Getting "Cable Tone" with non-L6 wireless -> how to EQ?

Hey guys!

A few weeks ago I treated myself to a cheapo "5G" wireless from Aliexpress to use at home for practice. Although I was expecting it to suck a big one, it turns out to sound really good, with good range (never had a dropout), dynamic range and playtime on one charge. Heck, I even played an impromptu rehearsal using it and it worked great (drummer auditions in a rented space)!

Of course, being a digital wireless, it adds a bit of brightness to my sound.

Any of you have experience with setting up an EQ that would make the tone a bit closer (in brightness) to a cable? Let's say I'd love to end up with something similar to the L6 "Cable Tone" curve.

I imagine I'd put one of the EQ blocks first in the chain and then what?

All ideas appreciated, I'd be happy to test them and let you know what the results are. Cheers!

Important distinction.... it doesn't actually add brightness, it just isn't removing it the way a cable does :)

EDITED: I have changed my suggestion based on the Cable Tone Chart that is mentioned later in this thread....

Try this....

  • Insert the "low and high cut" EQ in the first slot.
  • Leave the low at 0
  • Set the frequency of the "High Cut" to match the desired length based on the chart shown a couple posts down.
(EG: To simulate a 20' cable, set the high cut to approximately 6K)

There is also a High Cut included in the parametric EQ.... but IMO that would be overkill for this job.

There was a PDF I saw before that showed the response curves for the various Cable Tone settings. It’s basically a low pass filter. The longer the cable, the lower frequency setting.

based on that... I am going to edit my suggestion above.... it seems to operate differently than I was expecting...

Yes, that’s it... I just didn’t put much effort into looking for it.

Thanks @codamedia for this graph :) I actually use g70 for my gigging wireless. I'm gonna play around with this idea the next time I sit down to fool around with my helix :)

Oh, and I do realize that there's no brightness ADDED when you use the wireless ;) A bit of a simplification I made after taking the tone of a cable as a baseline.
