2.01 update - better sound?

Hi PodGo players,

I updated to V2.01 fixing just 1 bug: „Audio could ramp up upon preset load“. Don’t know exactly what that means. Anyway.

I expected a short update process because it was just 1 bug fix. But the update process lasted surprisingly long – felt like 5 Minutes or so.

After turning on my PodGo I was very astonished about the different sound my ears heard.

Much fuller and more differentiated. Suddently distortion pedals sounded good with amps which didn’t before.

I am very happy with the sound improvement coming with 2.01.

Did my ears play a trick?

Did anyone else make the same experience?

Thanks to L6 if the sound improvement was intentional!

A firmware update takes the same amount of time regardless of the number of bug fixes. It does not overwrite a small amount of code; it overwrites the entire memory space. It takes the same amount of time even if you simply reinstall the current firmware version, involving no new features or bug fixes.

Perceived sonic improvements might simply be a placebo effect or it could be very real. It depends partly on the firmware version you are updating from. For instance, if your device was previously running a pre-v2.0 firmware version you are hearing the dramatic improvement due to the new Cab engine. Also, a firmware update resets the Global Settings to their default values. It’s possible that you pre-update settings were not optimized for your equipment, and now they are.

V2. 01 fixed a single bug, which was incorrectly explained in the release notes. In v2. 0 when you changed patches there was a very slight DROP (not a ramp up) in volume. In my view it was almost imperceptible and when it was pointed out to me I had to go back and listen carefully to hear it and even then it was only there if you changed a patch whilst eg holding a chord or holding a lead note.

Line 6s 'fix' was to replace the split second of volume drop with a split second of silence. I'm still not sure which is preferable but frankly for the odd occasion when you might want a seamless patch change, using snap shots might be fractionally faster.

BUT even then it depends on how many and which parameter changes you've made. Particularly when changing delay parameters and multiple parameters, Pod Go does this in an order sequence and because of its more limited single chip processing power, even with snapshots you'll sometimes hear an odd artefact for a split second.

Only mfx with significantly more processing power like Helix or the Boss GT1000 can deliver truly 'instant' switching with no lag, at least not that the human ear can detect.

To me this instant, seamless switching desire (obsession?) just cracks me up.  Do folks not have rests in their guitar parts?  Are we always playing notes or chords, the entire song, non-stop?

Music theory 101 - 1/4 note or 1/8th note rests are just as important as the notes.

I tend to switch patches or snapshots 1/2 or 1 beat before I need it, typically at the "4-and" beat if in 4/4 while muting my strings.

I also use 2 or 3 adjacent presets live, not more, so a single tap works.

People could also opt for a bit more space in their playing or soloing...but that's a whole other topic.

Cheers.
