relationship between normal usb output level and other outputs
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in Helix
Thanks again. Monitoring where I play is on IEM so it's the same signal being sent from the Helix to the mixer. On our mixer the input trim shows mic / line. -22 to +20 or - 15 to + 65 -
relationship between normal usb output level and other outputs

Thanks for that. I'll know thursday night if XLR direct to mixer at mic level is going to require too much trim on the board. If so I can 1) revert to 1/4 out through direct box at the new setting of Instrument Level, 2) revert to 1/4 through DI at Line level ( don't want to do this because instrument level works best with my small mixer at home ), 3) make the master Helix volume apply to XLR ( don't want to do this because I like having the knob defeated against accidents) or 4) set a new target level for patches of -25 dbFS -
relationship between normal usb output level and other outputs

I read your other post but I'm still having trouble understanding the terminology ...what I do know is that with a USB hooked up to my Helix to the laptop I've been trying to get -20 dbfs on a loudness meter in my case it was the orban loudness meter and that has resulted in mixer preamp gain of about 11 o clock which is unity on our studiolive PreSonus mixer..... and this was running out of the 1/4 inch output into a direct box with the 1/4 inch set to line level .......now I want to switch to using the XLR out I'm assuming set to mic level. As far as what I meant by the word relationship, I mean let's say I increase the target level from -20 to -15 should I expect a similar change in the XLR and 1/4 in output levels? -
What is the relationship between 1/4, XLR and "normal" USB outputs when you set patch levels using a DAW? I've been shooting for about -20 dbFS in my DAW's loudness plugin, but due to new pickups, I've now turned the Helix input pad OFF, and planning to switch from 1/4 at Line level thru direct box to PA to XLR at mic level. Master volume is set to digital only so at unity/full for other outputs. If the USB is doing it's own, separate thing, then I'll still achieve consistent patch levels to the mixer and the mixer gain will have to be adjusted due to me sending via XLR/mic instead of 1/4 / Line.

Saving a patch in HX edit is different now

Saving a patch is different in HXEdit now. It pulls up a dialog offering patch name and setlist. Is there a setting so it just saves as before?

You just have to be careful that your sound technician is blending the two mixer channels with your guitar evenly... if only one goes out to the front of house PA speakers your audience will be hearing just one side of the stereo which would be pretty bad

Stumbled on an older thread. I can understand the desire to hear your Helix effects in stereo, but unless you're a solo act, I think what would benefit players more is a stereo monitor mix from the mixer that allows you pan and position the various instruments and vocals. So you could have drums mostly in left ear, bass a little closer to center, vocals in the right ear and your guitar right in the middle ( just an example ). In mono from the mixer all your band mates are basically right between your eyes ----- turn up the lead vocal a bit and it blocks the drums etc etc etc. I keep pushing for this where I play and would take it anyday over hearing Helix reverbs in stereo that the audience can't hear anyway ( stereo FOH is a rarity, unless somebody implements it out of ignorance --- what are audience members on the far sides of the venue going to hear?? It can be done with big bucks, but not common. ) The other big help is an ambient or room mic --- the goal here is to get a bit of what the audience hears into your in-ear mix --- not so much to hear the crowd but how the band as a whole actually sounds with all of the room acoustics etc in play.

3sigma electric impulses- anyone tried them?

LOL. I doubt the PA front of house speakers where I play are doing the Helix justice. That and volunteer sound techs keeping your buried in the mix. -

So far I only bought the PRS and LP IRs to use with my Strat. I might get the Strat IRs to see if it improves my James Tyler Variax JTV59 through the Helix when going for a "strattier" sound. But yes, there's just no substitute for hearing your gear and setting up your patches at gig volume. -

For a live mix, I couldn't tell enough difference between Andy's humbucker, sigma IR or split humbucker to worry about. I had the split functionality on a Carvin AE185 I used to own and never thought it matched what my 74 strat produced. There's more to the sound than just the pickups ( maple neck etc etc ) In my case, today, I'm actually going the other way, using the Sigma PRS and Les Paul IRs to fatten up the tone on my strat. As far as my JTV59 variax --- great guitar and so flexible with the Helix ---- but still doesn't nail the strat tone 100% -

New Features (Firmware 2.80) Not out yet. Variax String Level—Helix can now remotely adjust the level of each guitar string on a connected Variax independently. From the Input > Multi or Input > Variax block, press PAGE > three times and turn Knobs 1-6 to adjust each string’s level. Just like with any amp, cab, or effect, String Level can be quickly assigned to footswitches, expression pedals, or even Snapshots. "Wait. You mean I can assign the expression pedal to swell in the volume of strings 3, 4, 5, and 6? And I can turn down the top two strings for the verse (Snapshot 1) and bring them back in for the chorus (Snapshot 2)? And if the high E is too shrill I can back its volume down to 82%?" Yes.

As far as I know you use 48 khz for Helix https://www.celestionplus.com/ir-instructions/ -

Just now seeing this. So you can use this towards the front of your signal chain/patch and also have cab IRs after the amp? I'm interested in ( occasionally ) beefing up the tone from my partscaster with Lace Sensor Gold pickups. Not sure if I want more of a P90s "beef" or a humbucker's but guess I'd need both the PRS and Les Paul electric impulses from 3 Sigma. -
I tested the Helix and Android phone into a dual input direct box. It worked. Would a small powered mixer on stage work better ---- no doubt, but the arrangement in the photo needs to external power. From the developer of that USB driver for Android: "Unless someone send us a Helix, then I don't think so. We have too few customers with a Helix to go out and buy one. Looking at the forums, the Helix is also not perfect with iOS." In my limited experience with an Iphone and the Apple camera kit, it works.
-
Actually I already have this so just need a passive ( preferably ) direct box that takes a 1/4 ( helix ) and XLR input and combines them. Or I could start using the Helix XLR out since we never run phantom on my channel.
-
And yet, on IOS it works. There must be a device that could be substituted for a direct box that would pass the Helix output to FOH AND allow a phone to play music via a 1/8 ( 3.5 mm ) cable. This is really all I'm trying to accomplish during rehearsal occasionally.

Got excited about this for Android audio to Helix over usb, then read the list of unsupported devices. :-) That's not the only audio situation where Android let me down. I had even bought a refurbished Iphone and camera kit to use just for this purpose, but it wasn't from a reputable dealer and the touchscreen just went south. I know there is a solution using various send return jacks but after buying the needed cables, decided it was too much trouble.:-) Ba http://www.extreamsd.com/index.php/technology/usb-audio-driver?fbclid=IwAR2a8HCeYw6Yi91wWdyhRbEvZTx5NUxwcBdLtS5Fi6ekxFEX1JTH2mofBPg

I'll just have to test as we don't know exactly what the programming in the Helix is doing. This is beginning to remind me of another issue where as compression ( and drive? ) go up, the tonal differences between models/amps etc seem to go down (using JTV59 with Helix ). It's possible that with 100% string volume, and lately +3 db on each model's preset volume, followed by a leading compressor in each Helix patch, that I'm over compressing before the signal even reaches the amp.
-
I'm going to test this but wanted to see if others had a similar experience another JTV user on the Facebook group. "...turn down the string volumes ( red highlight in the photo ) in Workbench until you can hear that compression type effect turn off...but I just literally turned all my strings down to 50 percent and then increased each preset volume ( green in the photo ) on my guitar model 6dbs to be even with magnetic pickup volume and I noticed pick attack seems much more realistic and overall it feels more “real” I take this as NOT adding magnetic pickup to the guitar model, just an attempt to improve tone and have the models more in line with mag output.

I have a Relay G10s wireless on order but thought I'd try the looper as a way to double-check patch tones at the venue. I'm just sticking the "one switch" looper at the end of some patches so I can walk the room in the Venue listening to the sound looping. Placing it at the end of the patch AND setting the final output block to zero ( no gain or cut in volume ) regardless of snapshot allows you to loop on one snapshot and solo over it on another. Easiest way in the absence of HxEdit seems to be just select the looper with the joystick and bypass, unbypass it as needed.
