patdixon
So my LT has been working great on gigs using 4cm & a '57 hung on the amp going to FOH. Today I had my first gig at church using a preset with amp/cab sims and XLR out. The XLR (FOH) sounds amazing as I expected, but the "live" 1/4" out to a stage amp sounds shrill. I turned the treble way down & the bass up on the amp but it didn't help much. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious; any ideas on how to tame the high end going to the amp without sacrificing the XLR out tone?
cruisinon2
Well this is opposite the usual problem...it's odd that the fizzy high end is coming from your stage amp and not the FRFR PA speakers, which is the typical gripe. Regardless, you're always gonna have trouble trying to run the same patch through two very different kinds of speakers. No matter what you do with individual settings, the disparate frequency responses of a guitar amp vs. a PA speaker will always be there coloring the sound in very different ways. You could rework all your patches to have to parallel paths, one EQed for the PA and the other for your amp...but the path of least resistance will be getting some sort of FRFR speaker solution for a stage monitor. That way the tone going to FOH should be essentially the same as the what you're hearing on stage.
j_hotch
Another thought; check the output level of the 1/4 inch output. It might be too hot for the monitor amp.
MeToDuCT
For that scenario I use 2 parallel paths where path 2 input block is set as "return 1" and "send 1" block split these paths on the upper. 'Pre' effects (wah, distortion, etc.) are before "send 1", then preamp block and 'post' effects (delays, reverbs) goes to 1/4 output on the upper path (feeds the "return" input of the stage amp head / combo), and the amp block with same 'post' effects + IR block goes to XLR output on the lower. Stage volume is controlled by Volume knob, XLR volume controlled by FOH guy. Not ideal DSP usage, but works fine for me. Hope that helps, sorry for possible bad english)
DunedinDragon
I'm wondering if you're using the cab sims on both the 1/4" out to the amp and to the FOH? Also, what did you use to dial in the tone originally? Probably the quickest fix in this case would simply be to have your FOH XLR out routed back through the stage monitors. patdixon
Looks like the easiest fix is to split the signal. I assumed since the amp is just a little SS thing I'd be okay. Thanks for the help!

Being a huge Lincoln Brewster fan I kept the trend from my old X3L & started from scratch- used a Plexi amp/cab, with a little compression, delay & reverb. Some songs use chorus & tremolo but not on all the time. The house sound is amazing! The X3L had something called "Studio Match direct" & that worked but I remember having to dial back the highs on that also. This is a new animal so I just need to get my hands dirty some more. jbuhajla
What amp are you using on stage? If you need the stage amp to monitor, I would recommend going to an FRFR solution that way you are hearing on stage "exactly" what is coming out of front of house. When I transitioned to Helix at church I first went 4cm, then XLR to FOH with my amp on stage to monitor. Then I switched to FRFR (JBL EON 610) on stage to monitor. Since then we went "soundless" on stage and now just XLR to FOH and in ear monitors. I do miss sometimes feeling the amp behind me, but I do LOVE the IEMs. Even if we do switch back to amps on stage, I will still keep the IEMs for the band mix. Funny thing is I use it's bigger cousin (35W / 12" spkr) for band practice and it sounds killer! The only difference is at church I'm going XLR and 1/4" out (same path) but at band practice I'm going straight into the amp with no amp/cab modeling (at gigs I do 4cm with no amp modeling except one song). Since I'm going to split the signal I just realized I could use a different amp/cab model in that path and maybe get a tone I can live with. I know FRFR is the way to go but with no budget (they don't pay me) I'm kinda stuck right now. Thanks for the replies!
