Then you might like to try the many variations of Cab, Mic + settings such as ER, Resonance, Thump, etc to see if you cannot actually get really close just using the HD Cab models ;)

Thanks. I went over this a few times with meambobbo and others, and I think we raised suggestions that either it should be possible to adjust the delay at the mixer, or that the HD500 should automatically introduce a delay in the shorter path so that it matched that of the longer path - and have the ability to invert one side should one amp model gives an inverted signal to the other. meambobbo in his guide suggests getting around it by adding neutral setting EQ blocks, which add a short delay, but I don't like that too much as it is all guesswork (not knowing even which path is delayed most, by how much or how much delay the EQ provides) and it uses precious FX slots.

There is no phase problem with Input = Same because there is nowhere for a delay to occur between the two inputs; it is one ADC reading the that single input. The only place where you get phase problems is when you run parallel paths with different content and then mix them back to mono at some point. Keeping them true stereo/dual mono out to different speakers and you have no problems as the difference in timing will be the same as moving your head an inch to one side or the other. If you mix two different signal paths such as two different Amps back to mono by either setting the mixer to put both channels to centre or following the mixer with a mono effect such as Tube Comp then the slight timing differences through those Amp models will potentially cause comb filter problems - where at certain frequencies the delay causes the signal to be effectively inverted and cancel out. This latter issue is what meambobbo spotted when trying to mix two different cabs together, but if you ran them as dual mono the same combination probably sounds huge. Personally I usually run Variax on 1 and Guitar on 2, because I play Variax as my primary instrument and I prefer to raise the gain level when I choose to - there is little enough headroom with some effects before their undoubtedly accurate overloaded sound becomes apparent. That same overloaded component may be exactly when somebody else wants though - there are many stories about the guitar on some very famous records being recorded through some very odd equipment and a "guitar amp" not being found anywhere!

connection method for direct-to-PA + monitor w/ powered PA speaker
Rewolf48 replied to joebor1776's topic in POD HD
As long as you are not using wide stereo effect such as ping pong delay you should be fine - or you can just place a mono effect towards the end of the chain; I currently place a tube comp late in the chain to keep the guitar level balanced and use it for volume by linking Exp 2 to the Level control. Tube Comp is mono (see http://line6.com/support/page/kb/_/pod/pod-hd/stereomono-fx-list-for-pod-hd-r567) so L and R XLR outputs are the same -
connection method for direct-to-PA + monitor w/ powered PA speaker
Rewolf48 replied to joebor1776's topic in POD HD
Line or Amp depends on whether the Powered Speaker is set for Line or Mic level input. You could try both, but I have found it important at least on my speaker not to do all the amplification at the power stage, ramp up the input level but not to the point of overloading and then bring up the main level; leaving the input level low and doing it all with the power amp gives a scooped sound that just vanishes live I also have mono or close enough to mono patches (room based reverbs will be stereo) and feed one XLR to my speaker and one to PA -
Use the 1/4 outs, and you will need a cable that will get you down to a stereo 1/8 or a combination of adaptors.

connection method for direct-to-PA + monitor w/ powered PA speaker
Rewolf48 replied to joebor1776's topic in POD HD
Why do you need that? The HD500 has 4 outs one of which goes to PA leaving 3 to go to a personal PA speaker. If your speaker has a volume control on the side facing you, then great otherwise you are limited to a fixed volume because all outputs are linked to the HD Volume Control and you don't want to change the to PA volume. Unless you use the FX Loop to send to your personal speaker in which case you can control the send level. Or you can take a monitor feed from the PA back to your personal speaker and get a mix of whatever you want, you could even plug the IEM receiver into it to hear exactly what you are hearing now. -
Like Sales Tax ? ;)

I don't have this problem with my HD500 and JTV69, so it is not a problem everywhere, but.. when I upgrade the HD firmware I always unplug all connections except power and USB from the HD500; you might try it - it is just possible that the extra current draw of the JTV causes a bad write to the firmware flash memory, and other people on earlier upgrades had reported problems with other inputs or outputs connected.

Cut the resonance when playing loud into a real cabinet or PA speaker that has its own resonance (plus the room), set it to default or raise it when using headphones, recording direct or other "dead" monitoring environment

Wanted to buy the new HD Models bundle but had to pay 24$ in taxes
Rewolf48 replied to Guitarmaniac64's topic in POD HD
As a UK resident I wouldn't normally have a clue about this, except that my day job is working for a Retail Systems company and I have worked on modelling Sales Tax rules for worldwide implementations quite a bit. Technically crusinon2 is quite correct except that in many states the Sales Tax that you would have paid when you bought from an out of state retailer is defined as Use Tax and it is normally but not always due at the same rate to your local Tax Authority (State, City, etc) charged on the date of the transaction as part of your Tax return. Sales Tax is only enforced as collectable by an online retailer if the have Nexus in your local Tax Authority which is usually when they have a physical presence (Store, Distribution Centre or Office). The fact that most people don't bother is why there is a lot of pressure in the US at the moment for at least the largest online retailers to charge local Sales Tax due at the point of delivery because it is an unfair playing field where your local retailers have to charge not just what would be normally due, but instead an increased rate to make up for all the income that is lost because people aren't following the Use Tax rules. What Line 6 has done is absolutely correct from a Tax perspective, but it is unfortunate that they didn't make it clear anywhere in the purchase process before payment that your Local Sales tax would be added to the $99 which is why most non-US buyers have got upset. I did wonder what would have happened if I had declared my address as being Alaska, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware or Oregon because those States don't have Sales tax and therefore I would have paid 0%... but my Credit Card is a UK one and I am not sure that the transaction would have gone through. -
Damn... those teachers at the Guitar Institute had it completely wrong! Expecting us to learn advanced guitar techniques while not plugging in...

My powered speaker has the volume on the back and when on its side as a monitor is really not that easy to get to - or are you saying that your Direct Box has volume controls on it?

Built A Better Variax Vdi Cable
Rewolf48 replied to joebar23's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
VDI is compatible with standard ethernet at a hardware level, so for test purposes you can use any ethernet cable you want. It is not in terms of signal so don't plug one into a wireless router and expect to get audio over wireless that way - especially as VDI carries Power from HD500 to Variax -
The Van Halen song "Panama" was recorded in 1983 and on tour was played with a Marshall Plexi some debate about the Variac treatment of the amp used on the recording. The Peavey 5150 wasn't introduced until 1992

Yes different powered PA speakers have different responses and resonances, and it also varies with positioning, how they are mounted and what the room they are in is like - this is why when using one for backline you need the Global EQ. The higher quality the speaker the less the variation from flat will be, but typically the more budget ones are not designed to be flat response, they are designed to be a "flattering" response when used as general PA, and typically that response is in conflict with the requirement for a Guitar monitor - too much bass and highs. It is not enough just to look at the frequency response graphs, you need to also know how much distortion that graph allowed (e.g. 3% THD preferably lower). I would expect that the L2m is by far the best performing of those three, as Line 6 considered the use of amplifying a HD which I seriously doubt that Behringer bothered with. Positioning all three on speaker stands might have reduced some of the differences.
-
Yes - while you may not be able to hear above 10K (I can't any more), what you might be able to hear is a reduction in distortion of sounds below that because the higher frequencies are required to represent the sharpest edges of that distortion. Assuming that your sound reinforcement system is capable of reproducing it in the first place. So from the graphs I would say that some people would detect a difference, but most rock guitarists probably can't ;)

Thighten up Volume / Tone Knob
Rewolf48 replied to Dshow's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I would also like to know how to change the resistance of the knobs, but for the opposite reason - the volume and tone knobs are too stiff to be rolled with a single finger and I have to use finger and thumb which makes violining impossible. I do know one answer, which is of course to play with my knob a lot, thought I would get that one in before anyone else, but if there is some sort of resistance adjustment on the back it would be a lot quicker and easier on the wrist if you know what I mean ;) -
If the suggestion of turning the Global EQ into a per patch EQ is taken up then you know what will happen? Everybody will suddenly want a Global EQ added again to adjust for the environment! Adding a copy of it as a separate effect would be a different situation though - in the FX pack can I ask for a EH B9 please?
-
I notice that the Hi and Low cut will always provide some high and low end attenuation, which might explain some people reporting a difference in sound if the Global EQ is on (default?). For example the Low Cut while it is -3db at 20Hz is actually starting to attenuate at 100Hz and the high cut is attenuating slightly at 10K even when set to 20K. Did you do a plot for the old firmware with an empty path against which we could compare or was that somebody else?
-
Until that happens I guess that you will just have to make do with tuning for the room and then after the gig writing down what the settings were...
-
I use audacity which is free, allows you to select a section and apply a change tempo effect to slow it down and loop play, when you have it you can undo to speed it up again. Will have try the eq trick because that would be easy to do as well.

I also had to re-calibrate Exp 1 to get it working with my existing patches that I reloaded after the update - the immediate symptom was that it did nothing at, but after re-calibration it worked as expected
