Atomant669
Hi I am a new guitarist but it seems that I can never find any stickies or ready information on or if you should hook up your multi effect processor to a computer speaker or monitors? Ideally?
TheRealZap
i use mine primarily in a studio setting with studio monitors... although i do use an amp too... it depends on your needs really, but studio monitors are a great path if your main focus is recording. Atomant669
I am a new guitarist and really am just exploring around. If I need to be specific, I want to get a great tone and to acquire the taste of how different amp sounds like. I've already own a Spider iv 75 with short board and will soon be purchasing a DT25 head and cab with the 500X. I would primarily be playing in a bedroom and mostly just for my ears and no intention of recording yet though that might be anytime soon. So yeah someone please tell me is there a lot of difference between speakers and monitors and for my usage which should I go with?
Atomant669
Say if I were to use a same patch on a computer speaker and one on a monitor. How different would these two sound?
TheRealZap
could be alot different... as your typical computer speakers will have their own characteristics.... studio monitors try to be transparent and give you the sound of the source.... you can of course play and enjoy the sounds with computer speakers... it should all be relative.... but when you start recording you may find that your recordings don't sound good anywhere else.... and that kind of sucks... from that shopping list, it sounds like you're being pretty serious about your sound... i'd get some studio monitors... even the behringer ones if you want to try and conserve a little cash... they are surprisingly decent (i use them...) of course there are much better (AKA much more expensive)
radatats
just a side note but switching between monitors (FRFR) and the DT is going to have its own issues. Tone patches set for your monitors will generally be created using Studio Direct output and full amp models while the moment you hook up your DT with L6 link, the POD switches to (Combo/Studio Front/Stack) and you can't change it. You will also want to use the Pre models instead of the Full models with the DT. End result is a completely different set of patches for the DT and the monitors. You may want to rethink your purchase plans unless you truly need the DT for a different purpose. You might be better served for your stated intentions with an L6t with your 500X and you can also run tracks through it too for jamming... At least this way you will only need one set of patches and the L2t will do electric and acoustic...

So in a way it's different but not so different? And since I would be using a 500X with all different amp models to model my tone. I should really be getting a monitor speaker which is 'distilled' instead of using a computer speaker which is 'colored'?

An FRFR speaker like the L2 (m or t) will probably serve you better at 'bedroom volumes'. You won't get a true tube sound out of a DT25 in such an enclosed space without your ears starting to bleed! I believe the DT has a low volume setting but my understanding of that is the tube sound is being modelled anyway. I run an HD500 into an L3m both live and at low volumes and it works equally well in both situations. Radatats is right- if you are running through a DT and monitor speakers you will have to run a set of patches for each set up separately......which is a pain in the proverbial. Atomant669
Okay so the DT25 is out since I would be playing primarily in my bedroom. What's the difference between the l2 'm' or l2 't'?
radatats
the model T has a built in mixer which makes it a bit more versatile for adding vocals, another guitar, etc. and is about $100 more... well worth it in my opinion...
Atomant669
Are there any advantages in using the l2t over your standard monitor speakers?
radatats
built in DSP allows them to connect to your POD with L6 link and configure to match your patch, electric guitar, acoustic, PA...
radatats
+1 for Rlblues... I have been on the fence about upgrading my FRFR and I am having a hard time paying up for the L2t. I have been waiting forever for the new Behringer KXD12 to be released as I can get a pair of them and an M5 with cables for the same price. Meanwhile I am happy with my power amp/speakers for home along with my DT25 and cabs... but it's too much too lug out to a gig. There really are a lot of great options, just so hard to pick one and stick with it!
Atomant669
Or I should just stick with the DT25 and get me some monitor speakers as well? For a total newbie like me it's pretty ambiguous as to what the lt2 can do.
JTSC777
When I sit at my laptop and interface my HD500 with it I use my little inexpensive M-Audio studio monitors.Great way to build patches /arrange banks etc..and I get a good idea of what my patches will sound like with my FRFR rig. Some front panel tweaks on the HD500 are almost always needed though when you crank it up through your FRFR speakers whether they are Line 6s'/Altos/EVs'/QSCs or any others. As far as amps go get a good used Fender HRDLX III or something decent with tubes and an effect loop.Make a bank or two of patches you like-turn off the cab modelling and run the HD500 into the effect return of your amp.Simple and sounds great not good.At 6pm tonite I am doing an outdoor gig using my HD500/Fender BDRI/1x12 ext. cab and a Roland GR-20 guitar synth for some keyboard sounds I will run direct to PA/Monitors.Tomorrow I will do a 100 seat club with a different band and use an Egnater Tweaker head/HD500/Strat/Les Paul and an Epiphone electric mandolin.Yes the HD500 is great for electric mandolin too!You will have to figure out what works best for you by experimenting a bit. The DT25/50 are great amps but not easy to use for someone new to the modelling amp thing. Keep it simple at first so you spend some time playing/practicing/writing and gigging. The more time you have that guitar in your hands and you are playing it the better you will be. Good Luck To You! batmanroxus
SYSTEM SETUP! In my humble opinion it is the first thing you should do and it should be #1. First in the Guide or Manual. If you got it new and run it into a Power Amp [iN] it sounds like crap because it comes setup to record direct.
mystic38
I dunno... the DT25 is expensive, the L2T is expensive,... and the HD500x is expensive.. and as a beginning guitarist you will have huge issues trying to get a good solid tone like a tube amp..as you have no frame of past reference to compare it to.. why not get a relatively clean used tube amp of high regard and use that?.. something like a fender blues junior?.. separate gain and volume so you can have crunch at low volumes, and you can run the pod direct into it... instant great tone, and as your skill with the pod increases you will get huge gains in flexibility and tonal palette. and if you buy used, the BJr will not lose a penny no matter how long you own it
