wayneblue
Can someone pls provide the steps, to how you get this dang vocoder to work? Also, can you engage and disengage, like using on LIVIN ON A PRAYER??
pianoguyy
Step one: hook up an XLR microphone. Do you have that? I know it seems like an insulting question, but you'd be amazed at how many people think it works like an auto-wah instead of a mic-controlled vocoder. wayneblue
lol..Yes, i have that..and I believe I said, "the steps"..lol lol
BillBee
Step 1) It should auto detect the mic for the effect so set it to something different like "same". IIRC setting input 2 to mic forces it to be a well a mic and won't allow the effect to be used. Step 2) There are some old threads here that cover it better but use a google search like: hd500 vocoder as it seems to dig up the "oldies". Step 3) I Never use the vocoder myself but you could always change the patch as an easy method though there probably is as assign you can give it. Enough steps? :)
BillBee
Awesome! Step 1: Ask Nico. :D -B
pianoguyy
Correct. The input selectors SHOULD NOT be microphone. The vocoder knows that you are using a mic, it is built into the effect to be controlled by a mic and does not need it to be an input selection. Selecting microphone will treat it like any other mic patch and will allow 'true microphone' sounds to come through - You don't want that. Can it be turned off? YES. Just assign it to a footswitch like you would any other effect. HOWEVER - there are some volume issues to deal, so it may not be as simple as turning it on and off if you want it to sound good. And just to point out - Bon Jovi used a talk box. Slightly different than a Vocoder.
jeremybnz
Ahhhhh this will be the problem I had too, when I used the vocoder I had the input set to mic and got no sound through, thanks lads!
cclement
And just to point out - Bon Jovi used a talk box. Slightly different than a Vocoder. Indeed! Talkbox - A speaker in a box with a tube that goes up to your mouth. The output from your guitar amp goes into the Talkbox speaker and you shove the tub in your mouth, and then "talk" the guitar into a mic. Think Bon Jovi, Peter Frapmton, Joe Walsh. Vocoder - An electronic device that splits the incoming signal (Modulator) in to frequency bands (filters) and then superimposes those changes in amplitude from the input to a new set of filters on the output (Carrier)*. Think Kraftwek, ELO, Afrika Bambata, or The Disney Main Street Electrical Parade (for those of us old enough to remember it ;) *A way simplified description. I know what you're saying, but you could confuse people. With the talk box, you don't talk. In fact, you must remain silent. You just mouth the words. The vocoder requires you to actually talk - make noise - into the microphone.
