davidicus
hi there! i run Line 6 Monkey and can choose either Variax USB Interface or Tyler Variax devices. both open, both report being up to date. both lights are green on the interface. when i run Workbench, it errors "Could not connect to the Tyler Variax. Please check all MIDI and power connections and click 'Refresh' in the tone locker. if i press Configure, the MIDI devices window shows up with No Device Detected displayed in the list. no amount of plugging, unplugging, Refreshing, powering on or off is working. it HAS connected properly in the past, but i've only had this a few days. is there some magic order everything needs to be connected and powered? is there a secret MIDI configuration i should make somewhere? frustrating!Windows 7 laptop, JTV-
thorneven
Sanity check... The setup is thus: Variax USB box connected to USB on computer, other side of USB box connected to Variax via VDI cable, 1/4" guitar plug plugged into Variax, a charged battery in Variax, and the correct Java version (1.6 and 1.7 should work - I use 1.6 update 20 and 1.7 update 25) required by Workbench. When connected correctly you will have a green light on the Variax side of the Variax USB box. In Workbench ensure you can select the Variax USB interface. if it's not selectable, something is wrong with your connections. Could be a bad USB cable, bad VDI cable, a damaged Variax USB box, or even bad Windows USB drivers or USB port. Also it seems your best off by having version 1.9 of the Variax firmware installed.
BigChas52
Make sure you have a cable plugged in to the 1/4" jack on the guitar, otherwise it will not power up and will not be seen.
TheRealZap
i don't think that this is it... because the workbench interface has a red light when its not powered on... he said both sides were green.... i would however try another network cable... the included cable on my workbench hardware, had an issue right out of the box... a new standard cat5 cable fixed me right up. Make sure you have a cable plugged in to the 1/4" jack on the guitar, otherwise it will not power up and will not be seen.
lilguitar
I will say that I have had this same problem over the past few days with my JTV89F...both lights are green, but giving me the same MIDI message. I did get Workbench to come up once (can't remember how), but the error message screen was still there (I just drug it out of the way). Workaround more than a fix and still don't understand why?? TheRealZap
one thing to look at is that workbench requires java... it might be worthwhile to uninstall workbench and all versions of java, then reinstall workbench and allow it to install it's desired version of java. (might not work if you're using a mac)
davidicus
thanks all! yeah, two green lights, so no connection or power issues, and fresh install and updates, so workbench, monkey, and java all current. it *was* possible to circumvent the error to get to workbench, but not to reach the guitar's patches. BUT i just got it to work. only thing i can think of is that Automap may have changed? my Novation keyboard uses it to communicate controller data with my software. no idea how to handle this if Novation and Line 6 data don't get along for some reason :/ (have fiddled with Automap since having the problem, but didn't think i'd changed any settings; also, i'm not trying to use the keyboard and guitar concurrently or anything like that). tscoolberth
Does the battery need to be near 100% charged for all this to work? The software says something about an xps power supply but I guess those are no longer sold. -tsc
guilhordas
Hi guys, one question, how do I save definitely in jtv one alteration that I do in the workbench? I think it saved, then close the program, but when I open again the workbench I notice that the change does not saved Thanks
efoltz
I am running a Macbook pro, JTV 69 with variax usb interface. Line 6 monkey says the guitar and interface are connected, but it cannot determine what firmware is loaded. when i try to update the firmware (for the variax usb) a message comes up telling me to check the connections. the connections are all good - green lights at both ends. I try to run HD Workbench; the JTV IS connected, the controls on the guitar even change the guitars in Workbench, but I get no sound. Can anyone help me with this problem? By the way, I used the old Workbench and the sound worked on it!
TheRealZap
I've always ran the 1/4" to the pod when using the interface... i don't think that the interface does sound... i suppose i could be wrong, seeing as i've never tried to use it like that...
efoltz
Thanks Uber Guru! Sometimes you can stare into all this gadgetry and forget where you are altogether. Everything is now working as it should :-)
