There are a lot of quality Helix youtube videos out there, but I've really gotten some outstanding ideas and tones watching John Nathan Cordy videos, who generously shares his knowledge and detailed parameter settings (as well as some excellent riffing). I especially enjoyed his recent videos on Strat clean tones using the new cabs in a Stomp.

I’m a long time fan of young Mr. Cordy’s approach to any modelling device, not just Line 6. The kid has some very interesting ideas, especially with pitch shift, delay and reverb techniques. He is also a big fan of the late Allan Holdsworth, which really elevates him in my book.

Alan Holdsworth! That's cool. I'm a Soft Machine fan (spent many hours lying on the floor with headphones on), and my Tony Williams Lifetime records are almost worn out. Right on!

I think that I have previously mentioned in these threads that when I was a young Art Student, I used to hang out with a bunch of local guys who played our art college events. One of those guys was none other than Allan Holdsworth. Great days, and the bass player (the Gnome) keeps a flame burning for those times right here - link below.

Allan became a replacement guitarist for my old friend Pete, after TZWO dissolved and re-emerged as The Museum, he later joined Tempest with former Colosseum drummer John Hiseman and bassist Mark Clarke. Oddly enough, Pete also attended the same audition for Tempest, but as he got to the stage door he recognised Allan’s playing and suddenly decided against going for it. Things could have turned out differently, as later Allan told Pete, he should have gone for the gig and he (Pete) would have got the job. It’s a very small world.

EDIT:

Ah, yes - Soft Machine -  a huge amount of talent has passed through that outfit.

oh the joy of a toy!

Who's not loving Mr Holdsworth? Always been fascinated by his chord construction approach, more than the scale/solo technique. Btw, as I said in another post, Cordy has great taste and a very smooth touch, so everything he does is a pleasure to listen.

I was rather hoping that when Yamaha took an interest in Line 6 that it might have lead to the addition of some of Yamaha's classic effects from the SPX range such as "Symphonic", but especially the one unit that Allan H actually had a hand in devising - the UD-Stomp. Allan's wonderful "dream box".

That was my core rig in the '90...SGX2000 and a SPX90, what a beast indeed. Unfortunately when you are young you are also stupid, and you keep flipping pedals and stuff just for fun... I wish I had kept both.

LOL, still got the SPX90 in the rack in the corner. I sometimes patch into it if I really do need the Symphonic preset.

Wah! My SPX90 gave up the ghost several years ago. I opened it up and tried to find an easy fix but couldn't. Ended up throwing it away in frustration. Wish I hadn't after reading this thread, because I'd love to try to fix it again. Wouldn't know where to start looking in the landfills. I miss it so.

Oh, no - I hope it wasn’t just a failed battery?

Check out Fleabay - it appears that there are still quite a few around, many in Japan, which surprised me.
