  1. Does this help: http://line6.com/support/topic/2981-pod-hd-500-midi-controlling-an-evh-5150-iii-50-watt-amp/ I haven't watched the videos as I don't use 4CM or a MIDI controlled Amp, but I do know a bit about MIDI on an HD500... First if you change the Global MIDI channel on the HD500 from 1 to anything else the Amp will ignore the default Program Change messages that the HD500 always emits - this means it won't change patches when you change HD500 patches. Then if you want to change Amp Patches you will need to explicitly define a Program Change message to be sent on Channel 1 when you press a switch. But because that is part of an HD500 patch you will need to duplicate that setting on every HD500 patch you use. I personally would have a generic as possible HD500 patch containing an emulation of your main Pedal Board stuff and using FS 5-8 mode free all 8 switches to control effects on/off and amp channels (a single switch can turn on/off any number of effects and send a dedicated MIDI message). You might need a few additional patches for special songs, but I would expect that 90% + of a gig can be covered without changing HD patches at all.
  2. Yes it becomes an available sound card, but it doesn't have to be the sound card - if you are not recording from the HD interface then there is no reason to make it the active sound card and all sound on the computer can continue to be output using the existing interface. If you are Recording using the HD as the incoming sound card, then at least on windows then it also needs to be the outbound sound card.
  3. Wow that is mad very brave! Using a JTV with an HD500(x) is a revelation and takes the selection of models when playing live out of the equation as you just use the HD to select predefined JTV models... and tunings... and volume and tone settings... and the volume and tone knobs can be used to control Amp and Fx parameters... Model selection is even better with the latest firmware as the HD will switch Bank on the JTV so that the pickup selector is correct no matter what the Bank selected on the knob is. Welcome to the club, I am sure that a bit of tweaking will get everything to your satisfaction
  4. 1/4" Jack inserted and volume knob above minimum - the best way to be sure is to press the Model knob and it should be lit up Blue. From http://line6.com/data/6/0a06434c5bcd520d3ab6261d4/application/pdf/Workbench%20HD%20Pilot's%20Guide%20-%20English%20(%20Rev%20A%20).pdf Before you begin your first Workbench HD editing session, you’ll need the following: • The Variax Digital Interface that came with your JTV (to connect your Variax to your computer via USB). • A fully charged JTV battery and a 1/4 inch guitar cable (plug your cable into your JTV to power it up). • Headphones, a guitar amp or a playback system (to monitor your guitar’s output). It then takes you through updating using monkey but you need all of the above unless you have an HD500/HDPro when the VDI link can power the JTV and act as the Interface as long as you are using latest Firmware versions. version 1.9 firmware is not a high enough version
  5. HD500 and HD500 will connect computer to JTV and support Workbench HD - it was a change we asked and only became available in later firmware versions If using the supplied USB to VDI adaptor you do have to have a charged battery in the JTV and to switch on the JTV as that interface doesn't power the guitar
  6. Flavour of the month at TGP at the moment for value but good quality FRFR is the Alto TS110A or TS112A, also branded as Alesis Alpha: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=1472630 Musicians Friend have been selling then for $179 recently ($250 at the moment) and at 600W (TS110A) they can do a good job as backline as well as a monitor http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/alto-ts110a-600w-10-2-way-active-speaker
  7. The FX on an HD500 are the same as those on the M9/M13 series, and while documentation is a bit sparse on the HD500, they are a bit better for the M series. See http://line6.com/data/6/0a060b316ac34f0593fabe278/application/pdf/M13/M9/M5%20FX%20Parameters%20-%20English%20(%20Rev%20B%20).pdf and in section 1-3 it describes the Multi-head: Multi Head Based on the Roland® RE-101 Space Echo, which had multiple stationary heads. You change delay times by switching amongst these heads, and you can play back on multiple heads at the same time to get multi-tap delay effects. • Knob 1: Delay Time. Displayed in milliseconds or note value. • Knob 2: Delay Feedback. • Knob 3: Turns heads 1 & 2 on and off. • Knob 4: Turns heads 3 & 4 on and off. • Knob 5: Mix. When using the Multi Head Delay model, you’ll find there are many possible combinations of delay effects, depending on your selection of Head On/Off parameters. It’s best to set a Delay Time first by adjusting Knob 1. To set a Delay Time to a precise millisecond value, dial in a delay time that’s close to what you want, then fine tune it by pressing and holding Tap while continuing to turn Knob 1. As an option you can set Delay Time to a note value by turning Knob 1 clockwise until the 1/4 note symbol is displayed, then Tap in the tempo of your song. Once your main tempo is set, experiment with different delay repeats by selecting different combinations of the Head On/Off settings, using Knobs 3 and 4. When you have the effect you want, adjust the Delay Feedback amount using Knob 2. So you have 4 heads, but you can only switch each head on or off and not adjust individual delay times. The only way that I can see you getting what you want is to have two Multi-head delays on parallel paths - one set to give 200, 400 and 600, the other to give you the 1000. Not a great solution... you could request a Multi-tap delay with variable delay times on IdeaScale Eq settings are a black art due especially to frequency being set in Hz (in most cases) and the scale not being documented. The best resource can be found at http://foobazaar.com/podhd/toneGuide/eq#effects-param which includes response graphs sourced from here http://line6.com/support/topic/335-frequency-response-graphs-for-hd500-eqs/ Again this reveals that the parametric eq doesn't go above 4500 hz, and neither do any of the others, but you might be able to get something like what you are after by using the Shift EQ Hi to boost with a shift of 70% or so which should shift the 4K up - no idea whether this gets anywhere close to the Q2.0 you want though. You could try IdeaScale... but better EQs has been requested many times before. Somebody else might have better ideas than me though
  8. I meant noise level, not signal level! The pickups are well balanced out of the box
  9. It doesn't have a coil tap no, it is just a normal humbucker and quieter than the single coils which are true single coils and therefore pick up electromagnetic interference like any thing (noisy). That said I don't use them much as I stay in Model mode all of the time which is absolutely silent. Some other tend to use the magnetics all the time and only models when they need to, so they may be able to give better information
  10. Interesting - I checked a few websites around Birmingham, and while the bigger chains (GuitarGuitar, PMT) claim to have stock (at least in the warehouse for online orders) the Independents have nothing. For example FairDeal can sell you the M series or even a TC Electronics G System, but have nothing in the HD line at all (http://www.fairdealmusic.co.uk/effects/multi-effects/electric-guitar-effects.html). Likewise ExpressMusic (http://www.expressmusicstore.co.uk/) have nothing HD, but can order you a POD 2.0! As for the smaller independents as far as they are concerned LIne 6 is a brand that is only found in secondhand stock. I have to agree - Line 6 and HD series in the UK only exist for the "national brand" music stores such as Andertons, PMT, GuitarGuitar, Nevada and GAK. However the state of the independent music stores in the UK has deteriorated over the last few years. I went into our local guitar specialist and he spent 1/2 hour bemoaning the state of supply of musical instruments and how they are making it impossible to stock their products. You can stock Fender guitars if: You dedicate a specific display area to the brand (predominant and large as specified by Fender) Invest your own money in stocking this display area With exactly what Fender tell you should be displayed in exactly which position In real terms this meant investing a large amount of money that he doesn't have, in taking stock that Fender tells him he has to take, irrespective of whether he has a chance in hell of shifting it. What he cannot do is specify what he would like to stock and take for example just 8 models that he knows he can sell. He specifically went on about Fender, but said the same is true for Gibson, Marshall and all the other big brands. The suppliers whether deliberately or just incompetently are doing everything they can to kill off the small independents, and are killing off the ability of most people to see their kit hands on. My local specialist is getting on a bit, has shut down half the store footprint already and just has a minimum stock of no-name guitars that will tide him over until he retires and closes down next year. That is why you only find big name music brands in big name music stores - they are the only ones with the financial resources and floor space to keep up with the supplier's demands. Are you doing this Line 6? Interestingly GAK are selling HD500X for £379.00 with free Carry Bag which is definitely a good deal http://www.gak.co.uk/en/line-6-pod-hd500x/85094
  11. I think you have misunderstood it a little bit - the expression controller "position" is varied using cc1/cc2. The same is true for all of the CC messages - the switch ones change the position of the switch - as the CC increases past 64 the switch is treated as down and as it comes down below the switch is treated as up. You can control all of the main foot controls via MIDI as well as Program Change. This is confirmed by uber guru phil_m here http://line6.com/support/topic/187-has-the-fix-been-done-to-allow-volume-control-of-the-hd-500-using-midi-cc-7/ and zubala here http://line6.com/support/topic/2677-pod-hd-pro-fcb1010-midi-foot-controller/ (HD Pro which is identical MIDI implementation) and numerous other discussions across the web. You are quite correct that you cannot set Amp or Effect control settings directly via MIDI.. that is because you control them indirectly through Exp 1 and 2. External MIDI Source -> CC1 -> Exp 1 position -> Effect control position (50+ all changed at the same time) You might not know that if you attach a JTV via VDI that Exp 3 and 4 appear to give two additional Expression Controls - the positions of these can only be varied by the Volume and Tone knobs on the JTV.
  12. Probably not quite what was wanted, but if you have an old Cry Baby you could always change it into an Expression Pedal: http://www.strymon.net/2010/09/07/strymon-tech-corner-2-build-your-own-expression-pedal/ On this discussion they talk about the above and about just building your own from spare parts http://forum.fractalaudio.com/mfc-discussion/33526-hack-crybaby-expression-pedal.html
  13. I can understand what the OP is going on about - producing a device that looks to the HD as if it is an Expression Pedal and which plugs into the Exp 2 socket, but is actually controlled by an external modulation source. The thing that I find to be a problem is the early presumption for the whole post: "far as i know, midi is poorly implemented in the pod hd series and basically has switching functionality only". As is clearly stated in the Advanced guide (second page of Appendix B) [edit -> B... stupid emoticons] Exp1 and Exp2 can be controlled via MIDI Continuous Controller messages: MIDI CC # Value Function 001 0 - 127 EXP-1 Pedal Assignment 002 0 - 127 EXP-2 Pedal Assignment How would the rack HD Pro manage if all of the Pedal functions on the HD 500 couldn't be controlled over MIDI as it is basically the same device? So at least for the use-cases where the LFO source is via MIDI the HD500/Pro(&X) already have this covered
  14. Are you sure that this isn't just the strings stretching... this is only to be expected - for any Floyd Rose (double locking) system you need to regularly reset the locked position at the headstock: Loosen the locks at the headstock end Reset the Bridge tuners so they are in a neutral position Tune Guitar Tighten locks at Headstock Now you will have a reasonable range of adjustment at the Bridge tuners again
  15. I just realised that somebody else asked a similar question in a way that my mind processed a bit differently... The JTV can do exactly what you want.... if you use Magnetic pickups for the standard notes and a model for the altered tunings and merge the outputs. This can be done in Workbench setting up an altered tuning patch with blended mags, or if you have an HD500/Pro you can set it up on a patch my patch basis and even process the model and mags differently
  16. Supported is perhaps the wrong word - "working ones" is probably better. On the pod assign Exp 2 to control something with Min = 0 and Max = 100. Then with a view where you can see the current values move the pedal across the full range, and it works if the controlled something varies across the full range. If it does then it works, if it doesn't then it doesn't work.
  17. In a model only then no, you can only go +12 on each string, but yes if you mix mag pickups with all tuning on a model. You are limited to the mags being in whatever your standard tuning is
  18. Yes you do have to set it for every patch, and it takes up an effects slot - it is the option to use if you want the drum machine (or any other electronic instrument like a synth) to be mixed when on stage, but for home practice the mp3 input will do fine.
  19. I use some "sticky backed felt" immediately after the Nut on my JTV 69. Dark brown can barely see it, unlike a scrunchy The most recent detailed discussion is here: http://line6.com/support/topic/111-make-your-variax-sound-100-better/ Some much older discussions on the archive: http://line6.com/supportarchivenew/thread/58759 http://line6.com/supportarchivenew/thread/83512
  20. I think Clay-man means this one http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Variax-Palm-Muting-compensation/655473-23508
  21. When using a (consistently set) Volume pedal across patches you actually want current position to be picked up instantly. What we perhaps want is a way to have two modes on Express Pedals one that acts as now, the other that saves the "position" and only have it move when the Expression Pedal goes through that value again
  22. Try asking the person that posted this: http://line6.com/support/topic/1953-anyone-using-guitar-synth-with-variax/?do=findComment&comment=11538
  23. Or if you want a more "rugged" option, add an FX Loop as the last effect and plug the Drum machine 1/4" outs into the FL Loop return, then set the FX Loop Mix to 50%. I do this a lot with a Keyboard to avoid dragging around a separate mixer.
  24. IdeaScale entry created - http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/JTV-Treble-Bleed-Cap/666777-23508
  25. Me too. Don't have many guitars, but the first I had was customised with PRS pickups by Chandler Guitars and had a treble bleed added, the second was a Patrick Eggle LA that had a treble bleed as stock. If I want a darker tone there is the tone knob right? Why would I want the tone to go dark as the volume is reduced because of the RC effect of the cable? Played with a Trantec Wireless system for many years and because that had only a foot of cable into a high impedance input the drop off in tone when volume was lowered was negligable - really miss it with the JTV. You do know that Line 6 actually simulate the tone loss when using VDI!
