Is my POD HD 500X clipping or is there something wrong with my bass?
Onomatopoeia replied to Onomatopoeia's topic in POD HD
thank you very much! Do you mean the mid focus eq? should I put it last or first? Any tips on EQ settings? Stupid %.... I removed all the effects and put only tube comp first in chain and a mid focus with HP freq 0%, Q at 40 % and LP at 72 %, Q at 36 %. Is this a good place to start? Now I think the clipping is gone... Might be some of the effects that caused the problem? ps. I Hade the cab res set off. If set it to 50 % the distortion is less but the tone gets dull.- 49 replies

What freq would i have to dail out and what eq would be the best and where in the chain? I have a mid focus last in the chain now. How do you put the tube comp in the fx loop, or do you mean that an external comp would solve the clipping? If I bought an external di and then go in to the POD, would that solve it?- 49 replies

I do have reaper. And let us say that i get those typer of waves, then what? Since i only have the Pod as my recording interface i can only know if there is clipping, but dont if its from the bass or Pod itself?- 49 replies

Hm... The thing is, that I mostly play using headphones (not very loud) and also have a Alto 15" powered monitor, but it´s hard to turn it up since I live in an small apartment. Don´t know, but using a tube comp att 42% threshold and 0% volume helps alot, but compresses the tone to much. Also, when using an empty patch i get way more less clipping. Same thing with tuner. Maybe something with the Cougar 800? Have tried lowering master DEP and nothing. I run the contour at 50 %, but if i turn it to 0% the clipping is much less, but tone sucks.- 49 replies

Hello! I have a problem that's driving me insane! I´ve been using my pod hd500x with my bass for about a year now and I´m having some sort of clipping. It´s mostly when I´m plucking the low B string and I get a real nasty distortion. The bass I´m using is a cheap Sterling Subray 5 and it´s famous for its crappy HIGH output electronics. However, I just changed out the pre to a nice Seymour Duncan smc 3M3 active preamp, but the problem´s still there.... I even lowered the pickup so it´s flat with the body but still clipping... The pad switch helps some but not enough. Now I´m wondering if it might be the pod that´s clipping? I curently have neither another bass/guitar to try in my Pod and no other amp to test my bass in (going to the music store tomorrow), so maybe someone of you guys could be kind enough to try one of my patches to see if you got the same problem? I would be really thankfull for help! ps. I have been reading Meambobbo's guide about clipping and tried it all...

I think we're starting to go a bit of topic Here! I tried the channel volume thing with bass model but i also suspect that The distortion is coming from elsewhere. I guess goding dual amp with bass/high Gain amp still is the best solution for me.

for years I use this device, I have tried almost all possible combinations of settings, and I know what I'm talking about ..apart from the differences in perception of the tone due to different volume levels (Fletcher-Munson curves) I personally found that the channel volume does not affect in any way the distortion of the amp model, the only possible distortion caused by the channel volume, is that eventually induced in the effects placed after the amp model and/or in the equipment connected to the POD output Is this something that one should try to avoid when building a patch?

This is very interesting, Will try it out tonight! I read somewhere that The amp channel volume Didnt effect the tone in the Pod so i only used it for volume.

Hello! I have been working a lot on a bass patch for a while and I'm quite happy with my clean tone and fxs, but getting a good bass distortion is a real headache. I think I'm getting a bit closer but I'm having trouble with getting some good distortion (guitar amp sim - Fireball) that blends well with the clean bass tone (GK Cougar). What I'm trying to achieve is my current clean tone (and fx) with the ability to kick in a distortion that doesn't change the "character" of the clean tone or removes the low end. I just wan't the two to sort of "blend" together like a good bass distortion pedal. The type of tone I'm aiming for is somewhere in the ballpark of the more recent Tool or Gojira bass tones. So I'll try posting my patch here and maybe some of you more experienced guys can help me out a bit or give me some advice on how it might be improved?

Mid focus eq makes tone more bass heavy when placed after amp
Onomatopoeia replied to Onomatopoeia's topic in POD HD
Haha true and I'm a bit OCD about that stuff! Started to move things around and now I'm leaning towards a phase issue like you said. Line 6 messed up real bad with their signal path routing for dual amp stuff....- 3 replies

Hello! I have a dual amp set up clean/dirty for bass with a mid focus eq after each amp for low pass filter. For a while i thought this patch sounded awesome (atleast in my headphones) but today when trying to record something i realized that it is "missing" some top end and instead really bass heavy (not in the good way). So after some experimenting I found that this issue dissapeared when instead placing the mid focus after the mixer. Why does it do that? I would leave it after the mixer but that would defeat the whole purpose of having one after each amp... any help please?

Okej after a whole lot of tweeking I realized this approach probably is the best one for my needs (sorry for being a bit stubborn). How would you set up such a "crossover" betweend the amps? I tried with the mid focus but it only works to around 500 Hz for both high/low pass. Any suggestions?

I would happily abandon the whole two amp deal as well, but like to play with distortion and don't wan't to loose the whole low end!
-
When doing this, do you hi/low-pass the amps so that each one just covers either the lows/highs or do you just set them differently? I've been experimenting a whole lot with a mid focus as a hi/low-pass after the amps and have been getting some interesting results with a clean GK bass amp (clean low end) + Fireball (distortion high end). And yes, it's a complete nightmare having to set up two different amps together...

Yes I'm aware of that, but already stated my reasons. A little tap dancing is fun :)

Yes, I'm aware of this. There 3 reasons this is a problem for me. 1.) I use 5 and not 4 effects (not counting comp) and like to turn them, and the distortion, on/off as I go, regardless of each other. When setting it up in patch-mode, I have to order them differently while subtracting or adding the 5th one (as you said, you can only control 4 in each). This is a total mind lollipop for me and I need to be thinking about more important stuff like playing. That being said, I have been thinking about setting it up in patch mode and for example, leaving one fx like delay on with one patch, so I can go clean -> clean/delay. 2.) When switching patches there is a small but really annoying moment when the sound cuts out. 3.) When switching patches the delay doesn't trail off. And this is why I prefer my POD HD500X i 1-8 mode :)

The problem is that I like to play with different effects and beacause of that like to have acces to them all as I wish. I might set it up another way some day but now I preffer not.
