mattbarden
Finally decided to upgrade from the 500X and holy crap, I'm impressed. Once I set in on that Archetype Lead model I stopped switching hi-gain sims, that one is killer. Nicely done Line 6! I don't really understand what snapshot are though since they are new to me. How and when are you guys using them? I apologize for my stupidity in advance. Thanks!
shanecgriffo
it is like being to have up to 8 variations within a preset.. adjust any parameters of the preset and save it as a snapshot.. probably best to just have 4 showing- then you can have a preset and snapshot view at once. I have preset bank showing on the top windows and snapshots on the bottom. You can set all that in settings- display menu i think
shanecgriffo
i've never used more than 4 snapshots per preset but 8 are available- each being able to handle 64 parameter changes or something like that.. any way there are youtube videos to give you more details/ideas .. have fun :)
mattbarden
Hot damn, that opens up a lot of options. I'll have to check out some videos to see some of that in action, sounds interesting. Thanks for the input! I still can't get past how much better this sounds than the POD lol. That Archetype has just the right amount of cut I could never get out of any model on the 500X no matter how I eq'd it. I haven't even gone down the rabbit hole of IR's yet, I've just been doing the separated cabs trick with different mics so far.
shanecgriffo
you can use different mics even when you load a combo amp/cab .. just got to scroll the pages Try the depth control on that Archon amp too ;)
mattbarden
Did not know about the different mics on combo amps...The depth control I did find though, that was a key factor in my tone. Hella cool feature right there. So was the Archon part of a firmware update? I don't remember seeing it on the initial amp list before Helix released, but I'm old and my memory might be playing tricks on me. Mine came preloaded with 2.11 so it was just there already. mattbarden
Sorry for all the questions btw, none of my friends are musically inclined so the only time I get to talk gear is on forums like this.
shanecgriffo
i think it came with update 2.10.. along with the litigator amp
mattbarden
Nice, I will take all the free amp sims they want to give us. I'd personally love to see models of a Marshall JVM, an Orange Rockoverb and a Diezel VH4. Not that I need them since the Archetype is so badass, but more options are always good to have in your back pocket.
MusicLaw
The Helix has two subcategories of built-in Cab Blocks: Single and Dual. Each Cab has a preselected Mic Parameter (Knob 1) associated with the Cab. The Dual Cab Blocks have separate pages for each Cab, and a Mic Parameter for each. When you place an Amp+Cab Block in the signal path, the Cab is included as part of the Amp+Cab Block and may be changed. Aside from an Amp+Cab Block, you may also define Amp Blocks and Cab Blocks (subject to Dynamic DSP limits of up to 4, two per path). See the Helix User Guide 2.0 Rev D PDF page 26 and 28 regarding Amps and Cabs, and Page 19 regarding Amp and Cab Blocks use of Dynamic DSP.
mattbarden
I'm finding I'm kind of partial to the sound of the amp separated from the cabs. Right now I'm running a Y chain after the amp with two cabs. I'm using the same cab but with different mics, both panned center. I might start mixing and matching cabs but for now the Archetype with two Cali V30's, 57 dynamic on one path and a 7 dynamic on the other, seems to be getting me where I want to be. I just spent the last hour setting up and testing a new template in Reaper for that sweet, sweet added benefit of re-amping. I'm still mind boggled why the X3's had re-amping abilities but the HD's didn't. Re-amping was one of my sell points and it works really well, I'm excited thinking about how much time I'm going to save being able to do that again. God I missed re-amping lol! I really appreciate all the info guys. I'm only on day two with the Helix and while I'm familiar with Line 6's way of doing things, this is a different beast entirely with all the extra stuff you can do beyond the POD's. I know I'm only scratching the surface right now but man am I happy with the results so far. Any input on different tricks you guys have come across are greatly appreciated. I want to know this thing inside and out, the sooner the better so I can get on with the jamming!
shanecgriffo
i tried a stereo spread with that amp.. 2 cabs: one with a 12ms delay or similar to widen it (i used a delay pedal with 12ms full wet from memory) It sounded pretty nice
mattbarden
I haven't even tried the clean channel of it yet, is it any good? My go to cleans are typically the JC or Twin models, but this Archetype is new to me and I can't even get past the dirty channel yet cause it's so good and fun to play lol. shanecgriffo
the clean channel is great- a big clean sound.. and takes drive pedals really nicely.. even try stacking a couple

There are plenty of clean amps to choose from too. The matchless is one of my favorites.
willjrock
I like the full on distortion of the Arch clean. Master 10 Drive 10 and Bias 10. Helix has re - invigorated my appreciation for fatter half drive type tones.
