3.6 update fail

Agh! All seemed to be  going fine. Updated HX edit to 3.6, went trough update to 3.6 on helix and all seemed well until it said it couldn't complete and I was to restart the helix and restart HX Edit. So i did…..

Now the HX edit wont “see" the Helix LT. When i star the helix it  says it has 3.6 installed…. but then says “Boot failure, entered update mode "and just sits there and HX Edit says “not connected”. I've tried to put back to factory settings but it won't do that either .

Help?

Hi,

Well, it looks like you're the first to seriously fail on this one - although the "Boot Failure - Entered Update Mode" is a fully documented part of the update process and even has the comment "THIS IS NORMAL." etc., added to it.

I can't be bothered to retype all the stuff about recovering from a failed update -  it's available hundreds of times in this forum, for each and every new firmware that has been released.

Here's the official line:

From this link above, any reference to HX Edit, Firmware, Line 6 Updater etc., means the latest available versions (3.6 or 1.27 for Updater)

Oh, yeah, there are also instructions about updating in the HX Edit Pilot's Guide, available by clicking on the Question Mark icon in the lower left corner of HX Edit, or the link below.

https://line6.com/data/6/0a020a3f1068664480499d1b73/application/pdf/HX Edit Pilot's Guide 3.60 - English .pdf

Hope this helps/makes sense

Ah, yes! It's like deja vu, all over again.

I thought it was too quiet in here - we were doing really well, but here we are after 4 days!

So, it begins - "Update bricked my Helix!"

I wonder how many have held back until the weekend to do this?

Let's hope it's the only one on this update.

And after all these years I wonder...how difficult it can be for L6 to just add few extra lines/pages of text in that damn error screen to help the user in the process? I mean, even just a link would be better than that "boot failure. entered update mode!"

Yes, with the following understanding. The Factory reset is what's most important here. Having done that all your custom presets are gone but any new factory presets have been installed. Of course you want to replace your custom presets, hence the Restore. But a complete Restore will immediately overwrite the new factory presets. That's why....

I took a walk and when I came back the "boot failure entered update mode appeared. Also the HX Edit 3.6 closed so there was no "resume" instruction. I restarted the HX Edit but it could not see the Helix (Floor).

Now do I wait for how long or do I power off and restart or what happens now or should I do no now or should I just keep breathing deep and relax (I am hyperventilating at the moment)?

Well, the Release Notes do say -

halfway through the update to 3.60, Helix's LCD reads "Boot Failure. Entered Update Mode!". If you’re not there, how will you know when it reaches the halfway point of the operation.

I guess you could read that as “please don’t go for a walk, this update requires you full and undivided attention”.

This is from the last round of failures - Follow the link above, any reference to HX Edit, Firmware, Line 6 Updater etc., means the latest available versions (3.6 or 1.27 for Updater)

Hope this helps/makes sense.

The HX Edit 3.6 was indicating 33% complete when I just walked out. Got back few minutes later and HX Edit has closed all by itself and Helix was in the "Boot Failure. Entered update Mode". Really would it have made a difference if i was just staring at the PC screen all the time?

Now I cannot connect to unit also for HX Edit of for Updater (both latest versions downloaded just before I allowed HX Edit 3.6 to do the update for me . Only other thing I did was export my User 1 list of presets just as a backup.

Now Please help how do I get this Helix out of this mode. Factory Reset does not seem to work it just goes back to the same message each time (though during initial startup it indicates that it is now on Version 3.60 and will reset globals etc etc but then just goes back into the screen with red stripe stating "Boot Failure. Entered update Mode"

Let’s give this one more shot - Recover from failed update procedures v.3.6

First - remove all prior installations of Line 6 HX Edit - on a Mac ensure there are no aliases pointing back to an earlier version.

Now go to the "DOWNLOADS" menu at the top of this page and from  "- Choose Hardware -" select Helix, then under "- Choose Software -" select HX Edit, now select your PC/Mac OS from under the "- Choose OS -" tab, then click “Go”.  From the next page you can select HX Edit 3.6 for your Helix LT, repeat the download procedure for the Firmware v.3.6 Flash Memory, and the Line 6 Updater version 1.27.

Download all these items to your computer and note where they are.

Unplug the USB cable from both your computer and the Helix, then turn the Helix off and then on again while holding down Foot Switches 6&12 while turning the power on. This will put your Helix into “Safe Boot” mode, at this point you may see a black, or error screen, but just keep going.

Ensure that HX Edit is closed and reconnect you Helix to your computer with a known good USB cable - do not use a hub, some front USB ports on PCs act like a hub, so use one of the ports on the back. Your Updater cannot detect the hardware in a failed state if HX Edit is running.

Ensure you are disconnected from the internet, also shut down all Line 6 software or any programs that use audio, like DAWs, iTunes, Spotify, video games, etc. If your computer's sleep timer is set relatively short, disable it, as the update can fail if your computer goes to sleep. Make sure external devices are not currently sending MIDI to Helix/HX. If you're unsure, unplug Helix/HX's MIDI IN port.

Now launch the Updater Utility that you downloaded earlier, and then select "Offline Mode". Your Helix and current firmware version should now show up in the window, click on the dark green coloured band and you should now have the option to select a  local file - click “Choose File”, point it at the Flash Memory file you downloaded and let it get on with the update. If you are updating from a firmware version prior to v.2.80 the installation may appear to happen twice - this is normal as the Core operating system is being modified.

When it completes, you need to perform a factory reset on your Helix, then you can install the new HX Edit v.3.6 software, perform a restore from backup using the file you created before starting the failed update, and you should be good to go.

Please note: After you complete the restore from back up, you will notice that the next time you restart the hardware, it will run the “Rebuilding Presets” routine. This is perfectly normal as it ensures that all you older presets are optimised for use in the new firmware. Also, any time you install a preset created with an earlier version of the firmware (e.g. a preset downloaded from CustomTone, etc.), the Rebuilding Presets function will run again after the next restart - this is an expected housekeeping routine for the unit.

No guarantees are given or implied, you do this at your own risk. If it doesn’t work, raise a ticket with Customer Support - you may have a hardware issue that cannot be resolved by anyone in this user forum.

Please don’t go for a walk while doing this.

Hope this helps/makes sense.

  • 1 month later...

Zero success with the 3.60 update.

In January I jumped through all of the hoops going from 2.80 to 3.50, diving into multiple threads after failing to properly read the instructions, but finally prevailing with the Helix successfully in 3.50.

Now attempting to update to 3.60, I very carefully tip-toed through each step, meticulously reading the instructions multiple times. To no avail, "Update Failed, please reboot and try again."

I've now spent a couple hours making multiple attempts at updating to 3.60 and it fails every time. I attempted to walk-back to 3.50...failed. Only when walking back to 3.15 was I successful and the system booted up properly. I then followed the instructions to get to 3.60 again, with the aid of this thread...failed. This is defeating and exhausting.

I don't even get to "Boot Failure..." during the update, just the "Update failed, reboot and try again.'

Now for all the details:

  • Running Windows 10
  • HX edit running 3.60
  • First update attempted with HX edit running 3.60, every subsequent update attempted with Updater 1.27 in offline mode.
  • Helix put into update mode upon boot up (switches 6+12)
  • HX edit completely closed out (PC rebooted)
  • Successful walk-back to 3.15 would indicate the USB cable connection/port selection is fine, as well as is leaving Chrome open (to read these threads) alongside the Updater running.

What am I missing?

Ironically, this is happening when I'm in the thick of a dilemma on whether or not to sell the Helix and go with a simpler/smaller pedal setup. I'm a bassist and the Helix feels a little overkill, plus the happiness-to-headaches balance is often tilted to headaches. I chalk most of this up to user issues, not that the Helix is insufficient.

Any insight on how to right this ship would be much appreciated. Any other details needed let me know.
