or 500x? If so, get them to bring it over and try it?
    • Do you have another Line 6 device you can hook up to the computer? If so, try communicating with that.

Good luck... this stuff can be a real pain.

I do think there is something up with Windows 10, USB 3.0 and these HD PODs on some machines. I use a Sony VIAO i7 that is about 3-4 years old. It is super stable. However, about a year ago I started getting blue screens with my HD Desktop connected after about an hour. My machine has only 2 USB ports. bottom one is 2.0 only...top one is 2.0 and 3.0...I only get the blue screen if I use the bottom port. Completely stable on the top port. I figured this out when I got a 3.0 drive from a studio I record at sometimes and switched my normal routine to do some work on that drive...The drive will work fine on the 2.0 port, but it's a bit slower on transfers.

These problems can be difficult to isolate and I agree with codamedias suggestions of Editing on the unit alone, Edit alone, trying a new cable. You really have to take a structured approach to troubleshooting this sort of problem as it can be a lot of things that cause it.

A couple of suggestions I have for you in the meantime is to find out if you machine has a BIOS update available. Additionally, also find out if you chipset drivers are up to date. This will usually come from the manufacturer of your computer. However, if you have an Intel, ASUS etc motherboard, you can hunt down the drivers from them. Sometimes, manufacturers are a little behind on making their updates for the OEM boards they buy. The BIOS and chipset are the low level control for USB and there are issues in the firmware there sometimes...There are so many motherboards it is hard to say, but 3.0 was not without some pain when it first rolled around.

Good luck.

Thank you so much for your replies. As soon as I can test these things I will - particularly the USB 3.0 issue. I know it shouldn't matter, but though I tried many different ports, I did *not* try any 2.0 ports! Anyway, if that doesn't do it, I have plenty of troubleshooting steps to go through. Thanks again!

USB 3 has been a buggy rollout in the industry... now years in the making and still not perfected. With a USB 3 device there are no issues (or very few issues), but there are countless USB 2 devices that fail to work reliably in a USB 3 port and the HD500(x) is a USB 2 device. I suspect it will work fine if you connect it to a USB 2 port... that is where I would start anyway.

good luck
