Interfacing with the Boss VG-800 or Eurus Guitar

Recommended Posts

Boss seems to be doing well with this kind of technology. I was just wondering if there are ways to combine the Variax/Helix stuff with Boss' tech. It would be cool to pull it off somehow as I sense that Boss is going to stay up with it.

Can you be more specific? What do you mean by ‘combine’ in terms of features or capabilities?

Not sure what I mean exactly......Sorry.

Perhaps accessing the Boss guitar tones via MIDI or another way using a Variax? Or combining certain guitar tones in order to fatten them up a bit. Many of the Variax tones were lacking and sterile and it would be cool to use a Variax/Helix in conjunction with the Boss stuff in order to warm up some tones, I have not played the Boss but as it is years ahead of the Variax I would think that they might have some improved tones.

I’m not sure the BOSS is years ahead. They have had the V-guitar and pickup for years, including the Roland GR-300 guitar synth. Strikes me that what’s new here for Boss is the integration of amp/FX in the same box as their guitar processor. I don’t know whether there’s any new guitar modeling.

But I don’t know a lot about Boss so may be entirely wrong here.

In any case they are completely different and proprietary technologies. I doubt that they can be easily combined except for obvious things like connecting the Variax 1/4” output into the VG-800:input, or perhaps the Boss V-pickup output into Helix.

Well a common request of L6 for years was to provide some kind of access to the individual strings provided by the Variax piezos,  and nothing ever came of it.  Given the EOL status of the Variax line I'd doubt we'll see any movement there.

But even then Roland hasn't exactly made it easy, with the new GK5 class pickups.  I have 2 Roland-ready Strats, a Godin nylon SA and a floater GK2a pickup - looks like I'd have to spend $200 to buy a format converter if I want in to the new stuff.  I've got plenty of 13 pin synth stuff, so I think I'll be passing on this new generation.
