Factory reset, want to retain my patches- save a bundle or a setlist to my desktop ?

I want to do a factory reset to get a look at some of the updated HELIX factory patches. Prior to doing a facotry reset I've saved a bundle backup to my desktop with my custom-sequenced presets.

Are these the correct protocols;

1. first, review the updated factory presets I may want to keep,

2. second, save these updated HELIX factory presets to my desktop

3. third, re-import the saved 'bundle'

Will I see my custom ordered+named patches in the exact same slots I left them ? And the factory preset patches where I assigned them ? Should I be backing up via 'bundle', or 'setlist' ?

How do I retain my saved custom-sequenced patches and retain the newly selected factory presets ?

In step 2 above I would save the desired factory presets to my computer rather than to chosen slots. Then restore you saved custom presets (setlists would be better if you saved them). Then drag/drop the saved factory presets to your chosen slots.

In your intro you say that you've saved a folder of your custom ordered presets. Re-importing these as you describe in step 3 won't necessarily retain their order. That's why I would save the setlist rather than individual presets. Importing a setlist does retain the preset order.

Thanks Silverhead, I edited my original post to better articulate my questions.

I've been wondering about this, haven't tried it, so excuse the ignorant questions

Does a setlist contain the settings for the actual patches themselves, or is it only an ordered list of patch names?

So for instance, can you have the same patch in more than one setlist, so updating it in any setlist updates it everywhere it's used?

If you export a setlist, does that back up all those patches, or do you also have to save them as patches?

A setlist contains all settings for all presets in the setlist. It is not just an ordered list of names.

If the same preset exists in different setlists it remains a unique preset. Changing one does not affect the other(s).

Exporting a setlist backs up all presets but you cannot restore/import individual presets. If you want to import an individual preset you must first save it as an individual preset.

Thanks Silverhead, just to be clear- I have been backing up as a 'bundle'. But if I re-import a 'bunde' I won't see my presets as I have them sequenced. For that I need to save a setlist to my desktop- correct ?

No, a bundle saves every preset in every setlist on the Helix - it's the whole enchilada. A setlist saves the presets in that specific setlist (in the order you have them). You can reload it into any of the setlist slots on the Helix.

If you import a bundle it will restore all presets in all setlists in the order and state they were in at the time of export/saving. But you can't import individual setlists or presets using a bundle file.

Each exportable item - preset, setlist, and bundle - contains all details of all contained items. A preset contains all details of all amp and FX settings. A setlist contains all details of all presets, including the individual preset details. A bundle contains all details of all setlists, including all preset details. However, you can only import at the same 'level' that you exported. You can't import the details of just the amp from a preset file. You can't import a specific preset from a setlist file. You can't import a specific setlist from a bundle file.

Electricfactory, I personally don't use bundles to restore after an update. If line 6 does an update and adjusts the factory presets, the bundle backup will overwrite the new one line 6 just put on the Helix (I think).

Personally,

1. I do a bundle for that rare time I need to reinstall all. Haven't used yet.

2. I export setlists. User 1, user 2, etc. I use these to restore my setlists after an update

3. I drag and drop each preset into a folder. These I use when I mess up a preset. I go into the folder I saved it and drag it into the Helix to "fix" restore what I just screwed up.

If you have factory presets that you have modified, I suggest you save them in a user setlist location.

Just a note, my windows 10 laptop does not automatically add the .hls or .hlb. I have to type them in. I was backing up and then couldn't find the backups.
