  1. HAHA!! You are always one step ahead of me!!! That is exactly what I'm going through right now! I'm trying to figure out which way I want to go that enhances what I have and where I want to take it. By all means I am fully considering the Helix Floor as an option and selling the HX Stomp XL. If I go that direction, it seems to me that I would not use my amp (Vox or Mesa) in the 4CM and just run the sound out to my studio monitors. I guess I can do both.... regardless, the Floor is a possibility. Alternately, I can go with a Catalyst/Stomp XL option. To further complicate things it seems like all of my options to keep the Stomp have me also adding the TC Electronic Plethora X3 to the mix. I'm currently building dual amp presets that use up all the DSP and I'm offloading the time based effects to my M9. I'd rather get a Plethora X3 and use the Stomp to controll the X3 via MIDI. Side note, it's crazy that the M9 is STILL relevant in 2022 via MIDI in 2022! Anyway, I kinda like the Helix Floor or Stomp XL+Plethora option over the Catalyst just because it's less space on my floor and wall. Plus my wife notices new amps, she doesn't notice new pedals, although she'd pick up on a new Floor for sure!!
  2. Alright others in this forum have helped me nail down a few details about the Catalyst amp and Stomp integration, but here are a few questions/use cases I'd like to understand better. 1. Can the Catalyst/Stomp system be configured to output the sound to the internal speaker AND to studio monitors at the same time? What I'd like to do is have that amp-in-the-room vibe along with the stereo effect. Can this be done? If so can you explain at a high level? 2. Is a traditional 4CM the preferred way to integrate the two units? To capture the full benefits of the Stomp and signal chain management, is the 4CM the way to get that done or is there a more streamlined way? 3. To save on DSP is it possible to use the Catalyst to generate the amp tone (selected amp model), but also use the Stomp to enable a different amp model and switch back and forth? That is, can I set up a patch where I use the Catalyst "Chime" amp tone, then hit a switch that turns the Chime off and the Stomp Cartographer amp model on? In this case the Stomp would only be used for one amp, yet two amps would be available. Huge thanks to you guys who can help me with this!
  3. Hi all, need some help. I currently have my Stomp XL running out of the headphone jack into a stereo splitter and into a pair of Mackie MR5 studio monitors. I also have a couple of pedals in the loop but I tend not to use them a ton. The sound I get is really pretty good, especially on clean and cleanish amp models. I just got back from one of the big guitar stores and tried out the Catalyst 60, 100 and 200. Without having either of those amps side by side in my room with monitors, it's hard to say which sounds better. Anyone with experience using both systems in the same room (Stomp into monitors vs a Catalyst)? I can say this, the dirtier the amp, the less convincing it is with a Stomp. I find that to be true even when the Stomp is connected to a real amp (Vox AC30 or Mesa Boogie Express using the 4CM) Anyone out there can offer up your wisdom here? All I really want the Stomp+monitors setup to do it be a quieter version of a tube amp, add stereo and it sound really good and convincing. For clean tones I think I'm done. But will I gain anything by getting a Catalyst 100 (I liked that one a lot). I think I need to sell my Boogie and make room!!
  4. I think I found my solution. Ventoux!!! I pretty much can get all the way from super clean to reasonably fat distortion without any help.
  5. Yes I'm aware of that. The question is, how can you achieve a similar effect with the Stomp? Is it only possible using a single clean amp and adding distortion pedals to it. Maybe there's one model out there that by itself can go from super clean to full on Plexi or Boogie or something else...

  7. Hi. I figure it is what it is, but maybe there's a way.... I'm trying to set up a dual amp patch to simulate something like my Mesa Boogie or really any two-channel tube amp with a clean and dirty channel. So my patch would start with a compressor, then a clean amp (say the US Princess) then the dirty amp (take your pick), then a cab....now at this point I'm already pretty low on DSP and all I can add is a reverb OR delay OR a modulation. Is this just a limitation of the Stomp or is there a way to achieve this dual amp thing a different way and enable additional effects. I'm trying to enable stereo, but that's probably just a pipe dream. The only way I can find to get the "dual amp" thing is with a single amp and a pretty aggressive distortion pedal like a Rat. This works, but I was trying this with only amp models. Also, would the Helix Floor or LT have enough DSP to do this? Thanks!!!
  8. HOLY CRAP!! Why didn't you guys tell me how freaken cool stereo is!! All this time I've had my monitors collecting dust and I'm been dinking around with the 4CM when I could have been in the promised land all this time!!!
  9. Hi all, I just started using my HX Stomp XL with monitors and the stereo thing has happened!! Question... Do ALL blocks need to be stereo blocks in order for the patch to work in stereo OR can you get away with some being stereo and others being mono? If you can mix, it seems to me that the Boost/Overdrive can be mono and the modulation, delay and reverb ought to be stereo, but does mixing them detract from the stereo sound at all? Thank you for the help!
  10. hx stomp: headphones output connect to amp

You recently wrote in about this post. I have a question for you about your setup. Can you help?

I currently use a Vox AC30 with the HX Stomp XL connected via 4CM. I would however really like to be able to play at lower volume and also not use my tubes just to mess around. So recently I've been thinking about getting a small modeling amp like the Catalyst.

Ok I also have a dusty pair of studio monitors. They sound pretty good but don't use them (yet/much). I have hooked them up to the HX Stomp outputs in the past just to do it, but they are not ever used this way. Then I got to thinking, could I simply connect the monitors to the headphone output? In my case I'd need a splitter cable out of the HX Stomp and I think I have one somewhere.

It seems like you do this and it works well. Is that right? Any tips? If this were to work, I could avoid getting a new amp and just use the Stomp as my modeling practice amp, right?

    Many thanks!

    Adam

A headphone output is nearly the same as a line output. Since the impedance of the monitors is generally 10K for input, this works just as well and even better in some cases than a line output.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I did not see this until now. All the best!

  11. Can someone with experience using the Eventide H9 and Helix describe the quality of the effects options? I have to admit, I'm not enamored with the Helix modulations or delays. They are not bad by any means and totally usable, but is the grass greener on the Eventide side? From what I've gathered from YouTube videos is the H9 is very well regarded and might just be the top tire unit for effects. But, then there's the reality of what you have in front of you is good enough. I do have a Helix (Stomp XL). So, thoughts from experience? Will the H9 inspire me? Does the H9 offer a sound pallet that just bets out the Helix? Maybe I need both? I tend to use a fair bit of modulation (chorus, univibe, trem, phaser, flanger). As for delay, most of what I use is simple delay to fill out the sound. Curious what you have to say.
  12. Ok. That makes a lot of sense. Now I need to try moving the Gain block around. Thank you for the clarification! Very helpful.
  13. codamedia, Your tricks and suggestions are excellent!! I tested out the Gain block. But now I have a question for you, but really anyone can probably answer this. When I added the Gain block, I dialed down the gain so that the volume of the overall sound was pretty close to the volume without the Boost pedal on (Kinky Boost). So the question is, how is using a Gain block different or better than adjusting the Output levels? So in my case, really any AC30 Vox user, the volume difference between the Normal and Top Boost channel is pretty significant. It's a real pain. But the Helix has a great way of dealing with that. I also use a Mesa Boogie Switch-Track as my channel changer (A/B/Y) and it is MIDI capable. So when I change Snapshots, I can have say SS 1 for the Normal channel and SS 2 for the Top Boost. I then adjust the Normal SS1 output level to +8db and SS2 Top Boost to -5db. That keeps the volume about even when switching channels. Ok back to your Gain block trick....how is using a Gain block different than using the output level adjustment I'm doing? Is there a difference? Is one better than the other in anyway? Pros Cons? Thank you!!
  14. Thank you! That's an interesting approach, I will try that adding the gain block. Actually the gain block might be very helpful to help smooth out the volume bumb when switching from the normal to TB channel. I actually have a TC Spark Booster pedal. It's very good and very flexible but it does color the sound slightly towards the Marshall side.... I'll try what you suggested.
  15. Hi. Anyone with Vox amp experience using the 4CM, can you suggest overdrive models that marry up well with the Vox AC30. There are so many models to choose, I get confused....can anyone offer a good starting point? I use both the Normal and TB channels. Thanks for your opinions!
  16. I have a problem with FS3. Same thing. Line 6 agreed to fix it, but I have not sent back yet.
  17. Ok that make sense to me and I don't have the Helix Floor. Of course the Stomp works very much the same way and I can follow your setup. It would be great to know for sure...but this is very helpful! Thank you.
  18. SO YES!! But the follow up question is, after setting the output to "Multi", can you within the Snapshots turn a specific output source on or off? So can you get it to work like this.... Enable Multi output connect the output cable to the Normal channel on the amp connect the XLR output cable to the Top Boost channel on the amp (with 1/4" adaptor of course) In Snapshot 1, turn the L Main output ON and the XLR output OFF In Snapshot 2, turn the Main L output OFF and the XLR output ON In Snapshot 3, turn both outputs ON Is that feasible?
  19. Thank you for the reply. I have been trying to find a way to split the output signal into two identical paths but have the ability to switch from one to the other. Basically I just said...I need an A/B/Y switch. But my post wasn't really all about that, it was simply, why can I not get the output path to look like the output path shown in the manual?
  20. I think this is more of a question for Helix Floor users, but anyway.... Can the Helix L/Mono output signal be duplicated and routed to other available outputs such as the Left XLR or even one of the available Effects Loops? Effectively, what I'm trying to understand is this: can the Helix internally act as an A/B/Y switch? I need to take the Helix L/Mono Output, duplicate that signal and then select which of those signals gets sent to the Vox AC30 inputs. This is easy with an external A/B/Y switch, but, if the Floor could take the 1/4" L/Mono signal and ALSO have that same signal coming out of the Left XLR, using a Snapshot I'm sure I could turn on/off the outputs (I assume you can do that...). In this case I'd route my L/Mono to the Normal channel on the Vox amp and the Helix XLR (w/1/4 adapter) or Effects Send to the Top Boost channel. Anyone know if this can be done?
  21. This is not exactly what I'm doing. Let me explain more. Immediately out of the Input (so the very first thing that happens) is a Split-Y. I get that by adding an LA Comp and moving it to Path B. So for Path A, my first block is the FX Loop L, then an Overdrive block then a Noise Gate block. And for Path B, I have a LA Comp and an EQ 10-band block. I then move my Mixer right after the 10-band EQ. After the Mixer I have a Stereo modulation, stereo Delay and Stereo Reverb Ok, back the the Split-Y. I pan the Path A hard left and the Path B, hard right. I do the same with the Mixer. That's a set it-and forget it kinda think. I don't touch those anymore. Now move over to the Output section. I pan Path A hard left and Pan Path B hard right. Then I assign the Pan to Footswitch Latch. I have it on Footswitch 1. But this can be assigned to a Snapshot if you want. So the FS1 now toggles between the two amps. I'm thinking an even better way to do this is with Snapshots because then I can have: SS #11 = Amp 1 SS #2 = Amp 2 SS #3 = both (Output set to Center). That might be fun! I hope this makes sense. If needed I guess I can find a way to export it and upload it for you.
  22. I have to correct my initial post. Unfortunately, I'm a little wrong about things, but maybe some smart dude out there an explain how to do it.... I mentioned that I had a mod, delay and reverb block at the end and those are shared. The weird thing is, as soon as any one of those blocks are activated, the entire signal becomes blended. I don't really understand why as the Split-Y is panned, and the mixer is panned and the output is panned, but that's what happens. The signals are split and it's perfect right up to the point I turn on a block after the mixer. So, to work around that, each Path needs its own mod, delay and reverb block. I'm finding I'm running out of blocks now. I'll keep playing with it. But if anyone knows how to do this and share blocks, ease do tell!!! EDIT: I went back and changed the three blocks AFTER the Mixer to Stereo blocks and everything works as hoped. So I'm back to being good :)
  23. Yes and no. First yes. Yeah you can do this with a A/B/Y box and even do it post Stomp. But....here's the no.... No because, while the A/B/Y box might control the signal, it will not control the Stomp preset or Snapshot, unless.... If the A/B/Y box was also MIDI controllable, then Yes to your question in full. But, for the cost of an ML-5 and a Stomp, gotta question not just getting a Helix LT or Floor, but that another story.
