sbland
Hi Ive Suddenly started having problems booting up the box. It starts ‘booting’ then makes a clicking noise and starts the process again. Eventually it starts but there is obviously something is starting to fail. Anyone know what this clicking sound is and is it repairable? ricstudioc
Are we talking about a click coming from the audio outs, or some sort of mechanical sound?
Schmalle
The click in absolutely normal and comes from the 'analog bypass' aka 'true bypass' relays which mechanically switch the HX into the signal path. So your HX boots several times until it stays on - do you use the original power supply? If not how do you power it?
sbland
No it’s not the original power supply Power Supply Replacement for LINE 6 HX EFFECTS MULTI EFFECTS PEDAL 9V 3A ADAPTER UK
Schmalle
I'd try a different power supply if possible. You can also open a support ticket to check what they suggest.

Schmalle
Unfortunately I don't have a recommendation, I'm not from the UK and I use the original power supply. The problem is that you can't see from the outside how much a power supply manufacturer cheaps out on the electrolyte capacitors. Cheap ones tend to wear out faster. Your new power supply works fine but after a year or so strange things start to occur. In your case worn out capacitors *MIGHT* be the reason your HX reboots, because a short and fast current is needed to switch on the relays after the boot phase. A defective power supply is hardly able to provide that current and has no (charge) reserves left to power the HX for a short moment so it shuts off.

theElevators
I am not sure what the issue is exactly. But I had an old TV that started making this clicking sound when turning on. With time it took several minutes for it to turn on while making clicking sounds, and eventually it stopped powering on at all. So it could be the capacitor (or something) that is ready to go. I got the whole motherboard of the TV replaced by Samsung service people, and 8 years later the TV works great.

I've repaired several LCD screens with similar issues (doing weird stuff while powering on) over the years by replacing some electrolyte capacitors in their power supplies. It's the most common failure.
sbland
I’m pretty sure I bought a cheap replacement power supply from Amazon for £15 after the original one had problems and as you rightly say after a year it starts failing. A genuine replacement costs £55!

A genuine replacement costs £55! You have a two year warranty so you can ask Amazon for a replacement unit.
