  1. Well, almost here! Too funny - though I ordered it all at the same time, the case shipped about an hour before the JTV; so the Epiphone LP case just arrived today, and the JTV while it's in Chicago at the FedEx location, is telling me delivery tomorrow. Still, will have a day to check it over and make sure all is well before we jam on Friday.
  2. I would imagine you have that correct. Especially since people are reporting the issue - with no other mitigating factors - appearing or vanishing based on that 1.9 to 2.0 update. I'm with ya! Think positive, it's the best way to be. :) I suppose with the HD500 vs HD500x, the issue wasn't really addressed, it was just shuffled down to an improvement in the product line. They may not have realized that the DSP issue was so significant until after it was too late to do anything about it. For me, the patch change pop is an actual "problem" or "error" whereas, while the DSP max out is troubling, it's not actually an error - it's just an oversight on the development team. That the HD500x is still able to max out DSP suggests that they knew the problem existed from the start, and just chose to ignore it - otherwise had they no realized, they wouldn't have encoded something to say "DSP limit reached" or whatever that error message is. By having the code tell you DSP is reached, they basically are saying that the cost vs DSP limit was a deciding factor in how to deal with that problem. Ideally, the JTV "popping" sound can be handled with programming changes, and not require some larger factor(s) to be adjusted.
  3. Well, I am happy to at least know that 1.9 is "pop" free! I suppose with 2.0, it's a case of "three steps forward, two steps back". Some things are better, but other things are worse. It would appear that the overall concept of giving us "HD" instrument models may have hit a previously unanticipated DSP wall or some other architecture related issue. Which would suck, since their model of doing business with the HD500 became the 500x... I don't want to hear in 6 months that their solution to this problem is to sell us JTV59X. Back in the day, they paid to repair my X3L when it had the footswitch problems, and they did the repair on all the footswitches, not just the defective one. With DSP, motherboards, onboard RAM and whatnot, I can imagine it's not as easy to offer everyone a hardware updgrade. But, I do have positive hopes for the parts of the this gear that work right and well to do what I want! With the snow storm the delivery is knocked back a day, so my JTV should arrive tomorrow, and we jam on Friday. One question: is there a way without connecting the JTV to a computer to know which firmware is installed on it? Last, but not least, I think I have just added "attend NAMM" at least once to my bucket list... Looks like about the most fun on the planet for music gear enthusiasts! Should be intriguing to see what this new product is, tomorrow being January 23rd..
  4. Attempting to compile the multiple "Patch Change Pop" threads. Seems like a common issue that lives with the 2.0 firmware, and doesn't exist in the previous firmware for the JTV. My questions are the same as all of yours: 1.) Has anyone figured out how to stop this from happening while retaining the 2.0 firmware? 2.) Has anyone received any formal acknowledgement from L6 with support tickets? 3.) Does it happen consistently, with every patch change? Or is it model/amp specific? "JTV Popping Noise Changing Models through HD500": http://line6.com/support/topic/4801-jtv59-popping-noise-changing-models-though-hd500/ "Jtv59 To Hd500 Vdi Getting A Pop When I Change Patchs That Also Change Variax Model": http://line6.com/support/topic/2167-jtv59-to-hd500-vdi-getting-a-pop-when-i-change-patchs-that-also-change-variax-model/?hl=popping&do=findComment&comment=13928 "Flashware 2.0 Odd Issues Jtv59 And Hd500": http://line6.com/support/topic/3913-flashware-20-odd-issues-jtv59-and-hd500/?hl=popping&do=findComment&comment=34275
  5. Were you able to make any settings changes that eliminated the patch-change-pop? I think from reading the forums that this is not an isolated issue, and seems 100% to come with the 2.0 firmware update. Basically, all subjective tone related differences aside, if the new firmware is causing popping sounds when changing patches, then something is wrong with the new firmware. Period. End of sentence. Next sentence, how and when will the problem be corrected by L6? Does it matter if the patches are existing, or created from scratch?> digging into the deeper editing on the HD500, has ANYONE been able to "Stop the Pop" by altering settings anywhere / anyhow? I realize the new firmware improves certain models, and subjective perception aside, an HD modelled version of the guitars is better than a non-HD version - basically the new stuff inherently would be considered "better" by logic alone. However, there are documented issues which eclipse pure logic. It's probably fair to downgrade the 2.0 firmware as "beta testing" / "use at your own risk" / "contains known flaws"
  6. I imagine the primary issue with how to use the acoustics, is that the elec guitar models are creating a line level signal - emulating the pickups. Whereas the acoustics, rather than emulating string response, and modelling wood and body response - the sound of a guitar with a mic on it, rather than just the sounds of the guitar. Sort of like with the HD500 - you can make it sound like an amp+cab with a mic on it - or you can make it sound like just the amp, and leave the mic to the actual air. Perhaps with the acoustic models, if they had a type of setting on the JTV that is similar to the settings on the HD - studio/direct = acoustic in a room with a mic. "? (akin to combo/stack)" = sound of the acoustic guitar with no room / mic modelling. I guess that is where it gets tricky - you are playing the electric models with one way of sound creation, and then the acoustic models shift to a different mode of thought. The strat model has nothing to do with "room" or "mic" - it's a strat with pickups plugged into something. Perhaps the acoustics could be thought of in a similar manner - here is a Martin with a mic on it. That sounds very different than a Martin with a piezo pickup plugged in..
  7. On that note, I can't wait to have the house to myself one weekend soon, where I can stay up late, and spend all day on a Saturday or Sunday experimenting with patches, amp models, and guitar models. I really want to find a way to use the acoustic models, which may take some tweaking to get them usable - between the DT25 not being the ideal vehicle for acoustic tones, and the new JTV firmware causing such a hulla-balloo, I feel I'll have my work cut out for me. I suppose I'd like to start with the new firmware, so I have no pre-existing conceptions of what it should sound like - but if using the new firmware means popping sounds when changing HD patches, then rollback it is, and wait for a proper upgrade. I can live with subjective A vs B, which sounds better - but NO ONE will argue that a loud popping sound is something that is supposed to happen, when it didn't happen on a previous firmware, and that is where the subjective ends, and the support tickets begin. What I am unsure of, is if this popping sound being reported is happening to everyone on the new JTV firmware, or if it is patch / setting specific. IE, they changed some things between 1.9 and 2.0, and in the process, created new guitar models. Those models may have settings that are causing the error noises - has anyone who experienced the popping patch change syndrome been able to make it stop whilst retaining the newest 'HD' firmware? Could it be DSP related? Does it exhibit this erroneous behavior on the HD500 and the 500x, or is it attributed to certain amp / model / fx / guitar model selections? Or is it just not our problem, Line6 needs to acknowledge their mistake, and FIX IT!? Typically when you buy new stuff, you don't want to manage expectations so drastically on the first day of use. Like I have said elsewhere, I typically take a minimalist approach to my patch programs, so we'll know right quick if this is a DSP overload issue, or some unrelated entity. For example, when using the HD500 to change models on the JTV, does the popping have anything to do with the type of connection from JTV to HD? IE, does it pop or not pop when using 1/4" vs VDI, or does it matter if the L6 link to a DT is connected or not? I would imagine it matters not if connected via headphones or to an actual amp, but for conversations sake, and in terms of getting to the bottom of the problem quicker, a more point by point analysis of this problem is called for. For example, person 'A' says they like the new JTV firmware. Person 'B' says it is horrible. That is subjective. Whereas, "does it make a loud popping sound when you force model change on hd500 patch?" is not subjective, it's a "yes" or "no" response. If yes, then - is there anything you can think of which would be causing this that can be edited at the user level? If all options are exhausted, then it's on Line6.
  8. Yeah, I was thinking I would need to get a proper variax cable. Will any standard ethernet cable work? I saw a post somewhere on the forums about a nice cable someone found, they have a protective sleeve around the ends, and more 'instrument cable' look, with shielding and such. Will scope out what the G.C. has before we jam Friday. And yeah, that's exactly the thinking. I can play guitar, and we already have a guitarist - so to sounds unique, I want to re-examine my approach to playing technique (fingers, plucking), and the types of sounds I can create layering weirdness, guitar and amp models, things like that. Ultimately it's the notes and the tone that matter; how one gets there is the fun in it! Having played bass for a while in a band, my approach to guitar tends to be a bit haphazard. There are times when I play too much; other times not enough. Finding a swell middle ground is my goal. I don't really have any specifics worked out, but with the three components, I can see using the programming on the HD to help control amps with the DT and guitar models on the JTV, which ultimately is what any of these tools should accomplish: freeing up the musician to play music, rather than play pedals.
  9. I guess one use would be to dial in totally different amp models and tones, and merge them; though it would be such a tap dance to keep the two HD500's on the right patches. I guess you could have one HD set as a common rhy tone, and use the other to go all crazy warp drive stuff.
  10. I think you addressed the main issue; I didn't realize the two outputs couldn't be set to different configurations - IE, was wondering if the onboard regular pickups could be sent out just the 1/4", with the modelled VDI out the other. It would appear that question is answered!
  11. Anyone try plugging their JTV 1/4" out into one HD500 and the ethernet variax plug into a second HD500?
  12. That is a definite plus for me as well. The room we're in has good, clean power, but the stages at gigs can be a whole beast unto themselves. I actually had more issues when I used to play bass, it was hit or miss with DI's with my 5 string, used to have to find a spot and not move too much, or risk becoming a buzz antenna! Overall, the HD500 > DT25 using the L6 link has been flawless - at least in terms of unwanted noise. I use a noise gate at the front end of my patches, but I am looking forward to leaving that off, and see where it goes. I finally went all in, and ordered a JTV59 yesterday; it should arrive tomorrow.
  13. For now, I went with the Epiphone hard case; it arrives...with the JTV59 tomorrow! according to the FedEx tracking.. :) I ended up going with Zzounds after they offered to price match the JTV59 sale price being advertised on Gtr Center. I only had five days to decide, but 45 days after it arrives to more carefully consider. The 'processing' fee to use their 8 payment plan was still substantially less than the $100 in tax with G.C. Thus far, Sweetwater refused to price match another user here, and they haven't responded to my price match request. They were only offering it as a 3-payment plan, or using their credit line. But the sale price is $400 less than the $1,499 that everyone else is offering. Bundling the two together also makes the case 8 payments, so if I return the guitar can do the same with the case, not being much at all out of pocket to indulge my G.A.S. That being said, If I keep this rig, would certainly like to track down that Hiscox case, it just looks solid, and I like the fact that it fits snug, but has extra storage space inside.
  14. Well, 2014 is going to be a great year! For me, it means getting back into playing music after a relatively lengthy hiatus, and buying myself some new Line6 gear. Almost a year at the job now, and it's looking good for where things are going. Very excited to add the third piece to the "Dream Rig", my JTV59 arrives tomorrow from Zzounds.. Here's to hoping to arrives all in one piece! And that the powers which be get the corrected HD firmware updated ASAP! :) A little history - preceded by a horrible Boss ME50 pedal, I moved to the X3L, used it for years, then switched up to the HD500 when it came out. (I've had the HD500 since 2010). Now, in 2014, I just added the DT25 1x12 combo last week, and when I saw the JTV's on sale, decided to go all the way down the rabbit hole. For what it's worth, Zzounds did price match the Guitar Center sale price, and they still offer the 8 payments plan. Added the Epiphone LP hard case to the order, so all in all, a relatively light monthly bill for the next 7 months to pay for the gear. If you can put it all on a card you'll avoid some fees, since they all are offering interest free financing; though it would appear at least that Sweetwater will not price match (even though their price is $400 more than the guitar center sale price....) No tax with Zzounds either. G.C charges tax. SO. Good timing with the arrival tomorrow, we have an after work jam scheduled for Friday, and Saturday I have off this week! Bammm! Psyched. Hopefully won't open the package and see a bent knob or some other horrible QC issue... Will keep ya'all posted tomorrow! Most likely also won't have time to update the firmware, though this is a new shipment that just arrived, so it's vaguely possible they already have 2.0 on it. Anyhow, will have to get serious about learning how to program my patches on the HD500 now! I've always taken a minimalist approach to what I actually use on the POD. My thinking is now changing to the mode which sets all the FS buttons to control FX and amp parameters. I keep stepping on FS4 when I try to set the delay tap tempo. I may also set up some patches with the FS1-4 still doing patch changes, but make those four basically variations of a common theme / amp. As in, four duplicate Plexi patches, where the only difference is the amount of gain dialed in on the amp model. I'll need to spend some time testing out some ideas, now that I will have all three parts, and figure out what works best for my playing style and the type of music we'll do. So, on that note, just yesterday had a thought about how I would describe what I play - in terms of role in the band. I would call me the "Synth Player". Yes, it's a guitar, and yes it emulates amps and guitars, and no it's not a keyboard - but more to the point, I wouldn't want to 'compete' with or attempt to match amp and guitar sounds being created by the other guy I play with. He's 100% analog - I actually just bought a used Keeley 4 knob compressor, and loaned it to him indefinitely to help his rig come together. Greatest analog pedal I have ever used! That thing in the FX loop of a nice tube amp is literally all you need. I digress. My rambling goes to this idea: I am the keyboard player in the band. I just use a guitar to get the sounds.. Rather than being a "two guitar" lineup, I am thinking in terms of he is the guitar player, and I am the "synth" guitarist. With the insane amount of variation available in amp models and guitar models, I would embrace the synthetic and digital nature of the sounds being created, and almost push them into less realistic tones - just sounds that are cool to hear, mix well with a guitar-bass-drums kind of funk/rock/blues/jam sound. I'd like to involve the looper as well, get into some exploration of space and breakdown the idea of "rhy guitar" and "lead guitar". That's all for now. Just a though that hit me.. People always say "digital" with some derision or judgment or condemnation, but the reality is, most of what you hear at any big broadcast or concert or large scale music event involves a substantial amount of "digital". Whether it's the mixer, the amps, the PA, this that or the other thing - digital is not bad, it's just different. You hear a keyboard do a guitar solo, and you think "Cool!". You hear a guitar modeller through an amp model do a solo, and you think "digital". For me, I'd like to make it sound like all the various instruments that the Variax can do; down the road, I'd love to have the ability to buy add on instrument models for the Variax - woodwinds, strings, keys, whatever. The JTV59 as a trumpet, or flute, or electric piano, or whatever! I realize that's more the MIDI world of triggers, and this is a different beast, but the two worlds are slowly coming closer. Cheers!
  15. Wild speculation aside, one thing that will definitely be at NAMM 2014 is the new USA Supro amps!
  16. I figured it out. They gave it away with the post "You've finally met your match". It's a dating service for musicians!! It matches your gear purchases and GPS location with appropriate minded partners who won't frown upon Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Spouse#1: "Ummm, sweetie? Can I buy the new..." Spouse#2: "NO!! Because I already ordered..two of them! One for me, one for you, it arrived this afternoon." :)
  17. That's probably the smart idea!I was considering doing just that, and GC mentioned they offer interest free financing for 12 months, which would have ended up being less per payment than the 8 installments from Zzounds. I just wasn't 100% confident in my ability to get approved for the credit; with the Zzounds offer I just need to have the $140/month, without needing a full $1,100 credit line. I am surprised Sweetwater wouldn't price match! Though none of the other online companies have updated their currently advertised pricing, so I am guessing it's a "Sale" rather than the "New" price.... We'll see what unfolds. Funny, the G.C. by me also just has the Cherry in stock, and I also prefer the look of the Tobacco..
  18. Coupling that observation with the other little pinned post they made, which says "The Cloud got Loud", it seems like johnnyayyy might be on to something. Cloud based control? of what exactly, remains the question. And what controls. As I was totally joking in my last post (about 'Disaster Area' from Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide novels), turns out I may have been more accurate than intended! Seems like Cloud / WIFI / cellular / wireless transmission tech has increased steadily over time, so the speculation that one might use a cell phone or other app based gadget to control some new L6 gear is seemingly a good guess. Though I just bought a DT25, it will be well within the 45days in the event that whatever new thing is so awesome I can still return the DT25 and upgrade. Though having now spent two sessions with the DT cranked up, I will most likely keep 'er. No offense to analog pedals, patch cables, and old school tube amps, but the DT rig is insanely easy to set up, makes no unwanted noise, cranks the volume to more-than-I-need levels, and handles the HD500 FX with utter aplomb. Though, if they are going to be getting all crazy with new gear, it will definitely require a visit to the Doctor before my G.A.S. gets any worse than it already is....
  19. Three days huh?!!... It's a "musician modelling" device, that allows you and your band to gig from home. You can set your band outfit to one of several vintage clothing choices, while actually lounging on the couch in your pajamas. The entire stage rig is HD lifelike projected holograms and the soundstage is projected wireless from several miles away. Much like the band "Disaster Area" from the 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' novels. ;) "Disaster Area was a plutonium rock band from the Gagrakacka Mind Zones and was generally regarded as not only the loudest rock band in the Galaxy, but also as being the loudest noise of any kind at all. Regular concert goers judged that the best sound balance was usually to be heard from within large concrete bunkers some thirty-seven miles away from the stage, whilst the musicians themselves played their instruments by remote control from within a heavily insulated spaceship which stayed in orbit around the planet - or more frequently around a completely different planet."
  20. For what it's worth when I emailed them, Zzounds offered to price match the gtr ctr sale price. And that does include the option to do their 8 payment plan. GC charges sales tax so that alone saves over $100 even when the two prices are equal. I would guess Sweetwater and other similar web stores would do the same offer to match
  21. I pulled this out of the archived forums. For the JTV59, this case is recommended by Rowbi, who was told about it by the late-great Nick Mattocks.. http://www.hiscoxcases.com/standardguitar_hiscox.htm#stdeg http://rowbinet.co.uk/2012/08/05/line-6-jtv59-hard-case-hiscox-std-eg/ http://www.musiquip.com/Hiscox_dealers.html http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hiscox-STD-EG-Guitar-Hardcase-similar/dp/B002BJ9XE2
  22. Trying to make the same decision myself! Basically, found out on Saturday that GtrCntr has the JTV59 on sale. Emailed Zzounds to price match, and they got back to me today with the price match, including the payment plan option. Here's what I've seen thus far in the other threads of this discussion of hard case option, at the moment leaning toward the Epiphone case or the Gator case. SKB 56 ($113 - $144) http://www.zzounds.com/item--DAVSKB56 Epiphone case for LP style guitars ($79 ) http://www.zzounds.com/item--EPILPCASE Gator GC-LPS ($99 ) http://www.zzounds.com/item--GATGCLPS Gibson Les Paul case ($199) http://www.zzounds.com/item--GIBASLPCASE Tweed Case for LP style ($74.00) http://www.guitarfetish.com/Tweed-Hard-Shell-Case-fits-Les-Paul-XV-500-XV-700-Real-Cloth-tweed_p_2197.html
  23. I ended up narrowing it down to the DT25 head+cab or the DT25 1x12 combo, and went with the DT25 1x12 combo. I hadn't considered a few subtle details, that ultimately led me to the decision I made. 1.) Closed back or open back? The head+cab is a CLOSED back extension cabinet. The combo is OPEN back. Also, the extension cabinet can be added to the 1x12 combo for more speakers / volume, etc, thus pairing the open back sound with the closed back sound. 2.) Speakers: if you want the DT50, the options get interesting with the 2x12, because it's two different types of speakers. [DT50 212:-1x12" Celestion® custom G12H90 speaker; -1x12" Celestion Vintage 30 speaker] 3.) as you mentioned, the weight! The DT25 1x12 is heavy, but not terrible. I remember my old band, the guy had a monster Egnater. Heaviest combo amp I've ever had to lift. I could barely pick this thing up. And I used to mess up my back lifting my bass gear. Heavy amps, if you have to lug them around yourself, can be brutal on your vertebrae. 4.) and in terms of the actual tubes, I don't know enough to describe why this matters (of if it does at all), but the DT50 uses EL34's and the DT25 uses EL84's 5.) design and look- the tone controls, volume, etc on the DT25 combo 1x12 are on the top of the amp. The DT50's and the head all have the controls on the front face. Personally, now that I have one DT25, I want another one! so I can run the stereo rig using the L6Link from the HD500.
  24. Looks like Guitar Center is having a JTV sale~ JTV69 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Line-6-Variax-JTV-69S-Electric-Guitar-with-Single-Coil-Pickups-108427279-i2744639.gc JTV59 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Line-6-JTV-59-Variax-Electric-Guitar-107187056-i1548451.gc
  25. Guitar Center has the JTV59 on sale right now, via their website. I just called my local store, and they say the stores will match pricing with their website. It's currently advertised new at $1,083.74. One point worth noting, is when ordering online or in store from GC, they will charge you tax no matter what - pickup in store or ship to your home or business. (other websites, Sweetwater, Zzounds, etc. don't charge tax) So, I just emailed Zzounds to inquire about price matching, and the option to do their '8 payment plan' on the price match. We'll see what they say! http://www.guitarcenter.com/Line-6-JTV-59-Variax-Electric-Guitar-107187056-i1548451.gc
