Should I use a MIxer ?

Hi everyone

I am considering connecting my Helix LT directly into a mixer before connecting into a line 6 lt2 speaker. This is for live gigs only

Is using a mixer going to benefit me or am I just complicating things and should adjust my EQ in the Helix alone ?

If a mixer will benefit me , recommendations are most welcome . I guess something compact would be best ?

Thanks in anticipation of your response

Cheers

Pete

Well, as always, it depends, but given the Helix incorporates the cab and mic colorations / models, my own practice is to run out of the helix to as flat and uncolored an amplification system as possible (I go direct into a mixer via XLR if possible), and then have a couple wee speakers on stands near my head fed from the 1/4 phono for monitoring, or use headphones if I'm in the pit (aka out of sight).

While there will always be those who disagree, that's my take - and your FOH engineer will thank you. As a soundman as well as a player, I can tell you that the stereotype of guitar players running too hot on stage is mostly true, me included, so get those speakers as close to your ears as possible, so you have to blow your eardrums before you accomplish that, lol.

Use a mixer if you have other sound sources to mix in, such as a synth and/or eDrums or vocalists. You can have separate Outputs from Helix feeding your Stagesource as stage monitor and an XLR feed to FOH. Again, if the lt2 is acting as a traditional stage monitor or the actual FOH speaker with multiple signals in it, a mixer might be called for. If it's just your guitar's stage monitor, a mixer is just a complication unless there needs to be one stage level for the band/audience and a separate personal monitor as in the setup described by @BinaryRhyme. Depends totally on the situation.

I can't imagine what value there would be in going through a mixer just for the Helix.  I always use a mixer at home when I'm dialing in my presets just to gain stage my presets, but other than that it's hard for me to dream up a purpose.  What problem are you trying to address?  That's where you start at for deciding on such things.
