themetallikid Posted October 25, 2019 Share Posted October 25, 2019 So I put together some intro music for my band to play before we start....there is a section in the the middle that would be great with some vocal audio over the top...cheesy, sure, but I think it works.... Anyway, I've never recorded into the laptop before. What settings and such do I need to make sure are enabled. couple things: 1) I've recorded on laptops/cpus before in using on board stuff and just running into a mic input and adjusting levels (your talking 20 years ago and no budget for quality stuff, vocals were with an old PC mic, lol) 2) I have a preset that I use for acoustic/vocal in the same preset and was trying to use that, however, I'm not sure I have the outputs on the Helix right or the inputs on the laptop correct as I was getting no audio. If I used the onboard mic of the laptop I could get it to work. 3) I'm using the free version of Audacity as I don't do this stuff often, but if I can get it to work, I may want to maybe record some stuff so I can hear it played back (to really hear how horrible my playing is). I tried changing my output on the helix to USB 1/2, then tried Multi in case that wasn't right.... but I couldn't seem to get any input on the laptop even with checking audacity's settings (these could be wrong as well. What I can say is that Reaper's free trial worked right out of the box for me. So . . . you might want to give that free program a try? Or an Audacity user can chime in . . . silverhead Posted October 25, 2019 Share Posted October 25, 2019 Need to be careful with Audacity. I believe its default driver is called ASIO4ALL which is not a fully compliant ASIO driver and is known to cause problems with Line 6 products in some cases. Some people seem to use it without problems while others have problems. It is not supported by Line 6; if you do have problems Line 6 support will tell you to use their supported driver. silverhead Posted October 25, 2019 Share Posted October 25, 2019 Various and unpredictable problems as I understand it - but serious as in it makes the system unreliable. Not just stuttering or some other thing that can be easily fixed by adjusting buffers or optimizing CPU usage. I've never used Audacity/ASIO4ALL myself - just reporting what I've read from others. The basic problem is that it's not a true ASIO implementation, hence there can be communication hiccups between the audio interface and the DAW. gunpointmetal Posted October 25, 2019 Share Posted October 25, 2019 You should be able to choose the Helix as the audio hardware connected to Audacity, just make sure you're using the driver that installs with HX Edit.
