    Helix Cab vs IR

This could be the case. I almost never play high gain. Cranked Plexi with drive pedal in front is about as far as I go, which may explain why I never got the IR magic :)

    Helix Cab vs IR

I had a request on the FB group to do a comparison of IR vs Helix cabs. I'm not here to try and say one is better than the other or suggest what anyone should use, as there are people here on this forum that enjoy both. I just wanted to do a quick A/B. Definitely not trying to knock IR's. For this test I used a Vox Fawn normal channel and compared the stock 2x12 Silver Bell vs a Redwirez 2x12 silver, both with 121 mic 1" off the grill. To my ears they were pretty close. I know that comparing one Helix cab to one IR is VERY far from an exhaustive comparison, which wasn't my intent. My conclusion with THIS test is that the cabs were very similar. Which is to say IR's aren't always superior so whichever one makes you the happiest, go for it. Just trust your ears :)
  3. The more I think about it, with that being a merge point I am wrong about one IR passing through the other. That's what I get for answering questions first thing in the morning and without checking it on the device first :)
  4. Go for it! :)
  5. I don't have my Helix in front of me, but Just looking at the pic it seems like in the first image the 1st IR would end up going through the 2nd IR and getting affected tonally by it because they merge back into the same path. In the 2nd image both IR's maintain their own discrete path and wouldn't affect one another. The 2nd could be louder because you have 2 separate outputs vs one, or that when you merge the two and one IR goes into another you are getting some phase cancellation. Without experimenting with this I'm not sure exactly what the case is. As far as the phasing on the first and second example maybe you aren't hearing any difference in the 2nd because the channels are discrete? Like I said, I'd have to setup a patch and play around with it to give you exact answers, but I'm just thinking about it off the top of my head. As far as the reverb, in the 2nd example you could send both outputs to 2A and then put a mono reverb on 2A that would affect both of them. They would basically merge at 2A into one path. Hope this is helpful, and that my answers are right :)
  6. I'm glad that was helpful! Yes, if you put the cabs in a separate path and then assign that path to a different physical output it should be able to do exactly what you need.
  7. You're very welcome!
  8. This info will probably be 101 type stuff for a lot of regulars on this forum in particular, but I had gotten some questions on my other patch videos about dual paths and stereo setups. So I made a video building a patch showing how to do this. If anyone has any questions about setting up dual paths this might be helpful.
  9. He said that he has the 10" version.
  10. A friend of mine just bought a pair of the TS2 series, 12" I think but maybe the 10", and he LOVES them. He had tried one of the EV monitors and it was very boomy and the bass frequencies were extremely hyped. I thought it could have been the way he had his AX8 setup, but I played my Helix through the EV and didn't like it at all. He returned that and basically for the price of the EV he got a pair of the Alto's and is so much happier with them.
  11. I have never had the chance to play the L2M, so I can't say personally. I've heard nothing but good from the Line 6 Stagesource speaker series, so I'm sure they're great. To me I just could justify (afford) the difference in the cost for speakers given that a lot of the time when I play I use whatever the house system is. If I played full time and always brought my own sound I'd have given the Line 6 speakers a closer look. Maybe someone on here who's tried them both could comment?
  12. Coming from the GT8 you're going to love either the Helix or the Ax8. Personally I prefer the Helix. I have a friend with the AX8 and we've spent some time comparing them. Everyone has their own opinion, but I take the Helix all day long. It just fits my particular needs really well. Love the UI and the tones are great. Has way more routing flexibility and it's so much easier to interact with. In all honesty I don't feel like it gives up a thing in terms of tone. I use an Alto TS110A and love it. I just posted a thread from a gig I did last week using the Alto and that's what you hear in the recording: http://line6.com/support/topic/20242-helix-and-alto-ts110a/ I don't want to down the AX8, because obviously it's an awesome unit. I'm sure you'd be happy with either one, but I'm just totally sold on Helix after using it for this last several weeks that I can't recommend it enough. Just my .02
  13. This was the reason I switched to the Matchless Jump amp model.... I haven't played the real thing, but it's possible that it's in there. Line 6 talks about modelling amps "warts and all".
  14. Love to check out the patches if you'd be willing to share them!
  15. Thanks man!! The longer I play the more I realize how much of the sound comes from the right hand technique. I'm amazed when I watch players like Sean Halley do demos for Line 6, his right hand is incredible!! Guys like him make me realize how much farther I have to go :P I think the Alto's are an absolute steal considering what they sell for.
  16. Thanks so much!! I'm glad you enjoyed my playing! The Alto is hard to beat for the money :)
  17. I know the question of which FRFR speaker comes up a lot. I did a gig Friday with my own equipment and used my Alto TS110A as the main. It was a small outdoor event and it had plenty of output. The other videos I've shared have always been using the house PA at other places, so I wanted to post to give an idea of what the Alto sounds like. To me it's a great bang for the buck. This was recorded from a camera mic, but a decent one, so it gives a good feel for how the speaker comes across to the audience or in the room. https://youtu.be/XYnnVSr5xmQ
  18. That's awesome, thanks! You can also check out my personal channel here if you haven't already seen it: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO9JwLO8HgC91MxohYw1Paw/videos
  19. Did another open mic night with Helix and Variax and it was a lot of fun. I'm soooo in love with this setup :) Keep in mind that this is the camera mic that's picking up the audio, the guy filming was sitting where he was getting some monitor bleed (which was overly bright), and it was the house PA with no time to adjust for EQ. I say all that because sometimes I've had folks (on other forums of course :D) pick apart the tone on some of these videos. Hope you enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Fd0qeMpSPo
  20. Thanks, I'll check that out!
  21. My expression pedal has developed a squeak to it when rocking it back and forth. I've tried adjusting the tension so it isn't that. What type of lubricant should I use and where physically on the pedal should I use it? I don't want to spray any lubricant in a spot that could cause any issues, if that's even possible. I haven't opened up the case, so I don't know how the expression pedal is connected to the circuit board. Just want to get rid of the squeak safely :) Thanks!
  22. That's a good point about Billy Gibbons. I have been accused of looking like Derek Trucks. No one has ever accused me of playing like him though :)
  23. Thanks man! No, that patch was one of mine. Here it is if anyone is interested: http://line6.com/customtone/tone/1950957/ I've been making patches since the AxSys 212 days and that's part of the fun for me. I have to say Helix makes it so simple to get good tone right out of the gate. I spent HOURS getting my HD500X patch just the way I wanted it. I eventually did, but with Helix it took about 5 minutes to get the basic tone. Still spent a bit of time getting all the effects and routing setup the way I wanted. Like I said though, that's part of the fun :)
  24. Thanks man! There are times I'll be practicing and get very frustrated when I have to stop and let me hand rest. For the most part though it isn't a huge problem. I just have to focus on keeping the muscles in my left hand from tensing up. Just one of those things....
