Wtf Is Going On With My Variax And Workbench?
jpmull replied to Geamala's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Here are a couple of things I've found useful: I always use monkey to update everything else first, for example, drivers, workbench, edit, etc. Then do the firmware. Try unplugging all other USB devices temporarily. Try using different USB ports. Try different USB cables. Always use a FULL battery with a VDI and a 1/4 inch plugged in while updating firmware with the dongle. I've been there, it is frustrating and scary - I bricked my first JTV59. I wish this could be a more reliable and safe thing. -

Also, what about the add-on model update packs, do those transfer over, or are they out of date at this point? Collector Classics FX Junkie Metal Shop POD Farm 2 Power Pack

Hi, Sorry for the probably remedial post, but I've been searching for good info without much luck. I'm thinking of upgrading my old POD X3 Live to an HD500X. I'm trying to figure out if the tones I've already created on the POD X3 Live will be usable on the HD500X. Has anyone been able to do this? Thanks, JP

My wish: I hope they take the Bluetooth integration and add it to the POD line. Then they could have an app on a mobile device that would allow for creating, editing, and backing up of tones. Create a tone on the mobile device and send it immediately to the POD. Hell, why not integrate the HD Workshop into it as well for the JTV owners. Use a mobile device to edit your pickup config and send it to the guitar through the POD via Bluetooth. Use the ToneMatch stuff too, search for a song and send not only the patch, but a guitar model and configuration to the POD and JTV. Tweak the patch using the mobile device and then save it to a patch location. Create set lists on the mobile device that contain POD patches and JTV models. For gigging guys and pros, this would allow you to backup all of your tones and set lists. When playing from a set list, tap a song on the mobile device and the patches load. If your POD dies because beer gets dumped in it, drop by the local guitar center for a new one, connect to it via Bluetooth and send all of your backed up tones/patches/models/set lists etc. to it and you are good to go. You could have different versions of your patches saved for different playing situations, e.g. If you are playing through a PA, stage amp, or going direct for recording.

So, do you think the Amplifi's new flat response stereo speakers will sound good with the JTV's acoustic models? Any other thoughts? I was a little disappointed in no vdi connection to power the JTV. This paired with a pod is a little overkill as far as effects go, but it's nice to plug in one cable and play as welll. I would probably use the Bluetooth for practicing, but last time I had a 50 watt amp, I sold it because it was too damn loud to practice with. I was surprised to see this as a 150 watt amp!

Advice On Choosing A Jtv Model?
jpmull replied to mccarticus's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Well, I have a 59 and like it a lot. I know what you are saying about the switch. The remaining two switch positions are accessible, but require you to depress the tuning knob to access them. On the 69, you have all 5 positions available. Keep in mind though that when paired with the HD pods, you can always switch models via the patch on the pod. Additionally, you can move models around using Workbench. I would think about what you are playing - do you ever use all 5 positions on the Strat in the same song? How often? Would it suffice to move the models around so you had neck, second, and bridge or neck, fourth and bridge positions available on the three way switch? My other advice would be to play them if possible. Another idea if you like the 69: can you live with blocking the trem or tightening the springs so that it lays flat? (Not sure what that would do to the setup, but I used to do it on my MIM Strat when I had it.) -
New Jtv89 Not Recognized
jpmull replied to bmcoonan's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Here is a list of tips I put together from various posts on the forum. I'm doing this from memory, so, I don't remember who originally posted each of these suggestions. Things to check/try: Update Line 6 Monkey and drivers first. Try downloading the firmware file, and then select upgrade from file and browse to the file you downloaded. Battery in, fully charged connect via variax interface, not a POD Volume at 10 with 1/4 inch jack plugged in Try a different USB port (on my mac, I use the one furthest away from where my keyboard is plugged in) Don't use the keyboard USB Ports. Try a different USB cable Try using a standard ethernet cable in place of the VDI cable. Crossover cables do not work. Have the modeling "off" Try repeatedly updating the firmware. -
Make sure to use Line 6 Monkey to do all software updates for Monkey itself and the USB drivers. Make sure you have a guitar cable in your 1/4 inch jack and turn your volume up. Otherwise, your guitar may be in sleep mode. Inserting the cable and turning the volume up turns the guitar "on". Do not use any POD to connect to Workbench, use the interface. Try using different USB cables and try using a regular ethernet cable in place of your VDI cable. You can also try different combinations of USB ports on the MBP. Just in case, make sure your MBP is plugged in, not just on battery and make sure your JTV has a fully charged battery as well. Good Luck

Who Has A Completely Working Jtv Guitar?
jpmull replied to spmartin's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I went through two 59's from two different Guitar Centers before getting one that worked. First one got bricked doing an update. Second one had a bad model selector switch. Line 6 Support would have taken them in for repair, but I'm on the East Coast and didn't want to wait since I had traded my guitar for the JTV. If you like the way yours plays and looks, maybe it's worth the repair time. I should have had the first one repaired. It was a Cherryburst that had a great book matched flame to the top. None of the others I looked at came close and I ended up with a black one. I have not had the alt tuning issue and have not altered the tuning options in wb. -
Hi, I though this might be interesting to hear from other JTV owners: What is your Signature Tune for your favorite model? In other words, what song do you think captures the iconic sound of the model? For example: I like the SPANK model a lot and I love how Robert Cray's "Strong Persuader" sounds it. For the T-Model, I have had a blast playing in open G. Either the Stone's "Brown Sugar" or Black Crowes. For acoustics, I like the J-200 tuned to Drop D Go to songs are James Taylor's "Millworker" or John Hiatt's "Icy Blue Heart" What is your Signature Tune? jp

Creating Models From Scratch
jpmull replied to sudiptasingh's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Maybe they could add functionality similar to the Kemper Profiling amp? In my opinion, I have more than enough options to play with, given the original models and the flexibility Workbemch offers. I would rather spend time learning how to play better than have a zillion options to tweak or sort through a million models created by other users. Not that it's not fun to experiment, but I only have so much time in a day! -
I found this great YouTube lesson by Don Felder of The Eagles. It's in a couple of parts, but he walks you through how to play "Hotel California", including the fantastic outro solo. I know some have a "No Hotel California Rule", but I that's like telling me I can't play "Brown Sugar" while in Open G! There are a couple of other vids of Don on YouTube playing the song live with a monstrous double-neck SG, but for those of us with a JTV, It's far easier to switch between 12 and 6 strings! Have fun! 2.0 Bricked Guitar Update From Chuckewheat
jpmull replied to chuckewheat's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Chucklewheat, Glad you are up and running. I had a similar issue with the first two JTV 59's. I got them at Guitar Center. The first unit shipped with two interfaces. Unfortunately, I picked the wrong one and it got bricked. The second one failed as well. It alao came with two interfaces. So, after returning two Cherrybursts, I now have a functioning Black one running 2.0. Line 6 support was willing to do a return and repair them, but swapping them at Guitar Center was far quicker. I marked the working interface after I read your comment! -

Another Jtv59 Bites The Dust.
jpmull replied to jpmull's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Yes, I did, thanks for the suggestion. The second two guitars I got both came with two workbench interfaces brand new wrapped in a bag. Both accessory boxes were sealed, so, they came from Line 6 that way. I think that's strange. If there is a reliability or quality issue, you would think it would be cheaper to fix the issues rather than ship two interfaces in case one is bad! Maybe I'm missing the reason for the second one? My newest JTV59 seems to be working, and I've held off updating if for now. -

I got a replacement from Guitar Center on Wednesday. They didn't have a nice Cherryburst, so I decided to go for the Black. Got it home and it seems to be fine, so far. Have not had the guts to update the firmware because I'm afraid to brick another one! Plays really nice and sounds great through my POD X3 Live.
