Cerebrus
I am awake during the middle of the night and am considering getting a POD as I need something I can play guitar through HPs with. I have several high end-ish headphone amps, a speaker amp, and some really good headphones that I hope I can use --- will that work? Does my PC need to be in the chain somewhere as well? I've heard that PODs work better if you can put them through some sort of amp and THEN into HPs which is why I ask...
silverhead
Sure that will work. Your PC does not need to be connected. I would try using the headphones connected directly to the POD first, then use the amp if you think it would help.
pianoguyy
When listening to your friends, you must first determine what they mean by "work" when they say it will work better with an amp and pc. When I gig, I take my Pod. There is no amp, headphones, or pc needed. The pc is not meant to be used when playing. It slows the Pod down. But, a pc is great for when it comes to creating/editing tone. So, in general, the unit works better with a pc. But that is its overall usage, not its playing usage. As far as headphone and amp usage--- Depending on which Pod you get, the volume control is the sole volume control. There is not a separate volume control for headphones. So, depending on your usage, plugging headphones directly into the pod could damage both your hearing and your headphones. I plug into my pod, everything is fine - but I don't blast my volume when going into the pa either, which is why I said 'depending on your usage'. **** I will say this much though; If you are buying a Pod solely for when you need headphones, you are wasting your money. There are $10 headphone units out there. You don't need one of these. These are complete rigs. Like I said at the top, the Pod is the only thing (other than guitars) that I take with me. DunedinDragon
If by amp you mean a headphone amp then the only value it might have is in attenuating the volume output of the POD. That's only relevant if you need to use the POD's volume control for the amount of signal you're sending to the PA or to line into a recording rig. In that case you could keep your headphone volume lower than the outputs of the POD for other purposes which might be need to be louder. Personally, if I'm using the headphones I'm not feeding the other outputs anywhere else, so the master volume on the POD works fine. Bear in mind however that even some of the most high end headphones are going to sound different generally than an FRFR type speaker used on a PA or powered monitor. So if you dial in your patch on the headphone you may have to adjust it for live application.
AlexKenivel
Just plug the headphones into the headphones jack. Mind the ohms law.
Cerebrus
Ok so this is a dumb question but all I need at the barest minimum is just the HD500, the guitar, headphones and some cables (i.e. no amp of any kind needed)? What kind of cables do I need to get? I won't be playing in a live environment for a long time so this is purely for practicing in my room. silverhead
Correct - no amp at all if you use headphones. All you need is a standard guitar jack cable and the headphones. You may need an adapter for the headphones to fit the 1/4" input. The required adapter is cheap and readily available at your local electronics store. Make sure you get a stereo (TRS) adapter.
