Palico
So this post by Smybacki had a great idea of creating some template for some of the basic style rigs as a start point for creating new tones. http://line6.com/support/topic/12637-i-took-a-deep-breath-and-heeded-the-advice-i-recieved-here/ So sitting here thinking about what are some templates for your average to create. Sytles (I could think of that might be useful): Classic 60's Rock Classic 70's Rock 80's Hair Band DJent Tone Shred Acousitc Delta Blues Chicago Blues Modern Rock Rockabilly Old School Country Modern Clean Country Modern Dirt Country Jazz R&B Pop What am I missing? What would your setup basic on any of these you are knowable in be?
smrybacki
Classic 60's Rock -- wow, that's wide open but I'd go with the Rckenbacker guitar and Vox CA series amps Classic 70's Rock -- For me, Les Paul/Marshall Plexi or Strat/Fender with Fuzz amp 80's Hair Band -- Marshall 800 and a pointy guitar with one knob Shred -- Probably the Mesa, Engl or Ubershall amp sims and a pointy guitar with 2 knobs and battery assist pickups Acousitc Delta Blues -- Resonator and a dimed tweed amp Chicago Blues -- Buddy Guy likes Strats and a Bassman but Muddy Waters liked a Tele and I would say the Gibson amp Rockabilly Gretsch and a Fender amp with slapback echo Old School Country Tele and a fender Twin or DeluxeThe templates I am making are more along the lines of classic combinations of guitars and amps. For example, I have:-- Strat into a Marshal Plexi -- Les Paul into a Marshall Plexi -- Strat into Hiwatt (Gilmour type sounds) -- Rickenbacker into a Vox AC (Tom Petty/Roger McGuin etc.. jangle tone) -- Gretsch into a Fender twin -- Tele Into a Fender Twin -- Tele into Fender Deluxe -- Strat into Bassman etc...you get the idea. But doing what you're doing is a great place to start too...thing is if you think about it, different musical groups can use vastly different gear and still be the same style which is why I went the way I did. If I was going to play a Pearl Jam song for example, I'd need to decide first whether I wanted Mike McCreedy's Strat.Marshall sound or STone Gossard's Les Paul Marshall-esque type sound right? Same band, same style different sounds.
MartinDorr
Great thread. Curious to see what's coming. Too novice to contribute ;-(.
wilson69978
Will you guys post your templates on custom tone? Just to add a bit to the excellent idea you guys have. ... I was thinking of a set list with different amps using the same guitars , or different guitars using the same Amp. Once organized into SET LISTS you could change up tones quickly. This method may not work for users who are trying to nail the tone of every cover song they do, But it could offer a lot of flexibility to players who are less critical of sounding exactly like the original tune. As an example the first three banks might be... Fender deluxe with strat Fender deluxe with les Paul Fender deluxe with Gibson 335 Fender deluxe with telecaster Fender bassman with strat Fender bassman with les Paul Fender bassman with Gibson 335 Fender bassman with telecaster Vox ac 30 with les Paul Vox ac 30 with strat vox ac 30 with rickenbacker Vox ac 30 with telecaster The other thing I am working on is consistency of my effects. By that I mean finding the effects I use most often and keeping them consistent thru My presets. So for example my compressor is always on F1 , my Distortion is on F2, tremolo F3, Reverb F4. Etc... I am not carving this in stone, it is just an approach I am trying. I have been able to get an astounding variety of sounds from any one preset by setting up the amp properly, using my volume and tone knobs, and turning on and off various effects. Good luck in your efforts everyone!
