Does the Variax need to be in tune when modelling?

Obviously the Variax would need to be in tune when using the pick ups as a standard guitar.

 

I'm wondering if the strings going out of tune would affect its tuning when it's switched to any of the models, (or does it being out of tune become irrelevant somehow).

The models are really just compression, filters and resonance adjustments to the piezoelectric signals, so they follow exactly what the guitar is tuned to. Virtual Capo is a relative pitch shift on each string so that also follows the physical tuning.

I'm just a bit concerned having read some people seem to have had issues with the Variax Standard staying in tune.

The age of the strings is important too. Just like any guitar, old strings affect the tonality of the sound and are also more difficult to keep in tune. Change the Variax strings just like you would with any other guitar.

I've got a JTV 89 F and I'd like to switch to 10-52 strings set. This would be the first time I change from the set it came with:

Do you think I should let it be done by a Line6 Service Center or could it be done by my usual (not Line6) luthier?

If you change string gauges, a full set-up should be done,...

by an authorized service center who know the product.

 

Changing gauges, changes the tension and therefore changes

the set-up. Have a full set-up done.

Being in tune helps in avoiding frequency artifacts, or keeping those artifacts

from standing out like the proverbial sore thumb.

 

Being in tune, intonated and properly set-up guitar goes a long way.
