Tehzim
I'm going through options for using Helix at home. I'm in a 12x12 bedroom and my Blackstar HT-5R is too loud for my living situation. So it seems that a proper FRFR set up won't work for me. My understanding is that a powered monitor at a higher volume would sound better than an FRFR speaker at much lower volume. Thus I arrived this thought: Is it better to get a pair of less expensive monitors (in this case the JBL LSR305 for $300 a pair) or a single Yamaha HS8 for $350? I've considered getting a small power amp (like a EHX 44 Mag) and a cab but I think I'd end up in the same situation. The goal is to have a satisfying sound at low volume. I'd just use headphones (Audio Technica ATH-M50x) but I'd like a little more freedom. I've searched the boards and can't find a topic that answers this specific question. Thanks again! ricksteruk
If you don't have any other studio monitors you could use then I'd go ahead and get a pair. That way you can listen to stereo mixes on them... so when you decide to start making recordings (by plugging your computer or iPad by USB into Helix) you can properly listen to your mix in glorious stereo. Also you can use them to listen to any old music. I'd also suggest that there is still a place for the BlackStar used in conjunction with Helix if you want to. If you set it up in 4cm you should be able to get some nice tube grit from the preamp, but then use Helix's volume control to limit the overall level that comes out of the speaker. Or just use Helix modelled amp (not cab) and then feed that into the Blackstar's FX return. But it will still sound like your Blackstar in the room and not a miked Fender twin or Archon or whatever - so the studio monitors, a Helix cab block (or IR) and a pair of monitors for that. MusicLaw
For near field use, a pair of JBL LSR305 are an outstanding choice and very reasonably priced.
Verne-Bunsen
I didn't run a stereo rig before Helix, so I found a single FRFR cab was most comfortable and familiar. I got an Atomic CLR and couldn't be happier. I do my mixing in headphones so I can deal with stereo.
