kpsion First, words of wisdom from leisure491: >Very few of the worlds most famous leads are extremely distorted. Second, I don't think you ever said what you were doing to get a high gain tone. What amp / pedal combos have you tried? What tends to work best for me is to put either a Tube Drive, Tube Screamer, Line 6 Drive or Line 6 Distortion pedal in front of the amp. I use some pedal Output and pedal Drive with some amp pre-gain and sometimes some amp Master gain to get the required level of distortion. I use the pedal tone controls to pre-eq the tone. I use the amp tone stack and DEPs to fine-tune the tone. I rarely need more EQ in the chain. I've never run into the kind of problems you report. I don't even use the high-gain amps much (Treadplate; 5150, Soldano overdrive etc). JCM-800 and often as not just the Plexi with a good cab / mic combo are just fine.

>But then again I'm not using super hot pickups which could make a difference I suppose. Nor am I. Using the patch linked above, 22K with amp Drive at 30% is clean and defined while Auto is harsh and beginning to clip.

A commenter on another thread was having volume and distortion problems with the JC-120 / Jazz Rivet which may have stemmed from gain staging. Just as an example: The Jazz Rivet does seem to be prone to input clipping, even with not-silly-hot humbuckers. Setting input impedance to 22K stopped the clipping, but with Drive at 30% and Channel Vol at 45% (to prevent any post-amp EQs in the chain from clipping) the patch was quiet. So I added gain with a Vetta Juice in front of the Mixer block and maxed the Mixer gain. This produced a very clean tone that was loud enough to be used alongside high gain patches in a setlist. I've posted the example on Custom Tone: http://line6.com/customtone/tone/1811263/

Sorry about the formatting stuff-up. Perhaps this will work better: /JR A - Vetta Juice -\ Noise gate - - Mixer \JR B - Vetta Juice -/
-
Indianrock I can get a clean, reasonably loud tone from this dual amp setup: /JR A - Vetta Juice -\ Noise gate - - Mixer \JR B - Vetta Juice -/ Where: Impedance = 22K Noise gate = default Amps = default *except* Master Volume at 50% and Channel Volume at 45% for both Vetta Juice = Amount 0% Level 100% Mixer = Path A and Path B: Level 12dB Pan Centre Possibly the way forward would be to do as you suggest and dial back the other patches until they level with the JR patch(es).

Indianrock2020 You've made me go back to the Roland model and the fact that I get a slight, unpleasant treble clipping sometimes. Try setting the input impedance to 22K. This fixed it for me.
-
If you've got the channel volume all the way up and you have effects post-amp (especially eq.), you will get horrible digital clipping. I tend to leave channel volume at ~45% and gain stage the rest of the signal chain (including the mixer) to compensate. http://foobazaar.com/podhd/toneGuide/setup#gainStaging

Thanks for your responses Hurghanico & PunkyBoy Just what I needed to know. I thought it was probably me ;-)

I'm having a bit of a problem with the wah effects. When I exit wah (toe click), the tone is left as if the wah is still on with the pedal toe-down - treble to the max and unusable. HD Edit is running and the POD is USB connected to a PC. Anyone had this happen to them? Any suggested fixes would be very welcome and apologies if this has been covered before. * * * I'm using: POD HD Desktop FBV Shortboard MkII (correctly calibrated) All Line 6 drivers are up to date. Monkey say. Windows 8.1

Red_Strat1 One thing I should add is that it is *much* easier to learn the Pod HD if you use headphones while you are exploring and experimenting. Also I forgot to link to the Manuals download page. Don't forget to have a look at the Model Gallery - very handy overview of what's in there.
-
Red_Strat1 I have never had so much fun with a piece of kit as with the PodHD. If you get up to speed with MeAmBobbo's tone guide as I suggested above so you have an idea what you are doing, you will have a total blast with this thing. Best tone toy ever ;-)
-
And any general tips for someone new to elec guitars and an HD? maybe get used to pre-sets first before too many new sounds / downloads? I found the POD HD Guide by MeAmBobbo absolutely invaluable. Without it, I would still be blundering around in the dark instead of getting the tones that I want. There is a great deal of information to work through, so treat it as a project rather than a quick fix, but it is IMO an essential for any new user.

rmwpsych said:
I agree as well. Seems like there are so many complaints on this forum but when you step back a bit a listen to the unimaginable options that we as guitarists have at our fingertips, it is really staggering. I have been playing guitar/recording music as an enthusiast for over 30 years and this is a great time to be making music. Its not good tone that is the challenge, it's still writing a great song! There is absolutly no reason a fantastic quitar sound can't be found with the HD modles. I have found all the models sound fantastic just depends on how to use that tone/sound in the "recipie".
Couldn't agree more. I started playing in the late '70s and the expense and difficulty of experimenting with and developing tone needs to have been experienced first hand to fully appreciate the wonders packed into the PodHD. This thing is an Aladdin's Cave. Yes, kids these days don't know how lucky they are :) Nor do their housemates, who no longer have to share living space with quite so much rig. Kit like this sharpens the challenge: you can sound pretty much like you want now, so the focus quickly returns to writing good material. But to adapt an old Babylonian proverb, the gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in tone-chasing.

TRZ Sorry, we crossed. I'll get a support ticket then. I didn't want to do that without first trying everything I could and then asking for help here in case it was just me being daft and missing something obvious. Eh, what a PITA.

Just tried to update my settings again. What is it they say about doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different outcome... :) Anyway, it didn't work again but as usual, when I try to log out I can't. I get this message: The link you followed to logout appears to be badly formed. Please go back and click the link again. I wonder if this is relevant to the problems I am having updating my user profile?
-
TRZ Thanks for your response. That was where I started. Indeed, my username field in personal info *shows* my altered username and I can even log in using my new username. But NOTHING I do will get rid of 'line6bbd' when I actually log in. Nothing. I am absolutely at my wit's end on this.
-
Forum admin, please help. When I registered my POD I chose a username that I would remember: "line6bbd". I had no idea that this was how Line6 employees signed themselves in the discussion forums. I have tried *everything* to change my username but nothing works. I have been unable to find a working email address for sysadmin so this is an appeal of last resort. Please can someone contact me (I have verified my email in my account settings) and help me resolve this?
-
Moderators I chose my user name for my own convenience not realising that if I commented here it looks as though I'm a L6 employee or pretending to be one. This is embarrassing. I have *tried* to change my screen name but despite logging out, deleting cookies, logging in again etc I *still* seem to be stuck with my original user name. This post is a test to see if when I actually comment, the new name is now applied. Please feel free to delete. Sorry for any confusion caused.

but the powers that be, chose another route. We got to fight the powers that be. With apologies to Chuck D It's all we can do :-)

Thanks for the quick response, RealZap. Re: the ala carte, well, it was just a thought. One tries to be constructive ;-). For the record, and since there is room enough, I will be buying both. I am as mean as the next man but always prepared to pay for quality.

Apologies for probably asking a question that has already been dealt with, but is there room in memory on the HD Desktop (Bean) for both the Metal and Vintage amp packs? * * * I noticed upthread that 'iknowathingortwo' made a robust case for the JC120 being in the Metal pack. I don't want to make that argument nor to criticise the marketing department at Line 6, but is there perhaps a third way? Would it be possible for a 'roll your own' user-selected $49 pack option to be introduced? That way everybody who is prepared to pay for the hard work and skill of the developers could pick their own cherries and be happy.
