Normal sound while the tuner is on?

When I turn on the tuner I only get clean DI sound - or the sound is totally muted, depending on how it’s set up.

Instead I’d like to have the normal tone that’s loaded up continue playing.

How do I change it so that even with the tuner on it’ll still let me keep playing with whatever patch that’s loaded up? Sometimes it’s useful to have the tuner visible on the screen while we play normally.

THANKS

Helix's tuner is designed to protect the world from players who think that the audience WANTS to hear them tuning up.

I don't get it. When would it be "useful to have the tuner visible on the screen while we play normally"?

How is it even possible to tune while playing normally?

The tuner operates on the direct, unprocessed input signal. That provides the most accurate tuning capability. A processed signal that includes distortion, delay, chorus, reverb, etc. cannot be used to tune very well. How would you tune a pitch shifted signal? That’s why the only two options are DI and Mute.

Technically I suppose it would be possible to continue routing the processed signal to the outputs while the tuner is active and still operating on  the DI. Hard to imagine that this would be useful because, well, as stated earlier who wants to hear you tune? And what are the circumstances where the tuner display is useful while playing normally?

If you want to pursue this you could post the suggestion on Ideascale. It would be interesting to see if anyone else wants this feature.

No, no one wants to hear anyone tune up.

I'm setting up the action on a new bass. I like a small amount of fret buzz in my tone. I wanted to hear its effect on my Helix'ed tone while I dial in the string height, without having to go over to the Helix 5 feet away on the shelf and turn the tuner on an off every few seconds while I'm sitting at the workbench.

It's also been handy MANY times on stage to have a tuner running on a pedalboard, for those moments when you start thinking "am I out of tune on this string?". Even more with an old analog synth on stage. Sometimes stage sound isn't great and the objective measurement can help you know where you're at. Similarly, it's also useful when you're recording. Just leave the tuner running so that you can tune whenever you need to, without having to lollipop around with a tuner between takes while you're focusing on the performative job at hand. Consider it a pitch meter and you'll start to get it.

Perhaps an external tuner would be handy for you?

As for using a tuner while recording, I prefer to tune up between takes rather than during a take. You find it acceptable to begin recording while out of tune? If your instrument can’t hold its tune for the duration of the take you need to examine your instrument.
