Two guitars connecting hd500x

Hi good people!

I’m considering buying a hd500x, but I have a few questions!

I switch between my acoustic Takamine 12-string and an electric on stage. I also use a TC electronic Voicetone pedal which depend on the guitar for making harmony vocals effects.

Today I use a two different amps, one for each guitar and I switch between them with an a/b-pedal as I use one cable for both guitars thru the Voicetone pedal. I just mute the signal on the voicetone and then switch guitars between songs.

I want some effects available for both guitars and therefore looking at different multi-effects boards. I found the hd500x interesting.

I want a board where I could use both guitars in conjunction with the Voicetone pedal. And connect the board directly to the mixer.

So, one cable from the guitar, in the Voicetone, and one cable from the Voicetone to the hd500x.

And then just switch guitars using the one cable between the guitar and Voicetone.

Do anyone know if this is possible?

Is the hd500x able to provide good tones for the acoustic?

I know it rocks with an electric ;-).

Looking forward to see if anyone who knows the product has any thoughts regarding this.

Last question first -

The device will work with an acoustic.

Will it work well. That is a question that only the individual user can answer. Because for me, acoustic guitars are plain. They don't get effects, with the exception of some eq and reverb.

Thanks for your reply. I just want some eq and reverb for the acoustic, so that’s fine.

Now it remains to find out if someone knows it is possible to switch between both guitars thru the voicetone. Maybe I could use the a/b pedal, but it would be great if I could go without it as well. Less stepdancing :-)

Because the unit has a few options that aren't available in your current configuration, maybe you might find a new way to hook up.

For example:

*Two input jacks, one for each guitar, with the TC in the effects loop.

You would then design patches to use which input you needed and could choose to include the effects loops or not, or even switch it on and off within each patch.

I only mention this because some acoustics use an XLR, which provides a far superior tone than the 1/4". But if you are using a guitar amp, you can't use the XLR. Now you could.

*Or use the acoustic with the 2nd 1/4" and use the mic though the xlr. Become a 3 input user. You would then run a "dual path", one path with the mic and one for the guitar. I am not sure how that would work with the TC, but I am sure you would figure it out. Maybe even add some L6 effects to the mic.

*Even your outputs can be managed (limited to left, right, or both). Depending on how you hook up and how you design patches, you could send the acoustic and electric to different output jacks. That would allow you give each one a different channel in the pa, or send one to other effects or an amp or... or... or....

The unit may not have as many routing options as the newer devices that cost 3x the price. But it does allow for flexibility that you currently do not have.

In the price range, you can't beat it. IMO, it is even better than many units that cost more.

Many of us use the tuner as a mute button. This lets you mute the signal while changing guitars. No more a/b needed.

You could also add a "mute" patch to your setlist. No more a/b needed.

This is what I would do.... YMMV.

  1. Create two paths... upper for electric, lower for acoustic
  2. Set the upper path input to "guitar" (plug you electric in here)
  3. Set the lower path input to "aux"  (plug your acoustic in here)
  4. Using the mixer.... PAN the UPPER path to the left (send the left out to your amp)
  5. Using the mixer... PAN the LOWER path to the right (send the right side to the PA or to an Acoustic amp)
IMPORTANT: If you use an XLR to send to the PA you MUST plug a dummy jack into the 1/4" RIGHT output.
  6. Put any number of effects into the two paths that you want... but save one effect block for the next step
  7. In the first block (before the paths slip) insert a LOOP and set the mix level to be 50%.
  8. Run a cable from the SEND to the VOICETONE  (NOTE: You will need a STEREO to MONO cable for this... the STEREO end plugs into the SEND of the HD)

This is what you end up with...

  1. Electric guitar path on the UPPER Path... outputting to the LEFT output
  2. Acoustic guitar path on the LOWER Path... outputting to the RIGHT output
  3. Both guitars use the SEND to feed the VOICETONE. It is the DRY guitar tone from either the acoustic or the electric.

Now you can use your imagination to finish the patches using that template. For primary electric patches.... throw all the effects in the upper path. For an acoustic patch, toss a few effects in the lower path. You can "auto mute" the guitar you don't use in a patch by simply setting it's input to VARIAX (eg: on the electric patch, set the lower path input to VARIAX and the acoustic will be muted when you select that patch).

Everything is now programmable... no A/B boxes, no swapping cables, etc... etc...
