Variax Vs. Axe Fx Pitch Shift?
Crusty_Old_Rocker replied to rlintz's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I can't help you as far as the Axe FX goes or the style of music you play. There are some real differences with the modelled guitars and using native magnetic pickups that relate to the modelling being applied to the signal that comes from piezo pickups in the bridge. However, as for latency, if it's there, I can't detect it and if you were to do the pitch shift via a blend of the original tuning via the magnetic pickups and the harmony tuning via the modelling, I would guess that would overcome any perceived shortcomings or limitations of the modelled tones coming from the piezo pickups. The best thing to do would be to find someone with a JTV89 and invite them over to try it out with your setup. Cheers, Crusty -
Is It Possible?
Crusty_Old_Rocker replied to cw0401's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
As others have pointed out the Variax offers faster and more versatile tuning capabilities than the robot tuning. Also keep in mind that the robo tuning will ruin strings through metal fatigue, will mess up the action of the guitar and will warp the neck of the guitar over time. Cheers, Crusty -
Dead Fret
Crusty_Old_Rocker replied to partytrain's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Proper neck relief should fix it assuming the frets were properly dressed. Check the neck relief and adjust the truss rod if necessary. If you're not well versed with such adjustments, take it to a qualified guitar tech for a setup. Cheers, Crusty -
Try taking it somewhere else and plug it in. Try a few different locations because this will let you know if it's the amp or the environment it's that's creating the problem. You may just need a power filter. Cheers, Crusty

Keep in mind that 10 Watts of class A can be louder than 25 Watts in class A/B. Cheers, Crusty

Just imagine what the robot tuning does to the neck relief and action of the guitar as the overall string tension changes. Cheers, Crusty -
Version 2.0 Hd Update
Crusty_Old_Rocker replied to geebake's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
+1 I had several incomplete updates that didn't fully install the firmware using the WB interface. I achieved successful updates using the POD HD Pro. Although you can't use the POD with Workbench HD you can use it to install the update. I'd give that a go. Cheers, Crusty -
Hd500 As Dt25 Controller Without Amp Modeling
Crusty_Old_Rocker replied to rnorth's topic in DT50 / DT25
The easiest way to put this is that there is no such thing as a DT amp tone. It has no tone of it's own. It has an analogue power amp that has many characteristics that can be changed but all of the tone stacks (in the pre amp) all come from modelled amps. You can use MIDI and the HD500 as a MIDI controller to do what you want. But that's much more difficult than building a patch, copying it and then altering the copies to give you the changes in the power amp configurations. But you need ro be aware that some of those changes will be heard because they involve physically switching circuits using relays in the amp. The best way to manage this is by using multiple DT amps and switch from one to another using the L6LINK. Cheers, Crusty -
Yep, if you're going to win something it doesn't get much cooler than that. Congrats! Cheers, Crusty

Has anyone checked the downloads page in the past 30 minutes? Anyone at all? :D http://line6.com/news/general/1433 Cheers, Crusty -
Space is right. The clean tones using a class A/B power amp aren't loud enough with the DT25 to get a Strat to really quack. Two heads are better than one when you need to get spanky. Cheers, Crusty

Just imagine what those robotuners will do to an expensive set in neck over time. I prefer instant alt tuning on the fly without warping the neck and causing metal fatigue in the strings. Cheers, Crusty -

Quick, get back there now and tap F5. :p -

Just go to to the JTV product page and keep tapping the F5 key on your keyboard. :D Cheers, Crusty -
What's really cool is that if you use a JTV guitar you can fade between a modelled acoustic guitar through one FX path and the electric (magnetic pickups) through the other path. I have a Lola patch that I move from clean dobro to overdriven electric (Vox AC30 amp model) via the expression pedal. Cheers, Crusty

When you explore what you can do with deep editing of the power amp and cab parameters, there are more tonal possibilities with the POD HD than with the X3. Cheers, Crusty

Really, if you're not going to be taking advantage of the matching power amp to preamp capabilities of the DT amps then the next best option is to use the full amp modelling in the HD500 into a FRFR amplified speaker. Running pre amps from the HD500 into the power amp of a guitar amp only offers a single type of power amp for the 30 different preamps, this won't sound right. If you try getting a Fender Twin sound using a VOX AC30, it just won't sound right, just like putting a VOX AC30 preamp into a Fender Deluxe power amp. I have tried all different amplifications with the full range of POD products and when it comes to getting the full amp and cab models sounding right, you're better off using a PA speaker. The exception to this came about with the POD HD because the best result comes from the DT amps if you choose to use the modelled preamps in the POD HD with the valve power amp from the DT amps. So, if you don't want to go down the DT amp path, go with a good FRFR solution. Cheers, Crusty
