sending midi to an ipad mini

Sorry this is a dumb question, but I want to send midi cc messages from my hx effects to an app on an ipad mini.  Do I NEED the expensive camera connect thing or would a cheaper usb to lightning connector do the job?

I tried connecting both devices to a usb hub and don't seem to be receiving and midi at the ipad.  (my hx effects talks fine to my PC so is set up ok.)

You'll save a lot of headaches if you just invest in an official Apple camera connection kit. It just works. I recommend the USB 3 model ... it costs more but it will keep your Ipad mini charged during performances.

Hi,

As noted by “soundog” In the post above, use the Apple CCK to hook up to your iPad.

Yes, there are lots of cheapo Chinese options out there, but the are not guaranteed to work. I know people who went for the cut price version, and had no end of trouble, in fact the iPad refused to accept they were actually connected.

Hope this helps/makes sense.

YES... that is what you need.

"Expensive"... really? You own an HX Effects and an Apple iPad Mini. In Canada the Camera kit is only $50.... and it's worth every penny because it works! It is beneficial to any ipad/iPhone because any class compliant USB device can now be connected. Cameras, keyboards, hard drives, printers, audio interface, etc.... etc...

Not as fast and probably not as reliable for stage work, but you can also go wireless via BlueTooth with a MIDI tx/rx dongle that plugs into your MIDI ports. Can’t confirm this works on an HX Effects as I have an LT, but I don’t see why not. It’ s even cheaper and it can reliably work in a home environment with iPad based loopers or other MIDI based apps. Obviously this does not support audio like the camera kit would.
