HX Effects with Tonex - Weird Routing possible?

Hey all! First time posting, not sure if this is the right place. I have only every used an all-in-one board solution but now I am branching out to a dual ToneX with HX Effects.

I would like the HX Effects to handle some stuff at the beginning of the chain (comp/octave/etc), but also wet effects after the ToneX. I came up with a block diagram that MAY work, but once again this is my first time messing with send/return/4cm/etc.

See below block diagram. I may remove the timeline/bigsky if the HX Effects wet effects are good enough. Can I SEND a mono and then RETURN a stereo? Then OUTPUT a stereo?

Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Thanks in advance!

Your diagram will work but has potential for LOTS of latency!

Great point! What is the latency of the HX Effects? Maybe 3ms? just guessing. The ToneX one is ~1.5ms.

So maybe 3ms for HX -> 1.5ms for Tonex -> 3ms for HX again? So I'd have to see if 8ms is too much for me to handle... plus any additional latency of going to FOH maybe?

Don't forget the Strymons, though being reverb/delay it likely won't be noticeable, and IIRC they're True Bypass.

FOH will be analog, so no latency there.

Latency doesn't really bother me until >15ms, but some folks are hypersensitive to it, especially "shredder" types.

I've also read (on TGP, so consider the source) that using dual ToneX pedals can introduce Phase issues?

Okay good point about the strymons. Honestly I'd be happy to drop both strymons if the HX Effects can give me what I am looking for. I am just including the strymons because every P&W/CCM guitarist has them.... and my main style would be P&W stuff, like big reverb stuff and love me a good shimmer etc.

Interesting about the 15ms... I have only ever used an all-in-one rig like Kemper, so I never considered all this stacking latency stuff. I may try it out and it bothers me, or maybe I won't even notice. Never know until I try, right!

But I guess my biggest takeaway with this is that the setup I showed in the diagram CAN work, but I just have to see if the latency will work for me.

Oh and yes, using dual ToneX can introduce phasing issues. One profile may have a latency of 1.2ms and the other may have a latency of 1.6ms. Even as small as 0.1ms can cause some phasing. I likely won't be running dual ToneX until IK adds a feature to set the latency at a set amount, like set both to 1.7ms or something like that. In the meantime, I will set up the board and get everything working then introduce the 2nd tonex when they fix that.

Now that you've clarified your actual needs/situation, I can report that I use my ToneX Pedal in the FX Loop of my Helix and send that on to either my Catalyst100 or FRFR112. Latency is negligible, and it sounds great. I'm not a P&W kind of guy (hard rock/blues), but when I feel like getting "ambient" the Helix has more than enough mods/delays/reverbs to get me there and back!
