CPU spikes with Podfarm
by vries on 2009-02-11 02:09:59
stranger things are happening: my processors show a regular 15 sec interval spike (see image) when Podfarmstandalone is open. One core is more affected then the other.
Lowering the buffersize of the Toneport increases the height of the spikes.
DPC checker shows latency spikes at the same timeinterval.
Closing the podfarm application makes the spikes go away.
Removing all gear from podfarm has no effect.
All unused hardware is disabled: internal soundcard and networkcard, wireless networkcard.
Any suggestions are very welcome.

Could the software also be the culprit? I use Cubase SX 3 and I don’t get any spikes when I use the GX as dongle for POD Farm. Heck, I can load 15 tracks with POD Farm and my CPU meter hardly moves but I get spikes when I use the iLok for POD Farm and that’s with three track loaded with POD Farm.
Is there any other services or software or updates running in the background?

It is surely Podfarm cause spikes aren't there when podfarm is closed.
It must be driver related if increasing the audiobuffersize lowers the CPUspikes, isn't it?
Do you get regular interval spikes?
There are no other software appl. besides podfarm running when spikes appear.

I have to check it out and see how my spikes are time wise.

I now have the spike problem after doing those test for ya. LOL I get them every 20 to 25 seconds. I'm going to unistall POD Farm 1.03 and re-install 1.02 and see what happens then. I didn't have this problem before.

ah, tough luck! sorry to hear that. Do your spikes decrease in height with higher audiobuffersettings?
just read that this spiking is sometimes related to cdrom-drives being accessed.

My DAW has been working great since last August when I put it together. I started noticing the spikes last night while working for more than 4 hours on a song. I updated POD Farm from 1.02 to 1.03 this past weekend.

Hi,
Other people have reported similar issues involving other DAWs.
I'd like to investigate further so can you provide me with some information?
First, if you have not already, can you please fill out your support profile for me at the following link?
http://www.line6.com/account/supportProfile/
Also, is there a specific recipe that you follow that allows you to reproduce this indefinitely each time or is it sort of intermittent. If it happens every time can you provide me with that recipe? Thanks.

I some how fixed my spiking problem........ don't ask. LOL I should have written down everything I did but you know how it goes when you're trying to fix something......ya want it fixed now. I totally forgot and tried to remember what I did but I was messing with my settings for an hour or so. I ran Cubase SX 3.1 for three hours today with no problem.

Hi, I filled out the support profile.
the recipe to reproduce indefinitely on my system is simple:
open Live7 with UX1 as device: spikes appear
open Live7 with no device : no spikes
open Podfarm, no spikes yet, open Live7 ,spikes appear.
Lowering the Tonedirectmonitoring buffer from one tick from extra small to extra small increases the spikeheight.
Closing Podfarm while Live7 is still running: spike stay.
Closing Live7 while Podfarm is still running: spikes disappear.
In Live7 I use 256 buffersize, inputlatency is 8.5ms outputlatency is 17ms
Hope this helps,
Rene

Do you have any other plugin effect or instuments running when you have POD Farm running?

normally I run multiple podfarmplugins and a bfd plugin, but the spiking also occurs without any plugin running in Ableton.
Spiking is definitely related to the Toneport since they dissappear when I choose "no device" in Ableton's audiosettings.

I don't know. My spikes were happening when I had Kore Player (free), EZDrummer and two instances of POD Farm running. I'm going to load all three again but I'll have my Echo Layla 24 as a soundcard. I'll let ya know what my results are in a few hours. I'm still at work. :(

Hi,
I can sort of reproduce this here on our Vista machine but it's not as consistent as what you are describing.
I launch Ableton Live 7 with the UX1 connected, set the UX1 as my I/O device, and then launch POD Farm.
I initially do see a pretty large spike (up to about 65% briefly) and the the CPU drops down to about 4%. However, if I just watch the activity monitor, every now and then there will be a spike sometimes up to about 50% despite the fact that I don't touch anything.
I'll let our QA department know and see what they say.

ok, thanks, important note I think is that my spikes increase (to 100%) when I lower the tonedirectmonitoringbuffer to the minimum.
When do you expect any further info?

BTW the same spikes appear with Podfarm and iTunes open. When Podfarm is closed, the spikes disappear.

Hi vries,
I was able to reproduce this a little but wasn't able to get my computer to spike out at a 100%.
I created a support ticket for you so we can get it up to our QA department and see what they have to say. Check out and respond to the ticket and we'll bump it up.
Q: What is a support ticket?
A: A support ticket allows you to directly correspond with a Line 6 Support Representative. An email will be sent to you from Line 6 containing a link if a Line 6 support representative determines that a ticket is necessary to troubleshoot your issue. Please follow the link in the email to view your open ticket to work one on one with Line 6 Support.

Im using PodFarm w iLok and some of the amp models causes my cpu to overload. Some of them work fine. Alot of the effects also work fine, but compared to other qualuty plugins the Podfarm seems to be very cpu hungry. I'm runnig Nuendo 3 on a PC with 2Gb ram and Intel dual processor.
