d0stenning
I've got a setlist dedicated to just CLEAN presets and they're mostly Fremen ones. I really need to simplify and reduce choices - so for those who own the Fremen collection and have experience with the Clean presets. which ones can safely "Go" ( for example do I need the Vox AC30 ones if I already have Matchless ones there ? ) and which ones are in your opinion definitely KEEPERS - and the most versatile ? And if you like - also mention which amp models work best as CLEAN and which ones really don't" Of course i'm using my ears - but i'd rather cull down to a smaller set of amps/patches and then tweak by ear a reduced collection as necessary. I also want to really learn a few amps in depth and forget about the others. TMC. Too much choice ! Choice overload ! :)
cruisinon2
Here's the thing...nobody can tell you what you do or don't "need". All you'll get is a bunch of other's opinions about what worked for them, which may or may not work for you. If you arbitrarily ditch a bunch of IR's on Bob from Toledo's say-so, you could easily end up tossing what would have otherwise been your favorite. I'd love a shortcut for sifting through all this stuff too...trouble is, there ain't none.
d0stenning
What makes it harder is owning a JTV - with so many pickup-guitar options. So Preset X might sound "muddy" or "meh" to me when say using the magnetics hum buckers - if checking all the presets one by one using them. But might sound ideal when using the Strat model - or Tele - or Special etc etc .... One reason NOT to buy a Variax ! - choice paralysis ! ( the only one :) ) - gaaaaaaah ! silverhead
I agree with cruisinon2. There's no good guide other than your own ears, and no shortcut that others can provide you with. Unless someone is using exactly the same guitar, exactly the same speakers/amp/monitors/headphones, in a similar size room with the same acoustic characteristics...... then what they are hearing with any specific preset is different from what you are hearing. And then consider the simple fact that everyone has their own subjective idea of what sounds 'good'. Their opinion on what you can safely "Go" might well cause you to throw out what could end up being your favourite preset. And their 'keepers' might sound like garbage to you. Rocco_Crocco
Spend 10 minutes.... go through each one for 30 seconds... rate each 1 to 5 stars. Go with your gut.... don't agonize. You either hate it, meh, or love it. Keep the 4 and 5 star presets and save the rest to your computer.

At some point you actually have to play the damn thing. You can spend the rest of your life tinkering endlessly with IR's, amp models, FX, etc etc...but to what end? You will eventually hit the point of diminishing returns. Nothing in this world just keeps getting "better" forever. In fact, the overwhelming likelihood is that you'll start to make your tones worse if you keep screwing with them.
soundog
I remember when I just plugged a guitar into an amp and played it. Later, I bought a Big Muff. After awhile, things started getting complicated.
