Preamps?

Yes, quite regularly.

If the power amp section of an amp is not a big part of the behavior/tone of that amp, I will often just use the pre-amp versions. I tend to get a beefier tone from the pre-amps alone. There are notable exceptions... VOX Amps and Tweed amps in particular require the full amp models and I also prefer the PLEXI that way.

My current live rig is based around a Deluxe Normal Channel pre-amp and a Celestion Ruby IR. I'm experimenting with replacing the Deluxe with the new Princeton pre-amp and it's sounds great (better) here in my studio, but there are no gigs to test it in right now. For reference... I go direct to FOH/Monitors and also an FRFR when needed.

so, you use just the 'preamp' only version direct to FOH?

Was that directed to me or @dacop13?

I run the Deluxe Normal Channel (or the new Princeton) preamp model into a Celestion Ruby IR, direct to FOH/Monitors/FRFR.

Others may feel very different. This is just my preference.

Agreed in the "beefier tones", same here.

Sure, this makes sense. As long as you add an IR or Cab with that Preamp, FOH will be fine.
