Thanks digi. I do the same with my cabs, I like using two as well, mainly curious if it saved dsp using the combo. And yes, I could tweak for days (and have).. finding things sound great in my newest rebuilds, just simpilfied..
-
And as a secondary question, if an amp/cab block allows you to switch cabs within the block, why use an seperate amp and cab block? Any idea which uses more dsp? I am using two cabs to get some of the spread I like, but am just running out of space and having to rethink alot of things running this way. Score one to running through a real amp, but I already hear a huge difference going straight, so I want to get the most I can out of it.

So I got my helix before Christmas, and decided to run into my existing cabs through my powerblocs. Loved it, then started recording last week and added cabs for my studio monitors. I am hooked! Sadly a lot of my previous patches had alot more amps and effects in each patch, some would go on or off per snapshot. Now I have to redo my patches removing alot of things for the sake of the cabs. I knkw usually less is more, but i am missing some of the nice layers from going straight to amp. Just a random gripe, but really enjoy the extra sound quality and cabs/IRs..

Strange, had the exact oppsite happen yesterday. I got helix right before Christmas, made about 40 patches running no cabs into dual powerblocks and real cabs. Started recording the other day, redid some of my patches with cabs through studio monitors, I may never go back!! I may run it both ways at next gig and see what really sounds best where it matters..

Thanks guys..kinda of what i expected, and was hoping to hear!

So I have been using my helix going into stereo power blocks, but I recently set up my recording gear and I'm finally enjoying the amp cabinets and interested in some IRs. My question is basically this, I am just using Studio reference monitors so how different should I sound when I go to a full PA? It would be nice not to have to Lug the whole rig on occasion! or even get to the point where I am using an FRFR rig full-time. I imagine I would get a wedge or something for stage reference, and then just run straight to the board? Just looking for some advice, mainly just how a good sound on 8 inch studio monitors should Translate out front on a full PA

Also try reducing the sag and hum on your amps. Especially for more gain type sounds. Tightens up the bottom end, turn it back up for bluesier sounds. Made a huge difference for me

Ahh ha!! Got one.. fish roe! Sushi anyone?

Seriously? Haha, didn't I make him eat that hat already? At this point, ban him, I guess he really loves that song! Or maybe he is actually Andy Summers, and is getting a lame high from this? Still reading? I nailed the tone and posted it for him, it's on you tube somewhere, who cares.. What other things are crunchy and orange?

Lost my snapshots, Update can't be worth this..
twystedriffs replied to twystedriffs's topic in Helix
Man I'm very sorry, I never did get mine back. Just had to rebuild and it was a long frustrating process. Granted it was cool but colors and a few new amp models here and there, but I would have rather done that leisurely. Next update I will be sending my set list to Line 6 or someone else that can open the files before I update to make sure the snapshots are saved. The guy that opened up for me said all the information was there except snapshots, and my understanding is it is supposed to save everything all together as there are no options for that. I am very paranoid about updating again in the future -
Exactly! One thing people dont realize about the police, they were kinda a jam band! Very rarely do you see two similar versions of the same song live. I have seen message done fast and heavy, slower and cleaner, with keys, alot of improv. And his tone is always vastly different from the recorded version. The only reason I tried to nail these tones closely was as a tribute band, people expect it. The more you watch Andy live, the more you realize how much he changes things. I learned it this way with the slide, it's just easier to play consistantly live for me. Every breath you take is the finger killer! I am usually more of a harder rock player, but learning police songs have given me huge appreciation for Andy's style and ability. We have taken alot of ideas from their live concerts, the jam riff at the end of world is running down they do in Tokyo for example. Not on the album, but gives the whole song more dynamics live. So we stole that. Whether the tone or the song itself, as long as the main feel is there, you should have a little freedom around the edges..

Hey Bradlake. I dont mind sharing, keep in mind I play through amps, so you will have to add your own cabs or IR's. I am at work currently, but check back later! Thanks, glad you enjoy it

Debris..dang voice texting..

Like I said, I could have tweaked it to perfection, but this is the tone I use live, so it probably has a little more dirt to it. But you can tell its very close, I didn't feel a need to spend much time with it, but hopefully you can admit it can be done! Who you jivin with that cosmic debrit?
-
Well, if he is gone, than we can talk normally. And thanks, I honestly expected to come in and tweak a little, but I spent enough time on it originally, it sounded pretty close as it was. Doing a Police tribute I try to get a little closer than I would on just regular covers. So I have about 15 police presets, all mine, all pretty close. Wish yall could hear my drummer, he kills it, it amazes me nonstop.. ill try to find a clip of us live.. that being said, this was a very tuff sound, but I had it good on X3live, helix is even better!

Just for fun..

Also, Frank Zappa was so incredible. Dweezil's Zappa plays Zappa was quite impressive for those of us that never saw Frank live. I wish Frank, Stu Copeland, and Les Claypool had made an album somehow..

Here is a link to a quick video I did this morning. Not going to apologize for using a cell phone in the floor, or the fact I am not playing my tele. I am using my custom epi with the coil split. Obviously the original video of Andy's track has a harmony overdub. But you can tell my tone is pretty dang close. I was going to tweak to further duplicate, but no real need too, this should prove the helix is more than capable of this sound. If I used my tele and tracked a few layers, you wouldnt be able to tell the difference in a blind test would be my guess.. but yall tell me? Eat a hat or no?
-
Hey yall, have a couple cell phone videos I am trying to post on here. Any one no a good app to convert to a format that will work on here?
-
Thanks for the info yall!
-
Yeah, Im not trying to prove anything to anyone, dont need too, I know my rig sounds good on Police material. But I promised a few clips so anyone reading this now silly thread can see that Helix is plenty capable of these tones..
-
I have not set my rig up from last gig yet, I will post a few clips asap..
-
, yeah probably so. Like I said some things are pretty dang close, some of them I made a little more dirty for playing live, and some of them I kind of created on my own. Listen to them do Invisible Sun in Tokyo. Played in a different key, and he uses a reverse delay instead of keyboard in the song. I thought that was kind of cool and made my own version of it and it works great. Using the send harmonizer on behind my camel, etc. The point I was originally trying to make was that the helix can mimic Motors things out there pretty closely. Message in a Bottle is a cool sound, I Run 1 clean with the chorus and one dirty or side blend and pan them and it sounds amazing through my live rig. A little dirtier than what he posted but if I cleaned it up a bit I have no doubt if you played them in a blind test it would be tough to tell a difference.

You mean call the police? I thought that is what we were doing
