Soultrainer
Can helix record its own playback like my Boss could? I try to put Helix to recording device in Audacity and play over backing track. it only records my guitar but not the backing track. So the question is that is Helix unable to record it`s own playback?
silverhead
Not sure I understand. Please describe your setup more completely. Where exactly is the backing track? Is it a previously recorded track in Audacity? Is it a loop recorded on Helix? Is it from an external device being fed into Helix? Describe your Helix preset. How many paths? What is on each path? What are the path Output(s) set to? Describe your Audacity configuration. What is the Audio Setup? What driver are you using?

Helix works as pc sound card/interface and PC sounds are going trough Helix -> active monitor. I cant answer those preset path etc questions since I just got this yesterday and dont know too much of this. I guess it doesnt matter what Helix configurations are or can you set it from there to also record PC also? I suppose that backing track goes from PC to Helix and back to PC to record it just like guitar sound goes from guitar to Helix and to PC to record it. No matter if I play just backing track and try to record it with audacity, it records nothing. Audacity recording device is to Helix. It records the guitar but nothing else. jabak
The part about disabled devices is important.
Soultrainer
The part about disabled devices is important. Thanks but it didnt help. The stereo mix is only for PC:s sound card I guess. When I used my Boss Me-80 I just put it to record everything that comes from Boss and it recorded guitar and backing track. Back in the days I bought some interface and it could not record its own playback (I assured this from the company) and I sold it right away. I didnt even understand to ask this because I was so sure that these days all interfaces can do the trick. It would help if someone has been able to record sound from example youtube via Helix so I would waste my time trying to do this if it is impossible with Helix. If it is possible I will find the way or maybe some one could tell me how to do it.
mkornell
I'd just use an online utility to pull the YouTube video as an mp3 or wav file, then import that as a track into your Audacity project. That gives you way more flexibility with how you can deal with the background audio rather than just relying on a live stream.
silverhead
The audio coming directly from your computer into Helix via USB channels 1 and 2 is not available for recording through Helix. Here's what the user manual says about it: "USB inputs 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8 can all be used for processing tracks from your Mac® or Windows® DAW software. See "USB Audio" Helix also receives input from USB 1/2, but it's dedicated for monitoring audio from your computer (or iPad) and bypasses all processing blocks. As such, it's not available as an input block source."

This seem the most sensible approach to achieve what you want, because at the moment you really are wasting your time. I would suggest that you grab yourself a 60 day free download of "Reaper" DAW and play around with recording your Helix and backing tracks from there. It would certainly give you a lot more scope for experimentation with the combination of hardware and software. It should be a reasonable starting point. Get it here: http://www.reaper.fm Have fun. zooey
Reaper is great, very capable DAW, but if you're new to the DAW world, you might find the free version of Studio One easier to get your head around. I think it's called Studio One Prime.
Soultrainer
Thanks for the answers. I recorded the backing track from youtube straight to Audacity. Then I play the guitar on another track. I guess you cant add a video to Audacity. How do you record if you want to record video also? Can Reaper or Studio One Prime add video to the tracks? before Helix I have just set my Boss ME-80 as a recording device to my HD webcam and it was that simple, it recorded guitar, backing track and video at the same time. Sure that I cant edit the music if I record it all at the same time but I am new to DAW and they have always seemed to be too complicated to me. Maybe I try Reaper or Studio One Prime free versions and see if I can do something with them.
