BrettinMS
My setup: HX Stomp run directly through JBL 305s I'm curious as to why overdriven tones thru just an amp block sound more open than when adding a cab block. It's like throwing a blanket over the sound after the cab is engaged. How am I erring?
Schmalle
Guitar speakers are not full range speakers and their high end response is significantly tamed beyond about 5kHz. Take a look at the frequency response chart of a Celestion V30 to see for yourself. 1
theElevators
If you are running through a monitor, then you need amp+cab. Cab darkens the sound, that's a known "side effect". Nobody performs with an amp block without a cab/cab sim, unless they are trying to recreate the Beatles' Revolution guitar sound.

You don't mention anything about what cabs you're pairing with a given amp, or more importantly your choice of mic sims and their position. Just grabbing a cabinet and dropping it in the chain after the amp block is only half the battle. The mic choice and where you put it have a HUGE impact on the final result... just as it does in a studio mic-ing a real cabinet. There are a bunch of mics to choose from... try different ones and move them around. I assure you that the cab/mic sims in Helix can produce anything from the "wet blanket" effect you mention to "screeching like a f*cked cat during a bird calling contest". Your job is to find a happy medium...

Your JBL305s are 5" powered studio monitors with a given frequency response of somewhere around 49 - 20,000Hz An average guitar speaker will only reproduce approximately 75 Hz — 5 kHz, or for electric bass speakers, down to 41 Hz for regular four-string basses or down to about 30 Hz for five-string instruments. Your HX Stomp is attempting to model exactly what would be the real world sound of a guitar cabinet with a microphone on it. It's a science thing. Your monitors are able to reproduce a lot more higher frequencies than the modelled cabinets. Play around with the various settings, but there are no rules with this stuff - go with what you like the sound of. Hope this helps makes sense.
