hx stomp stock cabs bad

Disclaimer: I am new to the "helix" line. 

I just bought an HX Stomp after watching numerous demos on Youtube. In building my own presets I was able to construct some decent clean sounds. However, the results in the higher gain amp sounds leave a lot to be desired. The sounds were very "fizzy" and thin. When I loaded some IRs(into the cab block) I bought for a Two Notes unit the HX sounded more like what I heard on Youtube. Is this normal? I adjusted the parameters on the input channel and messed with the high/low cut to reflect what I thought would be the most effective but the mid to higher gain amp settings still sound crappy. Any help would be appreciated.

Some people get along fine with the stock cabs, others do not. The nice part about the Helix is that you have both options... stock cabs OR IR's. 

 

As for the Stock Cabs....

• They were captured with a MIC pointing at the center of the cone. That produces a brighter, sometimes fizzier sound and there is no way to move that mic toward the EDGE like many people prefer.
• I'm not fond of the "default mic" that many of them load, especially when it's the '57. Don't get me wrong... the '57 has it's place, but not when pointed at the center of a speaker.
  • For a dynamic mic I much prefer the 409 (Sen), 421 (Sen) or 20 (EV)
  • The ribbons are much warmer ... pull them back a few inches for smoother sounds. 
  • It's a good idea to experiment with all mics and distances on any cabinet to find the one you like best.

FWIW.... I use an IR live because I love the consistency but in the studio I take the time to dial in a stock cab.

Based on user comments and all things "Internets," I'd say you are in the majority, not the minority, when it comes to bailing on the stock cabs. 

 

Personally, I love the stock cabs. It took me a while to figure out how they worked and function, but once I did I liked all of the options. It's hard for me to feel the desire to buy an IR because I don't usually feel the point (but I've bought a few). A lot of this might be that the guitar sound I preferred the most leans towards how these were created in the first place, so of course I see no reason to bend. 

 

However, IRs are just easier. You like it - you use it. Plug and play. The only downside to the IR approach with the Stomp is you're eating up two blocks where I'm often only eating up one.

Would be nice to use a parametric eq with these setings AFTER THE CAB

Low Level: -5dB

Low Freq: 495Hz

Low Q: 1

Mid Level: +12dB

Mid Q: 0.5

Mid Freq: 5kHz

 

Low cut at 100hz

High cut at 7000

 

and/or the cali eq with the classic V shaped parameters, +4 db, +2db, -4db, +2db, +4db (as an example)

 

And last effect in the chain, a tube compressore with default threshold, gain at 7.1 to 7.4, set to limit, emphasis 1.6

 

Gonna love the results.
