I just got around to testing HXN Version 1.7 in Logic Pro X, and the bug which prevented the user from automating Snapshots in Logic Pro X (without jumping through some workaround hoops) seems to have been fixed. At least its working here (using Logic Pro X 10.4.2). I was surprised because it wasn't mentioned in the release notes. Yay!

Try this test 1) Start with a fresh empty patch 2) In block #1 (left upper switch), add a loop block. Keep the default settings. Nothing should be plugged into the loop sen/return. 3) In block #2 (middle upper switch), add a Teemah distortion block. Keep it's default settings. Turning the loop block on should not add any noise. If turning the loop on generates a lot of white noise (unusable levels) you most likely have a faulty unit and should contact Line 6.

I only use HXN as a DAW plugin only, so can't be of much help if you're using as an on-the-fly software instrument. But I'd guess it should work, though, and it sounds like it works with Cubase per TexLefty. That said, I did manage to make it work pretty quickly using Logic Pro's mapping capability via it's Smart Controls (see screen shot). Reaper may do the same sort of thing... you basically map a plug-in-parametr to a controller. Logic uses a Learn function. Is this sort of thing any help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGDsNhodc7Q From what I can tell you're setting things up right your CC is set to 24 instead of 69 in your screen shots. Change the Value (to, say, 2 for example) to try changing Snapshots. BUT ... if you're mapping in the DAW via a Learn function, any CC and value should work ...you're just mapping that control # and value to a snapshot.
-
Works fine in Logic Pro. Read your kontrol 3 manual and figure out how to send CC69 with a value. Or get on an NI forum and ask. Use a MIDI monitor inside or outside of Reaper to see what you're sending.
-
I think the Mongoose only sends program change commands (for preset changes), but not CC commands (check the manual). You need CC commands to control block parameters within a preset.

....this is the midi host board I use. Works great. Just add power, a DIN connector and a couple of resistors: http://www.hobbytronics.co.uk/usb-host-mini or this newer version: http://www.hobbytronics.co.uk/usb-host-board-v2 be sure to order the "MIDI Device" version (boot loader). other handy stuff at hobbytronics: http://www.hobbytronics.co.uk/usb-midi-converter

Yeah, the snapshots change via automation at pre-specified locations in the DAW timeline. Did you send CC69 with a value (for snapshot number)?
-
HX Effects accepts MIDI via USB or 5-pin DIN, but it looks like a USB B port on the Logidy, though. No hosting, only a peripheral. You could use it with a cheap USB host module, but that would add $30 or so, and gets more complicated.
-
both of those look pretty good .... i hadn't seen either of them. The Logidy is quite affordable if you only need three switches.

For snapshots, check the manual out for "Automating Snapshot Changes." (You use the Automation/Controller Assign Tab.) That's the best way to do it for DAW automation (rather than the CC69 command). There is still a bug in Logic Pro that makes selecting the Snapshot parameter difficult in the automation lane. I've figured out a work around, so let me know if you are using Logic. I think it works OK in other DAWs.

The FCB is really popular and a good deal. I owned one for awhile, its easy to set up and it for sure will never break! The only negative for me was the size and weight, so I sold it (I'm my own roady). After that I used the Softstep (still have it, actually). Its not as hard to program as it looks once you get the hang of it (plenty of online help), very versatile and its amazingly portable and light. I put little round stick on "bumpers" (like for the bottom of chair legs ,etc) on the bigger square pads to make the foot contact area smaller and more like footswitches. Never had a problem with it, but eventually replaced it with the MIDI CPU because i needed something for desktop use and linear fader pots (with a cable running to a floor footswitch box). These days I use my HX Effects for MIDI footswitching and its surprisingly programmable!

Yeah, with version 1.6 they added MIDI parameter control: "Helix Native now lets you control parameters via MIDI. In the inspector, right-click (or Control-click) the desired parameter and from the pull-down menu, select Controller Assign > MIDI CC. Then click the Automation/Controller Assign tab and choose the parameter from the list. Adjust the MIDI CC#, Min, and Max Values." The ease and level of MIDI control is DAW dependent at this point. I can use MIDI pedals to control the plug-in real-time from within Logic Pro, but I normally do all the controlling via automation. Of course, HXN is not really intended to serve as a stand-alone software instrument using MIDI buttons and pedals, so that sort of use case is limited, I think. But as a DAW plug-in it should do what you want!
-
No. But HXN is designed to be a DAW plug-in, not a stand-alone software instrument. That could change, but I believe Line 6 will continue to focus on its hardware devices for live performance use, and HXN for DAW recording.

I stand corrected ... thought the Mongoose could do CCs, but no! It really surprising to me there is not a decent inexpensive programmable MIDI footswitch that will do CCs as well as PC#s. Hadn't heard of the Audiofront stuff .... it looks decent though very limited for the money. Years ago I bought a little circuit board (Highly Liquid's MIDI CPU) for $30 that you can configure with dozens of programmable switches, LEDs, encoders, and potentiometers and program to send just about any MIDI commands imaginable. I've used it for all sorts of projects. They aren’t selling them anymore, but a company called Livid sells a similar Brain Jr. Its USB powered and easy to configure. I think it accepts up to 16 buttons or switches. Only $50. Or if you want to dig deeper, there is a lot of info online for building Arduino controllers. You might be able to find Version 1 of Keith McMillen's Soft Step on flea-bay for cheap (Version 2 is more popular). Its really versatile and uses a soft pad instead of *click* footswitches. But its highly programmable and has, I think, 12 buttons.

Tech 21 Midi Mongoose. Or for cheap, build your own if you're handy and a nerd (plenty of plans online for arduino or raspberry pi circuits).

Good input. I found a gearpage thread that mentions Doyle often plays through a Vibratone amp or sometimes a Blue Hippo pedal (chorus). I couldn't find a specific Vibratone amp model in Helix, but there is a legacy effect block based on the Vibratone called "Rotary Drum" that gets me pretty darned close. This thread was also useful:
-
Increase your DAW's buffer size. Or, yes, using your Helix hardware as an external processor would work.

I always thought an organ patch was a cheap hotel where people wake up in a tub of ice and discover they had their kidneys harvested.
-
These days you never know if the effects were generated by pedals or plug-ins on studio tunes. I was thinking of cranking up a Leslie and playing with the EQ, as the tone is midrange heavy. Thanks, @codamedia.

I want a t-shirt that says Convolution is Linear

I personally haven't experienced any negative effects from having the IR at the front of a stereo chain in the HX Effects. Your IR will do more or less tone shaping depending on your the IR used, and your IR settings (mix, hi and lo cut). Most folks are likely using the HX Effects with a real amp and cabinet. In my case, I using the IR block for acoustic guitar to shape tone, then into effects, then to PA.

Not much to see, though. MarketPlace (purchase third-party presets and IRs from within the app) was added. No tuner. Not much to see. Not even an official release announcement on this forum. BUT THE SNAPSHOT AUTOMATION BUG IN LOGIC PRO X SEEMS TO WORK NOW!! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
