They played it through 2 Active 1 x15" Peavey's,sounded horrendous. Then a single x 1x12" Yamaha DBR12",sounded better, but still unusable(to me). To my deaf old ears the factory Overdrive type,Helix patches sounded incredibly bad worse than the factory 500X patches, but the Helix cleans sounded much better than the Overdrive patches about on a par with the 500X. To be fair,i didn't expect much else, the guys in the Shop obviously had no idea how to navigate either unit,i don't expect they have hours of time to sit around playing with these kind of products, without the Manager giving them stiff looks. ;) The things i have are time & patience, the thing i don't have is tech ability & although i couldn't dial in a GT100,i hope i'll fair better with the 500X,when it arrives. I insisted on a New Boxed unit,i was never convinced the GT100 was as it should have been, least i hope not. :)

Ordered a HD500X today :) ,despite the crappy sound from the dealer Dem(including the Helix) :(
-
Agreed, with 2 guitars,i think i've developed my 2 amp sound, because since the mid 60's i've played in 3 piece bands & it fills out the Guitar sound nice, but still leaves the Bass & Drums clear & defined.

Firstly,i can't afford to calm down,i'll do that when i can't remember i'm not calm :) Now,i don't regard Dual Amps as something i can have if i want,i regard them as essential,i figured out a long time ago that 2 cheap amps work better in my gigging world(pubs),than 1 good Amp(For Me). If the 500X couldn't do Dual Amps,i wouldn't be interested in it,I would be ordering an AmpliFire instead,if i could afford 2 of them,i would have them. The main reason i would prefer the AmpliFire,is because i believe it's main focus is the Amp models & effects are secondary,i believe i would use about 2% of the effects in the 500X,because i don't use them,i fill out my sound with Dual Amps :) I'll stop now before i commence on a Novel.

Thanks, guys.I didn't pick up on the Video, that the phase issue was because it was mixed down to Mono,i thought it was panned L/R in the mixer section,or was it later in the signal path it was summed to Mono?.I'll watch it again & i'll see if i can figure it out. Cheers,Old(very)-Rocker :)

:) I think the world i play in,is somewhat different to the world you describe(but i have had my moments ;) )but i agree completely, maybe an old gen AC30 you could get away with1 vol,1 tone, but not something like the 500X. I'll repeat myself (again)it's the Dual Amp thing that's put the brakes on.
-
The bit that really got/worried me was the phasing bit,the difference after he reversed phased the "B" amp, with whatever it was he used, was not subtle, even i,could clearly here the difference :) ,in phase the 2 amps where a mess,in comparison the Amp "B" being out of phase sound was way better,. So what worried me was,if i had configured the Dual path myself,i wouldn't have known there was a possible phase issue  ,so in comparison to his phase corrected sound,my sound would have been really poor(this may have been why i failed with the GT100), because i always use 2 different amps, nowadays, & have for a long time(sorry repeating myself again). Of course the good news is now that i know this exists,i know to listen for it. In the meantime i'll continue scouring the threads(scaring myself to death)but learning,so hopefully i'll get to use the 500X better than i did the GT.
-
After reading a thread about tone building, particulary Dual Amps,I think i probably need to buy one of these & learn how to use/configure?it in the safety of my home :D . I think buying one this week & plugging it into something & gigging with it this weekend,is a stretch too far,so i'll just put up with using the one amplifier i have left, that still works & spend more time on the Edit software.

Thanks, does this comparison with quality of with the GT100 also apply to the HD500X & translate to higher quality audio?, sorry i'm a bit old & dim, what does physical interface apply to? Cheers.

I don't own a L6 product of any kind(yet),but i'm poking around the forum reading & trying to learn, before i spend the money i can't afford. I have question about this subject, but first,my only experience with an MFX product was a GT100 & i didn't get far with that, but my question is. Does the GT100 work in a different way to the HD/Helix,i have never heard a conversation on the Forums or anywhere about the GT running out of DSP,just curious. I also think that running 2 different Amps is almost essential to get a Pro sound,on small gigs, just my opinion of course. Oh & after reading another terrifying thread, how do you know the phasing of the Dual path is correct? :D

Brazzy,BillBee.Thanks for the words of encouragement,i've been plodding around on HD edit for a few days & i think i could get to grips with it,but i think i'm going to pick up a cheap modeling amp(Mustang III V2 ?) to use with an old DeLuxe 90,i've had as a spare for years, that'll get me up & running & then i can ditch the used Valve amp i'm useing now(bought in a moment of nostalgia)won't happen again. But i will buy a 500X & get to grips,i failed miserably with a GT100,i just couldn't get a good enough sound out of it to gig with,i suspect it's me not the GT,i bought & tried to gig with it without enough time spent. Brazzy ,i've had 2 x Cube 60 combos(modeling) running together with a different modeling sound on each, for about 10 yrs,no longer have them, hence my search for a new modeler or 2 :) . Before that i used 2 x AC30's,I run them the same way(both together)but with a graphic in one & a Boost in the other. Maybe i've been out of phase for 30 years or more :D As an aside i've had an AC30 of one sort or another since the early 60's,till the last one was stolen about 12 years ago :(

I have just watched the Vid by "skyproclaimist",i don't have much idea what he was doing with all the different screens, but it's made me realise i can't think about buying a 500X for gigging. One of the Big attractions of the 500X for me is being able to use 2 amp models for L/R signals(i've used 2 amps on gigs for years)but after watching the vid & listening to the in phase/out of phase section(which completely lost me)i realise i'm wasting my time time buying a 500 for gigging. Instead of buying one to gig with,i'm probably going to buy & hope i can get to grips with it,before i die :( . The really worrying thing for me is i didn't even know Dual Amp Models could be out of Phase,i thought that was just in the realms of pos/neg reversed on speakers etc or phase cancellation with a stereo speaker system because of alignment issues. I wouldn't have realised the Amp models had a phase problem, until i heard the result of what he did by putting another unit in the signal path to reverse phase of one Amp model. Is it possible my 2 combo amps i used for years had a phase problem & nobody(especially me) ever picked up on it ?. How can i learn about this & more importantly how to recognise it. These forums are amazing for people like me,& definitely prove the saying, you're never too old to learn :)

FlyingSquirrel & pianoguyy, .Sorry to waste your time, but thanks for replying,i have edited my original post.

Guys, please ignore this thread,i have just read another thread which has made me realise,I am so far off the pace with a unit like this,i couldn't consider trying to gig with one of these in the near or maybe distant future. Hi,i recently joined the Forum, after playing through a DT25 Combo, very impressed, but i didn't realise it was a Valve/Tube power Amp until i read it in the forum,i don't really want to get back into Valves. So while in the DT25 section of the forum,i read that the 500X has the same Pre-Amps models as the DT25(though there appears to be differing views on that)so i've started reading up on the 500X. So i'm interested in any getting the best gig sound i can out of a 500X ,should i be thinking guitar power amp & speakers?,or is there a decent combo amp ,i dont think a Monitor type speaker would sound "Guitar amp"enough for me,but who knows :) . I'm not really interested in accoustic sounds, just electric, mostly outdated pub rock. I should say that i tried to go this route with a GT100,but i couldn't even get it to sound as good as my 2 x Modeling Cube 60's(to me). But after playing through a DT25,which i think would work great for me,for gigging,i'm thinking maybe i can make a 500X work. So any recommendations/opinions,views,on what amp set up i should consider?,the more the merrier Guys, please ignore this thread,i have just read another thread which has made me realise,I am so far off the pace with a unit like this,i couldn't consider trying to gig with one of these in the near or maybe distant future.

Hi,ok i mean Subwoofers(i'm showing my age with Bass Bins :) )to be precise, our system is a Yamaha DSR consisting of 2 DSR 115 Mid/Highs & 2 DSR118W sub-woofers,the Subs have a fixed X-over point of 125hz. My only experience of running direct to Desk/P.A. is using a Boss GT100,which i couldn't get comfortable with(always sounded "muddy" :D) ,to me it always sounded worse than my mic'd up Cube 60 Modeler Combos, which as i stated above i shelved in the desk/mixer at 100hz & still had to role off the bass level on the channel. I do believe that in our system the GT100 even with a 85hz cut was getting into the Subs, but i can't check,it's gone. I would really like to go direct to PA & have a Monitor(FRFR)for my on stage sound, but my experience with the GT100,has made me think i won't adapt to it,just like our drummer won't adapt to V-Drums.etc ;) .
-
As usual,i didn't explain myself well enough,my point really was should the Guitar be getting into the Bass bins,in our case 2 x 18" active cabs, which are crossing over at about 125hz,or would it be better cutting off a bit higher(as Rewolf suggested) to keep the guitar sound out of the bass bins,i don't know what goes on nowadays with pro rigs, but maybe Malcolm Hill had it right after all back in the 80's & 90's. :)
-
I'm reading all i can in various sections, about 500X/DT25 & useing them in a live situation & maybe direct to PA etc. I've read in various threads about cutting off the Bass response from the HD500 at about 85hz, my first question is does a 6 string electric guitar go lower than 85hz(bottom E)?i've been playing for nearly 60yrs & embarrassingly i don't know. I think our Band PA is a fairly typical Small venue PA,where the Bass bins cut off at about 125hz into the Mid/Highs,so a fair amount of the Pod would be going into the Bass bins 18" speakers, would that not make the Guitar sound too bottom heavy? If i mic up my Moddeling Cube 60's(if required),then we normally push the 100hz shelf button in the on desk channel & then have to roll off the Bass in the channel. I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but i really have no idea about how a Modelled HD500 reacts in this scenareo.

Thanks, downloaded it & i've had a play around, with the edit,1 obvious thing i can't locate is the Output setting section for the 500,is this available in Edit or is it only available from the 500 itself? Hi,i'm curious about the highlighted comment
-
Thanks for the replies. Ok,I think i've got the idea about the operation of the knobs, thanks. Is it possible to download the HD Edit software & try some configuring without a 500X attached? I'd also like to make it clear that i'm just on the Forum finding out about different products,as i jump from 1 section to another,so my observations/comments i've made in the 3 threads i've started in 3 different sections, are not based on any knowledge of the products & how they work, they are just based on my reading in the forum & the products section, so i've asked questions based on what i've read & not from hands on with the products or software(except i have demoed a DT25 in a shop). I'm not on here being negative or critical,i'm just asking questions as i go along,i'm trying to get a feel for how i would use the 500X,DT25,D.R.,in a live situation. I've written the above, because i have no idea about the working or visualisation of the HD edit software etc,so i'm hoping when i ask any more ill informed questions about the operating of the 500X you won't mind answering :) I'm fairly old to still be gigging in bands & i'm only looking at new gear, because my last amplification set-up finally died(better the Amps than me :) )so i'm going to be very careful about which gear i buy as replacement & my ability to use it.

Hi,i've joined the forum recently to read up on Line 6 after demoing a DT25 & being very impressed,my enthusiasm was damped when i read it was a Valve/Tube power amp stage. Anyway i started reading & watching you tube dems about the Dream Rig(sounds amazing specially with dual DT25's) & i've been asking questions about this in the DR section about set-ups,control etc.. Now I'm old & slow & i'm a novice with MFX,my only experience was with a GT100(which didn't last long),but while reading up on the 500X,it's dawned on me that the control knobs appear to be Pots & not encoders, which on a product like the 500X means that when switching patches the values shown on the knobs in all probability bear no resemblance to the actual values in the Patch,is this correct,if so how on earth do you guys(who use the 500X on gigs)figure it out. Why are encoders not used instead of Pots?,or am i just missing the point & getting it wrong. Oh,i'm not trying to slag off the product,i'm really impressed with the sounds i've heard.

HD500X to DT25 connection ?
Old-Rocker replied to Old-Rocker's topic in Dream Rig - Line 6 Product Integration
Hi,Matt. Thanks again,so when the the 500 is linked to the DT(via digi Link),is the audio bypassing the DT pre,but the control of the 500 affecting the DT,pre?. Sorry if i'm being a bit dim,but what i'm trying to get at is if a setting/patch is stored in the 500X,does that setting transfer to the DT control panel,or is it only stored in the 500?,leaving the DT control panel unaffected by the changes made in the 500. I'm sorry to bang on about this, but i have used a friends Mustang III,& the way the controls go out of sync with the actual stored values when a different patch is selected, drives me up the wall. -
HD500X to DT25 connection ?
Old-Rocker replied to Old-Rocker's topic in Dream Rig - Line 6 Product Integration
Thanks, moogary.your reply leads me to what may be my last question on a DT/500X combination. I hope the answer to this is obvious, but i have to ask,if the 500X eq,gain parameters are changed when connected to the HD,if the 500X is unplugged, does the HD retain the modified settings, hence the controls(knobs)are out of sync?or does it retain the settings as shown by the knob positions on the panel. Hope i've made myself clear :) -
HD500X to DT25 connection ?
Old-Rocker replied to Old-Rocker's topic in Dream Rig - Line 6 Product Integration
Thanks,DarrellM5.can you also answer another question,i have read on the forum, that when changes are made to the controls(eq.etc.)on either unit,do the changes track on both units. Cheers,Graham. -
HD500X to DT25 connection ?
Old-Rocker replied to Old-Rocker's topic in Dream Rig - Line 6 Product Integration
Thanks Matt.i'm not sure i made myself clear,i'll ask it another way. When a HD500X is connected to the DT25 via the L6 Link cable, does the 500X connect direct to the Power Amp section of the DT25? Or does the 500X interact with the Pre-Amp section of the DT25. The reason i'm asking this is to find out if the knob settings on the DT25 go out of sync with the indicated values on the knobs,i'm not sure this is clearer but here goes. -
Hi,i'm reading my through the various topics on the DT25(my initial interest in L6),the HD500X & now the "Dream Rig",great name :) I think this is a simple question, but i've not been able to find the answer(i'm sure it's here, but). When connecting the 500X to the DT25 via the L6 link, what section of the DT25,is the 500X connecting to i.e. pre or power? Thanks.
